.SYNOPSIS...
A front accompanied by rain will continue to push southeast
this morning. In its wake, expect warm temperatures and partly
to mostly cloudy skies. A second, more potent system, will move
across the area Friday into Friday night. High pressure and
drier weather return for the weekend and early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 200 AM EST Thursday...

...Rain this morning, a break, followed by a repeat tonight...

The southern Appalachians are on the southern periphery of two
difference weather systems, one related to a northern stream
short wave over the Great Lakes, and the other more of a trail
of PVA leading to a closed low near Nevada. All this was helping
to support showers and thunderstorms across much of the eastern
CONUS this morning. There have been a couple areas of MUCAPE as
expected, one across the WV/VA line, and one over the NC
Piedmont, which has supported a few lightning strikes. This
activity should be waning as more stratiform rain moves in. Rain
rates have been pretty low, but expect steady rain to persist
for a few hours before rain exits to the southeast by early to
mid morning, coincident with the passage of a cool front. QPF
amounts still look to be highest across the west and southern
edges of the forecast area and to a lesser extent along the Blue
Ridge, where up to an inch may fall this morning. The remainder
of the area will see totals this AM in the 0.25-0.50 inch
range.

Clouds linger much of the day, with the front stalling to our
south and more short wave energy headed our way. WAA will help
temperatures warm into the 50s and 60s, but clouds will hold
readings down some.

PoPs gradually creep up again from the southwest late tonight
into Friday morning, with another widespread soaking rain for
the morning hours for the second day in a row. However, high
pressure will have wedged along the mountains behind the first
system, and drier air and subsidence will keep rain from
developing for most until after midnight. Expecting another
third of an inch of rain through daybreak. Lows will be in the
upper 30s to upper 40s.

Confidence in the near term forecast is moderate.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...

...Slight Risk of Severe Weather for portions of southwestern VA
and northern NC...

A deep surface low will move northeastward across
the Ohio Valley through Friday. The system's associated cold
front moves through the Central Appalachians later on Friday,
and will bring rain to the area for most of the day. Forecast
precipitable water values range from an inch to an inch and a
quarter, which indicates the potential for heavy rainfall to
occur. At this time, amounts look to be around an inch to an
inch and a half, with some locally heavier amounts in areas of
stronger showers. Given rainfall in the near term portion of the
forecast, some localized flooding may be possible. However,
this front looks to progress through the area fairly quickly,
bringing an end to the rain by mid Saturday morning, which helps
to limit any widespread flooding threat.

Strong gusty winds will accompany this system, as 850mb winds
exceed 50 to 55 knots Friday night through Saturday morning.
Forecast soundings do indicate a decent inversion across the
area, however, given the moderate rainfall, these winds will
likely mix down over the higher elevations along and west of the
Blue Ridge. That being said, a Wind Advisory will be in effect
from Friday morning to Saturday afternoon for most counties
along and west of the Blue Ridge.

With the strong wind shear associated with this system and the
modest instability, some thunderstorms are possible for areas
south of US 460. Damaging winds are the main hazard, and an
isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

Following the frontal passage, surface high pressure builds back
in over the area Saturday. The steep pressure rises as the
high comes in will also contribute to strong winds through
Saturday afternoon. After the front, the rest of the weekend
will be dry.

High temperatures will be in the 50s and 60s across the area, with
lows in the 40s and 50s.

Forecast confidence is high.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 315 AM EST Thursday...

...Several days of dry weather...

The broad surface high pressure and upper level ridging will
remain situated over the eastern US through the beginning of
the work week. This will result in mostly sunny skies and dry
weather through Tuesday. A surface low and frontal system will
develop over the central Plains and start moving eastward
through the first half of the week, reaching the Mid Atlantic
around Wednesday. However, long range models differ in the
evolution and strength of this system. For now, have not gone
higher than chance PoPs to reflect the uncertainty in how this
system will impact the area.

Temperatures will be above normal, in the mid to upper 60s, and
possibly low 70s in the Piedmont, for the first half of the
week.

Forecast confidence is average, but low regarding the mid week
system.

.AVIATION /09Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 300 AM EST Thursday...

Sites are generally ranging from MVFR to IFR this morning in
light to moderate rain accompanied by low ceilings and fog. The
rain should exit the area by 11-14Z. Any thunderstorm activity
is largely south or east of the area.

Ceilings improve to broken to overcast VFR and may even scatter
out for a time this afternoon and evening. But additional rain
is expected again during the overnight hours tonight into
Friday, again bringing variable sub-VFR conditions. THis

LLWS this morning near LWB should be mainly over as the system
continues to move through. Light and variable surface winds
will become westerly and slightly gusty this afternoon.

Extended Aviation Outlook...

Very gusty winds are expected before and after the cold frontal
passage Friday and again Saturday, with BLF, LWB, BCB, and ROA
likely seeing gusts to 30 kts or so.

The weekend through Monday look mainly dry and VFR.
