.SYNOPSIS...
A large low pressure system over the Plains will move east today and
tonight, pushing a cold front through the region on Saturday along
with showers and strong wind. Cooler weather and dry high pressure
is on tap for Sunday and Monday under high pressure. Another low
pressure system brings the next chance of precipitation by the
middle of next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 934 AM EDT Friday...
...Increased shower chances and sped up timing as well as added
isolated thunder in the WV mtns late this afternoon...
Radar composite and surface obs indicate rain showers had made
it as far east as Bristol and along the TN/NC border. The 00z
run of the HiresFV3 had this fairly close and updated the
forecast through this afternoon to blend that model in with
Consshort. With the warm front lifting north today will likely
see best shower coverage north of U.S. 460 where likely pops are
in place, with categorical pops over SE WV and 30-40 pops across
the NC piedmont into portions of southside VA east of Danville
Convection across south central KY this morning, associated with
some instability aloft will likely approach our western counties
by late afternoon, so threw in some isolated thunder there, but
nothing strong or severe.
As far as winds today, looking at low level jet from the
southwest 40-50kts but with increasing clouds wind gusts will be
south of 35 mph for most. But still expect a breezy/mild
afternoon with highs in the upper 50s to upper 60s.
Will be looking at wind headline updates (Advisory vs Warnings) for
Saturday later this morning into early afternoon.
Previous discussion from early this morning...
Water vapor satellite loop showed a short wave moving east out
of the Mid Mississippi Valley along with a cluster of showers
and a few thunderstorms. Hi-res guidance in good agreement with
the timing with the leading edge of the precipitation reaching
southern West Virginia and the southwest tip of Virginia just
after 12Z/8AM and exiting east of Danville and Lynchburg before
midnight. This puts the highest probability of precipitation
between 18Z/2PM and 00Z/8PM.
High clouds were already filling in over the mountains and moisture
will continue to increase throughout the day as precipitable water
values rise just above one inch. There will be a dry period between
the showers today and the showers that arrive along the pre-frontal
trough late tonight. Will be using the faster timing of the FV3 and
RAP guidance for the probability of precipitation after midnight.
Staying close to guidance for highs today. Warm air advection,
clouds and good mixing expecting a limited drop in temperature
overnight. Will be trending overnight lows toward the warmer
guidance.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
As of 300 AM EDT Friday...
No Changes to High Wind Watch at this time...
Gusty southwest winds will increase ahead of the front on Saturday
as a strong low level jet of 40-50kts develops. Should see some
gusts in the 30-40mph range Saturday morning, but clouds/rain may
limit stronger gusts making it to the surface. Behind the front,
winds shift to the WNW and the low level jet will continue to
strengthen. Model forecast soundings showing 50-60kts in the mixed
layer from early Saturday afternoon and continuing into the evening,
translating to some impressive gusts to the surface. Headlines have
been issued to account for this, but will hold off for another cycle
before doing any upgrades or changes to the current headlines. Will
also see some upslope precipitation for the West Virginia mountains
with rain turning to snow showers on early Sunday morning. No
accumulations expected.
Winds will quickly subside through the day on Sunday as high
pressure builds east over the area. Overall, upper pattern flattens
across the CONUS through Monday and expecting dry weather through
Monday. Next system enters along the Pacific Coast by Monday night,
amplifying the pattern again as we move into next week.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 315 AM EDT Friday...
Ridging will begin to build for the middle of next week as a strong
trough enters into the Central Plains. Warm front will be well to
the north and southwest flow will supply plenty of warmth the area.
Above normal temperatures at times as much as 15 to 20 degrees above
normal can be expected Tuesday through Thursday. Should remain
mostly dry through the period, but could have some scattered
afternoon showers by mid-week.
Surface low over the Central Plains during the middle of next week
lifts into Canada and a trailing front will approach the area,
potentially stalling nearby. Model guidance is in surprisingly good
agreement of this occurring. If that indeed is the case, will likely
have showers to contend with into the end of next week.

.AVIATION /14Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 645 AM EDT Friday...
Water vapor satellite loop showed a short wave moving east
across Kentucky along with a cluster of showers and a few
thunderstorms. Hi-res guidance in good agreement with the timing
with the leading edge of the precipitation reaching southern
West Virginia and the southwest tip of Virginia just after
12Z/8AM and exiting east of KDAN and KLYH before midnight. This
puts the highest probability of precipitation between 18Z/2PM
and 00Z/8PM. Ceilings will lower throughout the day but will
remain VFR until 00Z/8PM. Winds will gust 20 to 25 knots today
and tonight.
There will be a dry period between the showers today and the
showers that arrive along the pre-frontal trough late tonight.
These later showers with MVFR ceilings and visibilities are
expected to arrive after 06Z/2AM and continue past the end of
the TAF forecast valid period. Have included some LLWS after as
the low level jet increases into the 50 to 65kt range from the
southwest tonight.
.Extended Aviation Outlook...
Showers with the potential for MVFR visibility will cross the
Mid Atlantic region Saturday morning. Just behind the front
expect a surge in wind with gusts of 35 to 60 knots in the
mountains and foothills and up to 45 kts in the Virginia and
North Carolina piedmont.
MVFR ceilings will likely persist through Saturday along/west
of the Blue Ridge with VFR returning east by Saturday afternoon.
Mostly VFR conditions are expected Sunday through Tuesday.
