.SYNOPSIS...
A persistent Santa Ana weather pattern will continue through next
week with clear skies, low humidity, and periods of gusty north
to northeast winds. The strongest winds will occur Sunday evening
and continue into Monday, as low pressure strengthens into
Arizona. The dry air and clear skies will result in cold nights in
the valleys, and mild days west of the mountains.

SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...

At 9 AM, mostly clear skies prevailed across Southern California.
The offshore pressure gradients have been holding steady this
morning at -5.5 mb from SAN to TPH. These pressure gradients
should relax a bit going into this afternoon, but will continue to
be weakly offshore into Sunday. It was quite a chilly night last
night, especially in the inland valleys and High Desert. The
inland valleys reached the low to mid 30s for overnight lows, and
some locations in the High Desert got down into the lower 20s.
Given the clear skies and continued weak offshore flow, tonight
will be another chilly night across the valleys and deserts.

Weak ridging is building in across SoCal as the low pressure
system pushes east into the Rockies. We will see slightly warmer
daytime highs today compared to previous days, with areas west of
the mountains reaching into the low to mid 60s. Another low
pressure system is traversing the ridge, and will drop down into
the Great Basin on Sunday. This will bring us increased onshore
flow Sunday morning and afternoon, especially on the desert
mountain slopes and into the deserts. Peak gusts could top 50 mph
in the wind prone areas of the desert mountain slopes. The
increased onshore flow will also bring slight cooling for all
areas on Sunday.

As the low pressure system moves south into Arizona late on Sunday,
a tight pressure gradient will set up across SoCal. This pressure
gradient will fuel strong north to northeasterly winds aloft.
Some of those winds aloft should mix down to the surface,
resulting in strong Santa Ana winds over and south/southwest of
the mountains. Mountain waves are likely to form as well, which
further supports strong surface winds. The ECMWF Extreme Forecast
Index indicates areas of 0.9 to 0.95 (highest is 1.0) in the
deserts bordering our area, and areas of 0.7 to 0.8 across San
Bernardino, Riverside and Orange counties. This indicates an
unusually strong wind event for this time of year.

These strong Santa Ana winds will occur even outside of the
typically windy spots, affecting portions of the Inland Empire,
inland Orange County, and even coastal Orange County. Therefore, a
High Wind Watch has been issued for the San Bernardino Mountains,
the Santa Ana Mountains, the Inland Empire and inland Orange
County Sunday evening through Monday afternoon. As long as
forecast trends continue, the High Wind Watch will be upgraded to
a High Wind Warning with the afternoon forecast package.
Additionally, Wind Advisories may be needed for the lower deserts
and southern mountains.

The winds will diminish late on Monday, but weak offshore winds
will continue into Wednesday. Days will be warm west of the
mountains due to the downsloping flow, with cooler temperatures
expected in the deserts.

Another low pressure system looks to traverse the ridge and push
into the Great Basin late Wednesday into Thursday, bringing
slightly stronger Santa Ana winds and warmer temperatures for the
end of next week. That very well may be our last shot of Santa Ana
winds for a bit, as there are indications that the persistent
ridge across the EastPac may begin to erode towards the end of
January. This will allow low pressure systems to begin pushing
back into California. Ensembles show this pattern change quite
well, with most ECMWF members bringing precipitation back by the
end of the month.

211700Z...Mostly clear with unrestricted vis and light offshore flow
through early Sunday morning.

.MARINE...
There is moderate confidence of strong northeast winds along and off
the Orange and San Diego County coasts early Monday through Monday
evening, which may impact navigation in and out of harbors. Wind
gusts may locally exceed 20 kt Monday morning into Monday afternoon,
especially along the northern portions of the coastal waters zones.
Otherwise, no marine weather hazards are expected through next
Wednesday.

.BEACHES...
Very high tides near 7 feet will occur through Monday between 7 and
10 AM each day. This could produce minor coastal flooding of
low-lying beaches. Extreme low tides around -2 feet may also impact
boats in harbor and affect navigation. Surf of 2 to 5 feet is
expected during this period. A Beach Hazard Statement is in effect
for minor coastal flooding of low-lying beaches.
