What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this wind advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS San Diego, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this wind advisory went out at Nov 17, 8:35 PM PST, 7 hours 8 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Nov 17, 8:35 PM PST, 7 hours 8 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Diego CA
835 PM PST Fri Nov 17 2023

.SYNOPSIS...
Cloudy and cool with showers this evening into Saturday. Most
areas will see light rainfall and even some lightning for portions
of Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Sunday will be
cooler but sunnier. Dry, warm and sunny skies with gusty Santa
Ana winds along and west of the mountains for Monday and Tuesday.
Onshore flow could return for late next week, leading to slightly
cooler but fair weather.

&&

.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...

This evening, showers moved into San Diego County from the
southwest shortly after 4 pm and are spreading northeast at this
hour. So far, the showers have produced accumulations from a few
hundredths of an inch to 0.55 inch in San Diego County. The
showers will spread into Riverside and San Bernardino counties
before dissipating around midnight, only to be replaced by another
band of organized showers moving in from the northwest as the
parent low off the coast of central CA moves northeast and becomes
an open wave on Saturday. Colder air, greater instability and
dynamic forcing could produce lightning in portions of Orange,
Riverside and San Bernardino counties late tonight into early
Saturday morning. The afternoon sounding showed 0.80 inch of
precipitable, almost entirely below about 8,000 ft. This profile
is likely much different since the showers moved in.

The trough will move east into the Great Basin by Sunday, taking
the clouds and showers with it. Before it's all over, this system
is expected to bring rainfall amounts ranging from a few
hundredths to 0.25 inch in the coastal areas, from about 0.20 to
0.50 inch inland with locally higher amounts on the coastal mtn
slopes, and less than 0.10 in the deserts.

Skies will clear from north to south on Sunday but winds will
strengthen from the west, gusting 40-50 mph in the favored
locations of the mtns and adjacent desert areas.

A ridge of high pressure builds off the coast and shifts inland by
next Wednesday as a surface high moves into the Great Basin,
following the low/trough as it moves to the southeast. This will
bring us warm and dry conditions with Santa Ana winds for Monday
through Tuesday. Winds will be mostly northeast late Sunday night
into Monday morning so strongest winds will be felt north of SD
County, where areas near the passes and foothills will see local
gusts near 60 MPH. Lower elevations can expect gusts 30-45 MPH.
Winds will turn more easterly and weaken as the high pressure
ridge shifts over SoCal. Foothill areas of SD County will see
wind gusts near 35-45 MPH, mainly on Tuesday. The winds weaken
for Tue and Wed but humidity remains low and temperatures well
above seasonal averages west of the mtns.

For Thanksgiving Day and toward the end of next week, the spread
in ensemble solutions leads to significant uncertainty, but
currently the most likely outcome is for a return of onshore flow
and lower temperatures, closer to seasonal averages west of the
mtns.
