.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Key messages:

1) Early morning freezing drizzle and fog, and low stratus expected
to steadily diminish/erode from west to east early this morning.

2) Critical fire weather conditions today along the I-25 corridor
and Fremont county.

The freezing drizzle and fog which had developed overnight across
parts of El Paso, Pueblo, Otero, and Crowley counties has shown a
diminishing trend this past hour. The more favorable south/southeast
low level wind has trended more westerly, with this downslope wind
assisting with an easterly push of much drier air. The potential for
any additional freezing drizzle or fog looks to be low, given the
increasing westerly flow associated with a passing mid level trough.
The low stratus which has been in place for the last couple of days
will finally erode from west to east early this morning, bringing
sunny to partly cloudy skies to much of southern Colorado.

Locations lee of the mountains will warm in this setup today, with
upper 50s to around 60 likely in most spots. This warmth with the
arrival of much drier air will return critical fire weather
conditions to the I-25 corridor and Fremont county. Anticipate
lowest humidity values around 10 percent today, but would not be
surprised to see more single digit values. Increasing winds and
gusts still expected through mid to late morning. Still anticipated
stronger winds/gusts over and near the mountains this morning
especially just lee of the southeast mountains, though a diminishing
trend is expected through the afternoon hours.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

Key messages:

1) Prolonged moderate to heavy snow event for the Continental
Divide Region Friday afternoon into Saturday Night.

.Friday...First shortwave moves into the region during the
afternoon. Main effect on the weather will be for snow to begin
over the Continental Divide region. In collaboration with GJT and
BOU, decided to issue a winter storm watch for much of the
Continental Divide region. Precipitation chances will decrease
towards the east with the eastern mountains and plains remaining
dry. Westerly winds will increase over the eastern mountains and
Interstate 25 corridor. Will have to watch for some fire weather
concerns. However, the humidities may stay above critical values
given the more moist air aloft. It will be a mild day over the
eastern mountains and plains with highs reaching 70 over portions
of the plains.

.Saturday and Sunday...Stronger shortwave moves across the
northern Rockies on Saturday continuing the snowfall over the
Continental Divide region. The snowfall is not exceptionally
heavy, however, the duration of the event is long enough to
approach of exceed warning criteria. The flow remains westerly
with is not particularly favorable for the eastern San Juans.
However, amounts still approach or exceed warning criteria, and
there is the potential for the watch to be only upgraded to an
advisory for the eastern San Juans. Further east, it could be
windy during the morning over the eastern mountains and portions
of the Interstate 25 corridor; however, with the moist air aloft
humidities do not decrease to critical fire weather values. By
the afternoon, a cold front will pass over the plains and eastern
mountains turing the winds more easterly and weakening. There is
the chance for some precipitation over the eastern mountains and
plains with the return of some low level moisture in the upslope
flow. Currently, QPF is rather light and the airmass will not be
particular cold, so impacts from any snow should be in the
mountains.

.Sunday...A weak disturbance will pass over the region during the
afternoon and into the evening. The disturbance will bring some
light snow to the Continental divide region. With the increase in
low level moisture due to the upslope flow, some light
precipitation could develop over the eastern mountains and plains.
WPC QPF has roughly 0.1 to 0.2 inches of liquid over the eastern
mountains and portions of the plains. Snow level is forecast to be
around 7000 feet so any light accumulations will be in the
eastern mountains.

.Monday through Wednesday...There will be another chance for some
light precipitation on Monday, mainly over the eastern mountains
with the usplope flow continuing. A trough digs into the West
Coast on Tuesday and Wednesday. Main effect on the weather will be
to advect some moisture into the region from the southwest,
increasing the chances for some light precipitation, mainly over
the Continental Divide region. Airmass will be mild with above
average temperatures over much of the region. --PGW--

Occasionally gusty northwest winds up to 25-30 kts are expected
along the I-25 Corridor this afternoon, which will battle an
easterly push at the surface across the remainder of the eastern
plains. KCOS will be tricky, as gusty northwest winds are meeting
the lighter easterly winds and will create rapidly changing
surface winds.

Cloud cover has dissipated, so VFR conditions are anticipated
across the forecast area over the next 24 hrs, including the three
main TAF sites of KCOS, KPUB and KALS.

An approaching system will bring snow back to the higher terrain
of the Continental Divide starting 15z-18z Friday.
