Moore UPDATE Issued at 444 PM MST Mon Feb 27 2023 Quick update to the forecast grids for expiration of the Red Flag for today at 5 PM. Humidity levels are expected to gradually climb over the next hour or so, so critical fire weather conditions will ease. Red Flag for all of the eastern plains for tomorrow still looks good, and only question now is whether a high wind highlight will be needed for portions of the plains for tomorrow. Will wait and see what the latest guidance provides. Moore && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Tuesday) Issued at 240 PM MST Mon Feb 27 2023 Key messages: 1) Red Flag Warning has been issued for all of the plains (Including El Paso county) tomorrow. 2) Periods of snow along the CONTDVD next 24 hours. 3) Mild and windy tomorrow. Currently... Breezy and mild conditions were occurring across the region with red flag conditions (winds G25 mph and RH < 15%) across several areas of the plains. Skies were clear nearly all areas. Any snow over the lower elevations is now completely gone per sat pix imgy. Rest of today and tonight. Red flag conditions will continue over parts of the plains the rest of this afternoon. Winds will gradually decrease but will not completely decrease across the region tonight The best chance for winds keeping up tonight will be over the southern sections of the fcst area, especially the gap areas in and around the greater Walsenburg area. Temps tonight will respond to these winds and expect a rather relative mild night, with lows in the 20s and 30s plains and 10s in the larger valleys. Although skies are clear now, expect to see increasing clouds along the Divide tonight, with snow chances ramping up during the early morning hours. Snow accums should be light. Tomorrow... LOTS OF WIDESPREAD WIND is expected! Widespread 20 to 40 mph winds with gusts to 50s are likely across the entire region. I would not be too surprised if we see one or two gusts reaching high wind criteria, but I held off on any hi wind hilites for now. The main concern for tomorrow is fire weather, and have issued RED FLAG warnings for all of the plains. I have included El Paso county as fuels just became favorable for this county today per the fuels chart. Temps tomorrow will be mild, albeit it may be 2-3F cooler than todays max temps. Max temps will be in the 40s along the mtns/plains interface and El Paso county, and around 60 over the far eastern plains. As for the mtns, the snow will be a bit more substantial, especially tomorrow morning. Accums of 3 to 6 inches are likely along the Divide, with the heaviest amounts across the San Juans. .LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Monday) Issued at 240 PM MST Mon Feb 27 2023 Models in decent agreement with the upper level pattern through the extended period, with differences showing up in storm track, which will play a role in how much snow may be possibe mid week. Ensembles tend to support the ECMWF and Canadian solutions, and the NAM seems out to lunch with a northerly storm track. Tuesday night and Wednesday...an upper storm system will be taking shape along the West Coast Tuesday night into Wednesday. Strong westerly flow should dissipate Tuesday evening as an upper jet streak lift northeast away from the area. Any blowing dust potential across the Plains will diminish as winds come down. Snow will remain confined to the Continental Divide Tuesday night with minor snow amounts possible. Dry conditions are expected on the Plains. The upper low will move into the southern Great Basin on Wednesday. Increased moist southwesterly flow will bring increased snow intensity to the Continental Divide late Tuesday night and through the day Wednesday. Favorable orographics will put the heaviest snow into the San Juan Range. Snow could be very heavy Wednesday afternoon and evening, and a winter storm watch has been issued. Across the Plains, breezy conditions are expected as southwesterly flow spreads across the region ahead of the upper system. Humidity values look to remain at and above 20 percent, so fire weather conditions do not look to be a concern. Temperatures will reach into the 40s and 50s across the Plains. Wednesday night through Thursday...as mentioned above, there are model differences in where the upper system is going to track across the Desert Southwest. The outlier NAM, develops a close low over southern Colorado and lifts it off to the east. The GFS is across central New Mexico into the central Texas Panhandle. The ECMWF and Canadian, and most ensembles, are south across southern New Mexico into southern Texas. Given the better agreement with the further south solutions, followed that blend. A surface low is forecast to develop near Trinidad and drop southeast overnight into Thursday afternoon. Easterly upslope flow will lead to snow across the Plains, with areas over the southern I-25 corridor, east along the New Mexico border favored. At this time, widespread 1 to 3 inches of snow are likely. This looks to be a pretty quick hit of snow, confined to the early morning to mid morning time frame. This is when winds will be most favorable. As we progress through the morning into the afternoon, flow will turn more northerly, downsloping off the Palmer Divide and ending snow across the Plains. Areas north of Highway 50 will see snow, but accumulations should remain less than an inch. This forecast follows the more southern storm track. If solutions trend back north, similar to the GFS, snow amounts may be higher, and shifted further north. We will continue to monitor this storm system for track updates. Friday into Saturday...the upper low will open into a trough across the Missouri Valley by Friday morning, with northwesterly flow filling in behind the departing system. Light snow showers will continue over the Central Mountains. An embedded shortwave trough in the northwesterly flow will track southeast across Colorado Friday night into Saturday morning. This disturbance could bring another quick shot of snow from the Palmer Divide, southeast across the Plains. Sunday into Monday...zonal westerly flow will prevail for late in the weekend into early next week. Warmer temperatures are expected on the Plains. Increased winds may lead to enhanced fire weather concerns. Light snow will likely continue along the Continental Divide. Mozley && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Tuesday night) Issued at 1021 PM MST Mon Feb 27 2023 While VFR conditions can be expected at the TAF sites over the next 24 hours, the challenge will be with the timing and magnitude of gusty winds, and the potential for reduced visibility in blowing dust Tuesday afternoon. There is a small window for low level wind shear at KCOS between 09z and 11z overnight, though think winds will mix down quickly enough to reduce this risk sufficiently to not include in the TAF at this point. Winds at all three terminals will increase out of the southwest Monday morning with gusts to around 40-45 kts by 18z. Reduced visibility in BLDU will be possible at KALS and KPUB though visibility is likely to remain in the VFR category. An additional 1 to 2 inches of snow will be possible across the eastern Sawatch and western Mosquito range with a dusting to up to an inch of snow possible across the crest of the Sangre De Cristo range. Winds will increase across the mountains overnight with west to southwest winds gusting up to 60 mph across the higher peaks and passes by morning. This will cause areas of blowing and drifting snow across the higher elevations. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday High fire danger will continue along the I-25 corridor and across the southeast plains Tuesday, as strong west winds and low humidity values spread over the area. Winds Tuesday afternoon could gust between 50 and 60 mph, with blowing dust possible on the plains, especially along and south of Highway 50. Occasional snow will continue along the Continental Divide Monday and Tuesday, with light accumulations expected. A strong weather system will then move through the southern Rockies Wednesday and Thursday, bringing the potential for heavy snow to the mountains and light to moderate snowfall to the plains and I-25 corridor. After a brief break early Friday, another fast moving weather system may bring scattered snow showers to the eastern mountains and plains from late Friday into early Saturday morning. .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...
