.SYNOPSIS...
A strong disturbance diving southeast into the southern Rockies, is
fueling the strong northwest winds this morning over the mountains
and deserts. As it shifts farther east, those strong winds will turn
northerly and then northeasterly through Tuesday as a strong ridge
builds along the West Coast. This will result in a period of
strong Santa Ana winds across Southern California from late tonight
through Tuesday. The deep marine layer in place this morning will be
driven back out to sea by the dry winds moving off the mountains to
the coast. This sets us up for a period of fair and dry conditions
through midweek, with much warmer days west of the mountains. The
nights will be mild in areas of wind, but it will be chilly in the
wind-sheltered valleys. The ridge will weaken for Thanksgiving, as a
trough digs south across the State, returning onshore flow, more
clouds, and cooler weather over the holiday weekend.

At 8 AM PST...Radar and rain gages indicated scattered, light rain
showers moving SE across SW San Diego County, and onto the coastal
slopes. Three hour accumulations through 8 AM PST were 0.05" or
less. Satellite imagery showed the most widespread clouds over
southern San Diego County, but there were areas of clouds farther
north through orange and SW San Bernardino County as well. Our 12Z
Miramar sounding still indicated a nearly saturated layer from the
sfc, to around 5000 FT MSL, but there was no significant inversion.
We have some solid, local sfc pressure gradients from the coast to
the lower deserts, but they were about neutral to the north. Still,
NW winds/gusts were quite strong over the mtn/desert areas. Peak
wind gusts eclipsed the 70 MPH mark this morning in the wind-prone
areas of the San Gorgonio Pass and along the desert slopes of the
San Bernardino Mountains. They weren't as strong farther south. The
latest precipitation and wind reports will be headlined on our
webpage this morning.
Given the weak inversion on our sounding and satellite trends, we
should see most of the stratus deck break today, leaving fair or
partly cloudy conditions for the afternoon. Our Zone Forecasts have
already been updated to include some of the lingering, light
precipitation this morning over San Diego County, so no further
updates are planned.

A highly amplified shortwave is pushing into the Great Basin this
morning. Northwest winds are increasing across the mountains and
desert slopes, and the highest wind gust to 61 mph so far has
occurred at Whitewater (Riverside County). Winds will peak from
mid-morning through the early afternoon hours, when wind gusts of
60-65 mph will be possible.
This trough quickly exits the region later today and a rapidly
strengthening ridge develops over the northern Pacific and Pacific
Northwest in its wake. For Southern California, winds will first
turn offshore across San Bernardino County and Orange County this
evening and strengthen quickly, and expand farther south into
Riverside and San Diego Counties Monday morning. The strongest
Santa Ana winds will occur from a corridor from the coastal slopes
of the San Bernardino County Mountains through northern portions
of the Inland Empire, and the Santa Ana Mountains into inland
Orange County. Peak wind gusts up to 75 mph will be possible in
wind- prone passes and canyons, especially early Monday morning.
Winds start to turn more easterly Monday night into Tuesday,
favoring stronger winds in Riverside and San Diego Counties. High
Wind Watches have been posted for these regions from late tonight
through Tuesday.
Offshore winds and a strengthening ridge will promote warming
temperatures across the region, most notably west of the
mountains. The warmest day looks to be on Tuesday when highs will
range 6-10 degrees above seasonal averages west of the mountains,
reaching the upper-70s and low-80s. Conditions will also dry out
quickly, leading to periods of elevated fire weather conditions.
Big diurnal swings in temperatures will be common from chilly
overnight low temperatures to warm afternoons.
This pattern breaks down around Thursday when a vigorous trough
develops over the Great Basin. Winds will turn back onshore in
Southern California, and a rebuilding marine layer will spread
clouds inland, potentially even becoming deep enough to produce
patchy drizzle or light showers west of the mountains. Another
offshore event follows into next weekend, with gusty Santa Ana
conditions likely into the following week. This round isn't likely
to be as warm though as the ensemble consensus clearly has our
temperatures on a downward trajectory into the following week.

3500 ft MSL will slowly clear from north to south throughout the
day. -SHRA will begin to dwindle down later this morning near KSAN.
Coastal mountain slopes will remain obscured with cigs clearing SD
county by this afternoon. Low to moderate confidence on clearing
time today, especially VCTY KSAN which may not clear until late
afternoon. Mostly clear with unrestricted vis Sun evening into
Monday morning.
Gusty west winds will create STG up/downdrafts at times through 00Z
this afternoon along desert slopes. Winds will turn offshore after
02Z Monday, where strong north-northeast winds begin to develop with
sfc gusts 35-50kt near the foothills of the San Bernardino
Mountains, below the Cajon Pass, and in the San Ana Mountains. Winds
strengthen and peak on Monday morning. STG-SVR up/downdrafts and
areas of LLWS over and S/SW of the mountains during this time.
Deserts...West-northwest winds with sfc gusts 25-40 kt and isolated
gusts to 50 kt through 23Z Sunday, strongest across the desert
mountain slopes and below the San Gorgonio Pass. MOD-STG
up/downdrafts and LLWS likely over/east of the mountains. Winds
becoming northerly and weakening over most desert areas later this
afternoon.

Northwest winds will strengthen to 15-20 kt over the outer waters
with gusts 25-30 kt ending later this evening. A Small Craft
Advisory remains in effect until 10 PM tonight. A switch to
northeast winds will occur late tonight into Monday morning, with
gusts reaching/exceeding 20 kt from Oceanside northward. This may
make navigation in and out of Oceanside Harbor difficult for small
vessels.
