.SYNOPSIS...
Warmer and drier weather briefly returns this afternoon. The
above average temperatures will accelerate snowmelt that will
result in increased flows across area creeks, streams, and rivers.
These conditions could create minor flooding issues for a few
areas. A pattern change is in store on Monday, leading to cooler
and windier conditions along with snow showers, mainly in the
Sierra.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
A negatively tilted trough will be swinging by later today, pushing
the ridge that's been over us for the past few days out to the east.
This system will just graze by to the north over Oregon, bringing
only gusty winds to our region. Gusts will generally be 45-50 mph in
northern Washoe/Surprise Valley, 60-70 mph along Sierra ridges, and
40 mph across western NV. Temperatures will also start to slip today
as the system to the north will be dragging in cooler air into the
region.
Heading into Monday, a deeper trough right behind the first looks to
extend further south over Nevada, bringing more gusty winds and snow
showers. The line of snow is likely to move in Monday afternoon
across northeast CA and sweep southeast down into western NV Tuesday
morning. Snow showers may continue into Tuesday afternoon for higher
elevations, though any remaining showers will be light. The bulk of
the snowfall will be around the Tahoe Basin, with little to no
accumulation across western NV. Snow amounts of 7-10" along the
Sierra crest on the west side of the Tahoe Basin, 1-6" below
8000', and up to 4" above 6000' in northeast CA. Winds will once
again be strong and gusty out of the southwest on Monday with a
50+ kt 700 mb jet dipping south over the Sierra. Gusts along
Sierra ridges could reach as high as 100 mph, with Sierra valleys
and western NV gusting to 40-45 mph.
Temperatures will continue to drop Monday and bottom out on Tuesday
before slowly bouncing back up throughout the second half of the
upcoming week. Wednesday and Thursday morning's low temperatures are
also worth noting, as below freezing temperatures return once again,
even for lower valleys. In addition, you may want to turn off
irrigation and protect exposed pipes, along with any new sensitive
vegetation. Keep those Winter jackets out for just a little longer!
Looking ahead, an additional shortwave is expected to move through
Wednesday, but this time very little precip is anticipated. Current
ensembles show a low chance (around 20%) of getting 1" of snow along
the Sierra and NE CA. However, there may be light at the end of the
tunnel this week. Ensemble clusters are in indicating a ridge
building back in, just in time for next weekend.

Cold front approaching the region will bring increasing winds today
into Monday along with a period of snow in the Sierra. FL100 winds
around 40 kts today will increase to 50+ kts Monday afternoon and
Evening. Surface winds today will gust up to 30 kts at local
terminals increasing to 35 kts on Monday. Expect turbulence and
LLWS in the lee of the Sierra through Monday.
A band of snow is expected to move into the Sierra along the cold
front on Monday evening with decreasing CIG/VIS in the Sierra and
very light showers in western Nevada. 1-2" of accumulating snow
is possible Monday night for KTRK/KTVL. -Zach

.HYDROLOGY...
* Warmer weather today will continue to increase snowmelt and
streamflows. The highest flows are likely to be this morning
through Monday morning, following a diurnal melt cycle.
Locations further downstream along mainstem rivers may peak
overnight, depending on how long it takes the water to flow
downstream.
* This weekend our biggest concerns are creeks and streams draining
snow covered terrain below about 7000 feet, but we can not rule
out some minor mainstem flooding on the Susan River, Forks of the
Carson, or the East Walker River Below Bridgeport. Creeks that
brought impacts this past week are likely to cause impacts again,
and potentially reach higher levels, especially by late Sunday.
High flows are expected on rivers and streams throughout the
region.
* Cooler conditions next week will slow snowmelt, but we may be
adding some precip to the lower level pack, which may keep flows
high. In addition, 5-10" of snow are expected in the upper
elevations in the northern Sierra, not what we really need at
