.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Tuesday)

Key Messages:

1) A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for our San Juans and
our southern Sangres until 1am tomorrow morning, where an additional
5 to 10 inches of snow is possible through the rest of tonight.

2) Rain and snow are possible this evening for Teller and El Paso
county, with rain and snow chances possible for our far eastern
plains tomorrow morning as well.

3) A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for the high country
tomorrow, beginning at 11am.

Currently..

Two separate low pressure systems are set to move across the area
over the next several days. The first system is currently centered
over the desert southwest, and is bringing moist southwesterly flow
to our region. Associated snow showers continue over the high
country, and cloud cover is increasing across portions of our
plains. A light band of rain can be seen on radar stretching across
the lower Arkansas River Valley as of 2pm, but with dewpoint
depressions still in excess of 20F to 30F degrees, most of that
precip is likely evaporating before it reaches the ground. Southerly
and southwesterly winds are increasing for most locations, as the
system moves towards our southern border. Highs have climbed into
the 50s and low 60s for most of our plains, especially in cloud free
areas.

Rest of Tonight..

High resolution model guidance continues to track this first system
towards the Texas and Oklahoma panhandle region by early tomorrow
morning. There is also increasing agreement with the development of
a TROWAL on the backside of this system, as it deepens and pushes
into western Kansas. This will likely mean a few hours of rain
and snow for our far eastern plains, with a transition occuring in
the early morning hours of tomorrow. This will likely mean some
brief travel impacts for portions of Baca, Prowers, Bent and Kiowa
counties tomorrow morning, with light accumulations of snow and
slush possible on roadways early tomorrow morning.

Wind gusts increase overnight in the high country, where blowing and
drifting snow could impact travel through the night, even as new
snow tapers off into tomorrow morning.

Tomorrow..

The first system continues to push east across Kansas tomorrow,
bringing rain and snow chances to an end on our far eastern plains
by around noon at the latest. We'll likely see several hours of
clearing tomorrow morning and into tomorrow afternoon, when highs
could reach into the 50s yet again on our plains, and into the
40s for our mountain valleys. The second, and likely more
impactful, system approaches from our northwest tomorrow, pushing
into the Great Basin by tomorrow afternoon. This will keep
northwesterly and westerly winds gusty through the day, even
across our plains. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect beginning
tomorrow at 11am for the high country, where snowfall rates will
begin to increase again through tomorrow afternoon, especially for
our San Juans. Rain and snow chances begin to increase for the
I-25 corridor tomorrow afternoon as well, especially across the
Palmer Divide.

...Potent winter storm to impact southern CO Tuesday Night through
Wednesday Evening...

.Key Messages...

1.  High impact storm expected Tue Night - Wed Evening across the
majority of south central and southeast CO

2.  Snow and blowing snow will cause significant impacts to travel
across much of the area with greatest impacts south of the Arkansas
River

Next upper low will be dropping southward through UT Tuesday night
spreading increasing difluence and synoptic scale lift across CO
through Wednesday. Southwest flow ahead of the upper low will
initially favor the southwest mountains for the heaviest snow
Tuesday night, as lift is amplified by favorable orographic flow.
With strong surface cyclogenesis taking place to the south and west
ahead of the approaching low, the cold front will surge southward
across the plains Tuesday evening with east to northeast upslope
flow deepening into the southeast mountains and plains overnight.
This will cause snow to rapidly develop and expand behind the front
across the southeast mountains and I-25 corridor, with models
hitting some high qpf now up the Arkansas River into Fremont and
southern Chaffee counties Tues night. As the upper low traverses
southern CO/northern NM on Wednesday, deformation band snow will
expand across the southeast plains as the strongest isentropic
upglide focuses heaviest snow along and south of the Arkansas
River. Northerly winds will gust to around 35 to 40 mph on
Wednesday with some localized gusts to near 50 mph possible at
times, especially across eastern El Paso County. We could see some
high impact restrictions to visibility in blowing and drifting
snow and white out conditions across the plains on Wednesday,
though were winds are strongest, predicted snowfall amounts are
lower (El Paso county) and where snow is heaviest, wind gusts are
a hovering right near the threshold between winter storm and
blizzard criteria. Right now, it is still a tough call and will
hold tight with Winter Storm Watches until we see some high
resolution runs start to capture the wind part of the event a bit
better. Either way, think that there will be a window for white
out conditions in heavy snow and blowing snow Wednesday morning
across the plains with road closures possible if not likely at
times south of the Arkansas River.

As for snowfall totals, northern areas will see lighter amounts but
factoring in the winds and the likelihood of a flash freeze as
temperatures drop rapidly with the onset of snow Tuesday evening,
the impacts could lean towards warning level impacts. Teller
county may be more in the advisory range for snowfall totals with
amounts in the 5 to 10 inch range. Best estimate for northern El
paso would be 6 to 8 inches with lower amounts in the 4-6 inch
range for southern El Paso and northern Pueblo counties. The big
winners will be the eastern San Juan mountains where totals could
approach 3 feet with the combination of storms, and 8 to 18
inches across the eastern slopes of the Wets and Sangre De Cristo
mountains. Six to 12 inches look doable along and south of the
Arkansas River across the plains. Again, this storm is still
taking shape across the Pacific NW and some further changes in
snowfall predictions are still possible. Please continue to
monitor the forecasts closely.

Snow and winds decrease Wednesday evening with a cold night in store
Wednesday night given clearing skies and fresh snow cover,
especially out west. We could see wind chills close to advisory
levels across the lower elevations. Thursday will remain below
freezing for most areas given the likelihood of a widespread
fresh snow cover and this will set the stage for another cold
night Thursday night, especially across the high valleys where
readings could drop in the -10 to -20 degree range for the San
Luis, and upper Rio Grande.

We dry out and warm up with another round of showers coming in
late weekend for the mountains. -KT

Increasing snow chances are expected across the higher terrain today
into tonight, with the highest snowfall amounts of 4 to 12 inches
are still expected over the eastern San Juan and southern Sangre de
Cristo Mountains. Light to moderate snow showers are possible this
afternoon into the evening across the mountain valleys, potentially
briefly spilling into parts of the I-25 corridor. Little to no

Wednesday. Snow will be heaviest across the San Juan Range where 1
to 2 feet is possible. Near a foot of snow is possible over the
rest of the Mountains through Wednesday.

Snow, heavy at times, is expected across the Plains late Tuesday
night through Wednesday morning. The heaviest snow is expected
south of Highway 50, to the New Mexico border. This area will
likely see 6 to 10 inches, with locally higher amounts possible
over the southern Interstate 25 corridor. Areas along and north of
Highway 50 will likely see 3 to 6 inches of snow. Wind will also
be gusty across the Plains Wednesday afternoon through Thursday
morning. Northerly wind gusts in excess of 40 mph will likely
produce areas of blowing snow across the Plains and dangerous wind
chill readings. The Wednesday morning commute will likely be very
hazardous due to heavy snow and plan for these conditions.

A few snow showers are possible over the weekend into early next
week over the Mountains.
