.SYNOPSIS...
A strong low pressure system brings rain and gusty winds at
times today into Monday, followed by snow showers later Monday
into Tuesday. High pressure dominates Wednesday/Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 155 PM Sunday...
Two areas of rain, one forced by a northern stream trough over the
Upper Ohio Valley and one forced by the strong surface low moving up
the Atlantic Seaboard will continue to affect the region through
this afternoon/evening. Western counties primarily affected by the
former feature will see rain ending by 7-10PM while points farther
east and southeast will see rain lingering well into the overnight,
closer to daybreak in the northeast mountains.
The aforementioned coastal low will pinch off a much weaker low
transiting south of Hudson Bay, purloining its effective cold front
in wrap-around flow advecting cold air into the region through the
day Monday. This fairly deep (to around H650) cold air coupled with
lake enhanced moisture off of the Upper Great Lakes will yield
numerous to widespread rain and show showers, some rather heavy at
times, for the lower elevations and all snow in the mountains. As
drier air progressively works into the region through the late
afternoon and evening, wet-bulbing associated with these showers
coupled with continued cold advection will yield a slow sag in
temperatures before beginning to dive with loss of daytime heating.
While some flakes may be flying below 2000 ft, impactful
accumulations during the daytime are unlikely given some surface
heating making it through the clouds and antecedent warm ground
conditions, especially with some breaks to sunshine expected between
any heavier snow squalls. Above 2000 ft outside the mountains, some
minor accumulations could yield some issues during the daytime and
especially for the evening commute more so with any heavier squalls;
in the mountains accumulating snow could start as early as late
morning. With loss of sunshine and with temperatures dipping below
freezing even in the lowlands, impacts may start to ramp up Monday
evening, especially on untreated elevated surfaces. An
additional area of impact based winter weather advisories may
be warranted for much of the lower elevations well below
criteria beginning Monday evening. The higher elevations will
see a mix of Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings
with this afternoon's package, see the short term discussion,
where a bulk of any impacts will occur for details.
It will feel rather brisk Monday with northwesterly winds gusting 20-
25 mph across the lower elevations and 35-45 mph in the mountains.
With snow beginning to fall across the highest elevations, at least
some blowing snow will be possible, especially as snow ratios
increase heading into Monday evening.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 345 AM Sunday...
A low pressure system centered just east of the CWA will continue to
track north across New England and into Canada Monday into Monday
night. Moisture and cold air will be transported into the area
behind the retreating low while an upper level trough shifts east
overhead.
Precipitation should be ongoing at the start of the short term
period, though the arrival of colder air is expected to initiate a
transition from rain to snow along the mountains early Monday.
Some flakes may even begin to mix in for the lowlands during the
day.
Temperatures continue to lower Monday night, with snow becoming
the dominant precipitation type across the CWA. Snow continues
overnight, then gradually tapers off from west to east on
Tuesday as the upper trough exits and high pressure builds in
from the southwest. Drier conditions are expected to return to
the lowlands by afternoon, while upslope flow could allow light
snow to linger over the mountains until evening.
Highest snow amounts are expected to be in the mountains at
elevations over 3000 ft. This area could receive between 6-10
inches, while 1-4 inches are possible at lower elevations along and
near the mountains. In the lowlands, accumulations are generally
expected to be around an inch or less.
With hazardous travel conditions possible due to heavy snow, a
Winter Storm Watch remains in place Monday afternoon into Tuesday
morning for the higher elevations of the northeast mountains.
Tuesday night will be cold, but drier courtesy of high pressure
beneath an upper ridge.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 1110 AM Sunday...
A high pressure system will provide dry weather with moderating
temperatures for Wednesday and Thursday.
Models then struggle with the timing of an upper level
disturbance that would bring some precipitation chances to the
area, sometime on Friday or Saturday. With the timing
uncertainty, confidence is not high, leading to chance POPs.

Precipitation associated with a northern stream trough exits the
western terminals through late this afternoon. Across the eastern
terminals, a combination of the northern stream trough and
precipitation around the periphery of a strong low moving up the
Atlantic coast linger into the evening/overnight. A period of
IFR/MVFR stratus can be expected in the wake of the precipitation
across the west through Monday.
Gusty winds and EKN and BKW abate through 22Z as downslope flow
weakens with generally light winds turning northwesterly through the
evening. Gusty northwesterly winds are then expected through much of
the day Monday.
