Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pueblo CO 342 AM MST Mon Jan 16 2023 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 337 AM MST Mon Jan 16 2023 Key Messages: 1) Slight lull in active weather today, with warm temps over the plains. 2) Snow picks up again in earnest over the mountains tonight, especially the San Juans. As one low pressure system departs to our northeast and another begins moving in from the west, strong zonal flow aloft will dominate our sensible weather today and tonight. With the unsettled pattern and strong zonal flow, there is plenty of moisture around, especially over the higher terrain. The plains, however, should remain dry today. High temperatures will be in the high-40s to mid- 50s over the plains and in the 30s over the higher valleys. Winds will be a bit less than yesterday, but some gusty gap flow is still expected over southern I-25. At this time, no fire weather conditions are expected. With the enhanced orographics still in place over our mountains, snowfall will pick up in earnest again later today into evening and continue into the long-term forecast period. Snowfall will be heaviest over the San Juan Mountains and adjacent areas, while lesser but still impactful amounts are expected over the Central Mountains and the Sangre de Cristos, mostly confined to the higher elevations. Low temperatures overnight will be on the cool side again, with teens-20s over most of the area. Places with snow on the ground will likely be a few degrees colder. .LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday) Issued at 337 AM MST Mon Jan 16 2023 .Key Messages... 1) Weather looking less active as models trending farther north with Wednesdays system, and Fridays system trending too far west. 2) Mountains (especially San Juans) and Palmer Divide will still have the potential for impactful weather. 3) Definitely trending colder region-wide. Guidance early this AM has started the trend of less active weather for the region this upcoming week. Wednesdays wx system is trending a bit farther north in the ensemble and deterministic runs, and Fridays system is trending farther west, decreasing the potential for significant snow for the southern I-25 corridor region. It still appears the San Juans will do well with both systems, so some of the mtns will get beneficial precip, but the plains will likely not be as wet as earlier thought. With that said, we will likely have some potentially high impact weather for N El Paso county from late Tuesday into Wednesday as the system over eastern CO wraps up and snow and wind affect the Palmer Divide region. At this time it appears Wed mornings commute over the Divide is going to be tough given the snow and wind. With Fridays system trending farther west, the potential for signif snow over the Raton Mesa region is decreasing, however the San Juans and S Sangres (and possibly the SLV) still look like they could do well with some accumulating snow. Still plenty of time to see how this system will track across the southwest US, and affect our region. Temps overall will be trending downward through the long term period and this is clearly seen in the NBM1 viewer for all locations across the fcst area. Another system is fcst to affect the area Monday bringing more cold air to the region with the chance of wintry precip. Time will tell how this is all going to pan out, but at this time it appears the biggest impacts this week will be the Palmer Divide region and the San Juans. Storm total accumulations are expected to reach over 2 feet for the San Juans and 6 to 10 inches over the Central Mountains and Sangre de Cristo Mountains. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday Two Pacific weather systems are expected to impact the region during this period. The first system will move across the area during the Tuesday and Wednesday time period. Snow, likely heavy, will affect the mountains Tuesday, and then move across the plains Wednesday. Accumulating snow will be possible over the plains on Wednesday. Areas of blowing snow could occur over the parts of the plains Wednesday. On Friday, another system will affect the region. This system is expected to be colder, and the potential for snow with this system is higher. The best chance of snow will be across the I-25 corridor, especially from Pueblo south to the New Mexico border. .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...
