Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pueblo CO 1053 AM MST Thu Jan 19 2023 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 356 AM MST Thu Jan 19 2023 Key messages: 1) Tranquil weather next 24 hours, but two impactful storms will affect the region beyond this short term forecast period. Currently... The winter storm which impacted parts of the region was spinning over eastern KS this morning. Another Pacific system, which promises to bring high-impactful weather to the region beyond this short term period, was located over the Pacific northwest region. Over the immediate area, skies were clear at 3 AM. Temperatures were generally in the teens along the I-25 corridor and in the 20s over the far eastern plains. In the mtns and valleys temps were generally in the 10s to negative 10s. Today and Tonight... Dry weather is anticipated during the next 24 hours. for today, skies will be mostly clear although we will see high clouds begin to move into the mtns later this afternoon, increasing into the nighttime periods across the whole region. Temps today will be seasonable with mainly 40s over the plains, with the warmest temps down along the NM border (upper 40s) to U30s to around 40s in El Paso county. Snow covered areas of far N El Paso county may struggle to get out of the low 30s. in the high country, expect max temps in the L30s in the valleys with 10s and 20s in the mtns. For tonight, system to our west will be closing off over the greater Las Vegas region. main impacts for our area will be the increasing clouds as discussed above. Min temps will be in the teens plains with a few 20s in the banana belt regions, and single digits in the mtns. Winds today will be diurnally driven. For tonight, surface winds will be light easterly in response to lowering sfc pressure associated with the incoming system to our west. .LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday) Issued at 356 AM MST Thu Jan 19 2023 Pretty good agreement between the models for the Friday and Saturday time period, with minor differences in track and strength, which will play a role in what areas see snow and how much. The secondary system forecast to impact the area for late in the weekend to early next week has come in with bigger differences the previous model runs. Details are following... Friday into Saturday...all model guidance develops a strengthening low pressure over northern Arizona on Friday, and ejecting it across northern New Mexico into either southeast Colorado or southwest Kansas by Saturday. Snow will move into the Continental Divide Friday morning and will continue through Saturday. For the most part, snow amounts along the Continental Divide look to in the 1 to 4 inch range, with the highest totals over the San Juan Range. Further east across the Eastern Mountains and into the Plains look to see the brunt of this storm system. For areas over the southern Sangre de Cristo and Raton Mesa, much will depend on how quickly this system wraps up. The quicker, the more snow will fall further west due to upslope flow and dynamics with the ejecting storm. This area will start to see snow Friday afternoon as the low moves across northern New Mexico. This is supported by the NAM solutions. However, the GFS and ECMWF are a bit slower to wrap up the system, with lesser amounts over this area. This may limit snow amounts. For now, 5 to 10 inches are possible, but amounts are subject to change. For the Plains, there is a bit better agreement between the models. The mid level low is forecast to develop over far southeast Colorado Friday night into Saturday morning. Flow around the developing low to mid level circulation along with isentropic upglide, and high omega values along the mid level front should lead to widespread heavy snowfall, especially in a southwest to northeast line from Las Animas County through Kiowa County. In this area of enhanced lift, 5 to 10 inches of snow are possible. There is a bit of uncertainty across Pueblo and El Paso Counties. El Paso County will likely see lower snow amounts of less than 3 inches. Pueblo is the wildcard, and depends on where the band sets up, and how much upslope flow occurs. For now, have 3 to 6 inches across Pueblo County, but this may be overdone, with lower amounts similar to El Paso County possible. Winds will likely produce areas of blowing snow across the Plains Friday night into Saturday morning. Gusts near 40 mph are likely. Snow should clear west to east Saturday afternoon and evening as the upper low continues to track east into the Central Plains. Dry conditions are expected Saturday night. Sunday and Monday...the next upper storm system is forecast to move across Colorado Sunday afternoon through Monday. The GFS has been pretty consistent, with the track out of the Northern Rockies, south across Colorado and into Texas. The latest ECMWF has dramatically shifted the track much further west and south. For now, continued with the consistent GFS. This is a much colder storm system, and a period of enhanced snowfall is likely Sunday night into Monday morning over the Eastern Mountains, east into the I-25 corridor. Preliminary snow amounts of 4 to 8 inches may be possible. Lesser amounts further east are expected. Highest snowfall amounts along the Continental Divide are expected over the Central Mountains given the orographically favored northwesterly flow. This storm will need to be watched. Tuesday through Thursday...several upper disturbances embedded in northwesterly flow are expected to impact southern Colorado during this period. Areas over the Central Mountains will likely see continuous light snow. Periods of snow may also be possible on the Plains with the passing waves. Temperatures will remain cool during this period. Guidance has mainly 30s for highs, but it may be colder given the northwesterly flow and cold air over the Central Plains.
