Detailed discussion: Tonight... High pressure conditions will allow for mostly clear skies to be prevalent across the region. There will be some areas of low clouds and possibly freezing fog developing in the San Luis Valley by later tonight and lasting through the morning hours tomorrow. This could cause some rime icing on surfaces with slick road conditions where the freezing fog occurs. These low clouds will also keep temperatures slightly modified and relatively warmer for this time of year within the SLV. Otherwise, mostly clear skies will allow for efficient radiation cooling, and therefore temperatures should be slightly colder than previous nights for most locations. Temperatures will get down into the low 20s to around 30 for the plains, and generally in the teens for high country, with a few 20s within the mid and upper Arkansas River Valley. Tomorrow... Troughing upstream is going to continue to slowly advance towards the region. High pressure conditions will still be in control, and highs will remain above average for most locations, especially over the plains. Mid and high level clouds will be increasing throughout the afternoon. High temperatures will top off in the upper 50s to low 60s across the plains, to the 40s in the upper Arkansas River Valley. It will be relatively colder in the San Luis Valley due to the low clouds sticking around until midday, and struggling to get to 40 degrees for most locations. Friday-night-Christmas Day...Latest model data is in good agreement of the incoming eastern Pacific trough across the Pacific Northwest Coast, kicking the southern California upper low into the Desert SW Friday night, which leads to increasing moisture within increasing southwest flow across the Rockies. Operational models and ensemble data remain in good agreement into the day Saturday, with the Desert SW low weakening into an open wave lifting out across southwest Colorado, as the northern stream trough continues to dig across the Intermountain West. Models and ensemble data then continue to differ on timing and location developing closed low across the Central Rockies, with the EC and Canadian operational models further south and west than their ensemble means, which have a closed low across east central Colorado, where as the GFS suite remains the furtherest north and east with the developing low across northeastern Colorado. With said agreement of snow, moderate to heavy at times, developing across the southwest mountains Friday night, along with snow expected to continue through at least the day Saturday before diminishing Saturday night, depending on the timing of the southwest flow aloft becoming more northwest, we have issued a Winter Storm Watch for the eastern San Juan Mtns from 00Z Sat-12Z Sun, with snowfall amounts ranging from 10 to 20 inches. We have also issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Sangre de Cristo Mtns from 06Z Sat-00Z Mon, with initial snowfall across the western peaks late Friday night and Saturday, along with a secondary round across the eastern peaks Saturday night and Sunday, depending on the location of the developing low and north to northeast upslope flow. While confidence is high with precipitation spreading east across the high mountain valleys through the eastern mtns and plains through the day Saturday, confidence in precipitation type and amounts remain uncertain due to initial warm temperatures and waa with the weakening upper trough. Confidence in timing and location of the developing secondary system and caa again lead to uncertainty in snowfall amounts across the area Saturday night through Sunday (Christmas Eve), with the latest NBM data supporting the snow spreading across the high mountain valleys and across the eastern Plains Saturday night and Sunday, with the focus of snowfall shifting to the Pikes Peak/Palmer Dvd region, the Southeast Mtns and Raton Mesa, with gusty northerly winds of 20 to 40 mph on Sunday limiting snowfall across southern El Paso County and the lower Arkansas River Valley. Current model data would support possible low end advisory amounts across rest the higher terrain, though uncertainty in the location of the developing system and its impacts on snowfall amounts across the southeast mts and plains remain high. Temperatures on Christmas Day look to be at to slightly below seasonal levels, with breezy northerly winds across the far southeast Plains. For Tuesday into the middle of next week, a drying and slow warming trend to above seasonal levels remains in the offing, as model data indicates upper level ridging once again building back across the Rockies. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Friday night) Issued at 1025 PM MST Thu Dec 21 2023 KCOS and KPUB: VFR conditions are expected over the next 24 hours.
