Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pueblo CO 1024 AM MST Tue Dec 12 2023 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 412 AM MST Tue Dec 12 2023 Key Messages: - Increasing chances (20-40%) for light snow showers across the higher terrain late tonight. Relatively quiet early this morning across the region, with a trend back towards southwesterly flow aloft in place. As this has been occurring, overall column has been drying with the latest RAP analysis showing moisture shifting to the north. This will help to limit any snow development over the higher terrain, especially during the day today. Will see a fair amount of mid/high clouds remain in place today and help support more below normal temperatures. Did keep slight chance to low chance pops in place over the higher terrain later tonight into early Wednesday morning, when guidance is showing returning moisture across the region. This still looks to be rather limited though, with limited snow production/accumulation appearing likely. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday) Issued at 412 AM MST Tue Dec 12 2023 Key messages: - Widespread snow showers Wednesday through Thursday, mainly over southern mountains and plains, with potentially a significant amount of precipitation for the southeastern plains. - Temperatures will be below the seasonal average through Saturday, with a rebound thereafter through early next week. Detailed discussion: Wednesday through Thursday... A large building ridge over Canada is going to force a longwave trough over the northwestern states to become cut-off by early Wednesday as it continues to dive southward over the Great Basin Region. Deterministic models are relatively close in agreement, although with it being a cut-off low, a slight variation in the overall longwave pattern could result in a shift in the track and produce a different outcome with respect to QPF amounts as it continues to slowly advance towards the area. At around midnight on early Wednesday morning, the GFS has the U/L low closed off at the 500 mb level a little further north than the ECMWF and Canadian models. The NAM12 is closer aligned with where the GFS has the low positioned. The GFS does appear to catch up more to where the low is positioned by the ECMWF by later in the day. All models eventually put the position around 150 miles south of the Four Corners area by early Thursday morning, and then with nearly a direct easterly track, at the NM/TX border by late Thursday evening. The GFS keeps the low closed, as well as the NAM12, though slightly further to the north. The ECMWF is showing the U/L low being at nearly the same location as the GFS, although it becomes an open wave. The Canadian also has the closed low becoming an open wave, although slightly further to the north. Depending on which model verifies, a more northerly track could result in much higher QPF values over the southeastern plains. There will be enough warm air advection that might allow for some of the snow showers to be mixed with rain near the KS border. The initial convective wave moving through with higher PVA moving overhead may produce a band of moderate to heavy snow by Wednesday afternoon over the southern half of the CWA. Depending on where this materializes, it could put down very heavy amounts of snow over the areas of the southern mountains and plains. This could affect portions of the southern I-25 corridor during the evening commute on Wednesday. There will be a substantial amount of warm air advection, which could raise snow levels over the eastern plains, so there could be areas that have snow mixing with rain or changing over to all rain depending on how much WAA occurs. Some of the soundings suggest all rain for Springfield from Wednesday night through Thursday, while other models have a transition over to snow by around 10 PM Wednesday evening. There could just be a mix and very limited snow accumulation as a result, but the exact snow level is the challenge and could produce a completely different outcome in the way of snow amounts over Baca County if they over-perform. The uncertainty lies within how much the WAA causes snow levels to rise. Due to many locations in Las Animas County being high enough in elevation for precip to be predominantly snow, there could be some locations that receive 6 inches or more through late Thursday evening. Given the instability, it cannot be ruled out for there to possibly be some thundersnow, especially over the San Juan and southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains. For these locations, a foot of snow or more will be possible. The majority of the higher QPF will remained confined to south of US-50, although if there is even a slight shift in the track more northward, there could be much higher snowfall totals to the north of US-50, mainly over Kiowa County. Again, this will all be depended on snow levels and if it gets cold enough to transition over to snow completely by late Wednesday evening. There will be some cold air advection as the system begins to wrap up as it moves out over the plains, which will keep high temperatures stuck in the 30s over the plains in Wednesday, perhaps some low 40s for Baca County. It will be even slightly colder for max temps on Thursday over the plains, running about 10 to 15 degrees below the seasonal average. Friday through Monday... A few lingering snow showers could be over the far eastern plains early in the morning on Friday, but will continue to move out as the U/L progresses further eastward and allows high pressure to build back in. Northerly flow will keep temperatures cold on Friday, especially for the plains, with temperatures around 10 to 15 degrees below the seasonal average. Ensembles display a ridge building back in over the inner mountain west as the U/L low continues to exit the region. This will allow for a return of drier conditions, with a rebound in temperatures by this weekend and through early next week. Temperatures will remain below the seasonal average through Saturday, but then be back above average from Sunday through Monday. -Stewey && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon) Issued at 1021 AM MST Tue Dec 12 2023 KPUB and KALS... There will be less in the way of snow showers north of Highway 50, with only light to moderate snowfall accumulations anticipated.
