.SYNOPSIS...
Strong low pressure system will affect the area through tonight.
Mainly dry weather expected this weekend. Another system brings
a cold front with showers Monday night.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 400 AM Friday...

A strong low pressure passing northwest of the area today and
tonight occludes as its cold front crosses tonight. This has
implications in the severe weather potential just ahead of the
cold front, which carries northeastward into the Huntington
tri-state area this evening, before the occlusion process keeps
the warm air off the surface, mitigating the tornado and hail
threat, and then the wind threat, as the front whips
northeastward through the area tonight.

Rain quickly overspreading the area early this morning could
exceed a half inch total over the middle Ohio Valley, with
lesser amounts to the east and southeast. The column may cool
just enough for snow or sleet over the higher mountainous
terrain early this morning. With surface temperatures there
barely as low as freezing this morning, they should be above
freezing by the time the warm nose aloft is by late this
morning, minimizing any chance for freezing rain.

There is likely to be a break in the rain this afternoon,
longest southeast, and minimal if any northwest, in central
Ohio, before showers associated with the cold front arrive from
the west late this afternoon. With an additional quarter to half
inch rainfall expected there on average, locally heavier
downpours could cause high water given the longer duration
rainfall overall.

Strong winds developing today will depend upon how much mixing
we can realize beneath the inversion. Strong wind gusts are most
likely southwest, in the Huntington tri-state area late this
afternoon into this evening, where the inversion gets taken out
ahead of the cold front. Farther east, it will take the cold
front itself to take out the inversion, and a spike in wind
gusts could result on the frontal passage. Finally, strong
winds aloft ahead of the front this evening and behind the
front overnight tonight over the higher mountainous terrain
could result in gusts well over 50 mph, and have upgraded the
wind advisory to a high wind warning there for tonight into
Saturday morning.

Snow and even briefly freezing rain could mix in across higher
terrain toward dawn Saturday, as the frontal inversion undercuts
the colder air aloft.

Temperatures remain above normal, especially for highs today,
but not record-breaking, and still above normal for lows
Saturday morning even with the arrival of the cooler air behind
the system, which is of Pacific Origin.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
As of 245 AM Friday...

The forecast period opens up in the midst of the passage of an
upper level trough and accompanying surface disturbance. Post-
frontal tightened pressure gradient remains along the higher
terrain on Saturday while relaxing gradually for the lowlands.
Wind headlines from inherited forecast remains unchanged in
regards to expiration timing. With the departure of the surface
low, shower chances become depleted along the spine of the
Appalachians Saturday morning. Residual precipitation may become
influenced by sub-freezing surface temperatures on the higher
ridgetops, leading to a period of freezing rain and light snow
at the conclusion of this event. Accumulations may extend above
a few tenths of an inch for snow and a light glaze of ice before
drier weather returns Saturday afternoon.

Clouds will gradually disperse through the progression of the
weekend, becoming mostly clear areawide on Sunday. A brief
period of high pressure will yield a quiet second half to the
weekend, along with temperatures rising above normal Sunday
afternoon beneath upper level ridging.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 245 AM Friday...

Surface high pressure exits to the eastern seaboard at the
start of the work week as a northern disturbance propagates into
the area along zonal flow aloft. 00Z global model suite
suggests mostly dry conditions initially on Monday as the system
enters the Ohio Valley in addition to a continued warming
trend. Moisture transport will aide in strengthening this
disturbance, with showers delineating an accompanying surface
cold front, currently progged to cross through the forecast area
late Monday into Tuesday. Preceding above normal temperatures
will support mostly rain with this quick moving system. Breezy
winds along the mountains transpire on Tuesday within a
tightened pressure gradient regime.

Quickly on the heels of this departure, another area of low
pressure begins to form in the Mississippi Valley by midweek.
Model solutions vary for this far out in the forecast, but
overall consensus depicts this southern stream system will
loiter around the Gulf Coast before being picked up from an
upper level trough that swings through by the back half of the
work week. First look at temperature profiles depicts mostly
rain, with periods of wintry precipitation thrown into the mix
based on elevation and nocturnal temperature influences.

.AVIATION /09Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 125 AM Friday...

A strong storm system tracking northwest of the area this period
will bring MVFR to IFR in rain, along with strong and shifting
winds including the chance for strong thunderstorms.

VFR conditions overnight will lower to MVFR in rain 09Z-11Z
south and 12Z-14Z north, with IFR visibility in rain most likely
10-15Z south and 14Z-18Z north, with the warm front.

There may be a break in the rain Friday afternoon, before
showers associated with the cold front impact the area Friday
evening, when strong thunderstorms are also possible. Conditions
are likely to improve to VFR during the break across the
lowlands, but ceilings are expected to lower to IFR at BKW
Friday morning and persist through the day. The showers late
Friday will bring MVFR to brief IFR conditions, especially with
a thunderstorm.

The end of the period, 06Z Saturday, will bring mainly VFR
visibility and MVFR ceilings.

Light northeast to southeast surface flow will become southeast
and increase overnight, and become strong and gusty from the
southeast ahead of the warm front, shifting to south ahead of
the cold front late Friday, and then to southwest behind it late
Friday night. Wind gusts could reach thr 35-40 kt range Friday,
even 40-45 kts at BKW.

Light west flow aloft overnight will become south to southeast
early Friday morning, and quickly become strong and remain
strong through the day Friday, switching to southwest behind the
front Friday night, still strong. This may result in low level
wnd shear Friday morning, before strong gusts mix to the
surface.

While instability will be limited, and a significant convective
line expected to cross in the late Friday afternoon/evening.
may yield more showers than thunderstorms, they will nonetheless
be able to transport very strong winds to the surface.
