.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 344 AM MDT Mon Apr 24 2023

Key Messages:

1) Increasing chances for higher terrain snows, though amounts stay
light through the period.

2) Scattered rain showers with isolated thunderstorms especially
along and south of Highway 50 this afternoon.

Relatively quiet early this morning as zonal flow lacking any
synoptic ascent along with drier air are in place. Can see some more
aggressive mid levels across southern Utah on latest water vapor
imagery, with RAP analysis showing some increased moisture tied to
this feature. As this energy and additional energy move across the
area today, will see increasing chances for precip across southern
Colorado. While scattered in nature, will likely see this scattered
development over much of southern Colorado later this morning into
the afternoon hours. Scattered snow showers are expected across the
mountains and potentially the high mountain valleys, with rain
showers expected elsewhere. The increases in overall moisture don't
appear to be overly high today and while there will be some decent
ascent in place today, coverage of any more intense showers will be
low. That being said do think there will be enough moisture in place
to support some weak instability later today and as the previously
mentioned upstream energy propagates overhead, could see an isolated
stronger shower or storm. Highest chances for this to occur look to
be along and south of Highway 50, with any stronger shower/storm
capable of producing winds up to 40 to 50 mph. The potential for
this stronger development to occur quickly ends by early evening,
however, isolated to scattered light showers will still be possible
for much of tonight as large scale ascent will continue to increase
ahead of the next system to move across the region.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday)
Issued at 344 AM MDT Mon Apr 24 2023

Key Messages:

1) Impactful rain and snow expected for Tuesday and Wednesday across
the area.

2) Strong thunderstorms possible on our far southeastern plains for
Tuesday afternoon.

3) Our cooler and more active weather pattern continues as we head
into this weekend.

Tuesday and Wednesday..

A strong system makes its way into the region for Tuesday and
Wednesday, bringing a variety of expected impacts to include:
potential Winter Weather Highlights for the high country, to strong
thunderstorms and excessive rainfall for our lower elevations. The
SPC has portions of Baca and Las Animas counties under a marginal
risk for severe thunderstorms on Tuesday afternoon, and the WPC has
nearly all of our plains under a marginal risk for excessive
rainfall for both Tuesday and Wednesday.

For the high country, snow continues along the Continental Divide
Tuesday morning, spreading into our eastern mountains and the Pikes
Peak region by Tuesday afternoon as the low makes its way into
southwestern Colorado. Strong lift and orographics will lead to
periods of moderate to heavy snowfall on Tuesday afternoon,
especially for our central mountains, the Sawatch Mountains, and
higher elevations of Teller and Fremont counties. Highest forecast
snow totals have consistently fallen over Pikes Peak and Teller
County, where deep isentropic ascent flows straight into the
Ramparts. Potentially warning level snow amounts are also possible
over the central mountains, the Sawatch Range, The Sangres, The
Wets, and The Palmer Divide as well. Have stuck with our Watch for
these areas with this package, as we continue to hone in on how much
snow we are expecting with this system. Though air temps will be
near freezing, travel impacts will still be possible as snowfall
rates overcome warmer road temperatures overnight and into Wednesday
morning. The I-25 corridor could see impacts for the Wednesday
morning commute, especially over the Palmer Divide. Snowfall rates
begin to decrease after midnight Tuesday night for the Continental
Divide, with lighter upslope enhanced snowfall continuing for our
eastern mountains and the Palmer Divide well into Wednesday.

For our plains, rain showers and thunderstorms are likely for
Tuesday afternoon, as the low digs down into southwestern Colorado.
Lee troughing and influx of 40 dewpoints from our east could lead to
the development of stronger thunderstorms on our southeastern plains
Tuesday afternoon if we manage to overcome a fairly robust cap early
enough. If stronger storms do develop in this area, strong wind and
hail will both be possible given the amount of shear that will be
present. The NAM is showing a dry air intrusion along and south of
highway 50 for Tuesday afternoon, which would limit wetting rain and
thunderstorms for several hours on our plains. At this time, that
solution seems to be the outlier, but still something to keep an eye
on.

After sunset our snow levels begin to lower, allowing for a rain
snow mix and eventual transition to snow over some of our mountain
adjacent plains. This will make for a very tricky rain and snow
delineation over El Paso County. Current thinking is that snow
levels will likely fall to around 6,000 feet for several hours in
the early morning hours of Wednesday, which would mean a few to
several hours of heavy wet snow over much of El Paso county. There
is still a lot of uncertainty with forecast snow totals for the
Colorado Springs area, but much needed moisture is expected either
way, whether it comes in the form of a few inches of heavy wet snow
or as mostly rain. By Wednesday morning, deep upslope sets up across
our mountain adjacent plains, leading to continued light to moderate
snow over our eastern mountains and light to moderate rain along the
I-25 corridor.

Thursday Onwards..

Overnight low temperatures look to fall below freezing Thursday
morning as skies begin to clear out behind the departing system.
Despite northwesterly flow, clear skies will help us to warm back
into the 50s and 60s for most on Thursday afternoon, with fairly
quiet weather and weak winds in store for this day. Models remain in
agreement that our next system arrives on Friday, with a cold front
pushing through in time to keep our temperatures cooler on Friday
afternoon. Precipitation chances increase for Friday, with our
cooler and more active pattern continuing into this weekend.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon)
Issued at 1130 AM MDT Mon Apr 24 2023

KALS: West-northwest winds across the terminal today, with clouds
hovering just above MVFR. Scattered rain showers are expected in
the area this afternoon after 20Z, but none are expected to pose
impacts to the terminal at this time. Winds will turn more south
tonight, with more showers popping up around 09Z and pushing cigs
down to MVFR. Ceilings raise and winds stay south tomorrow
morning.

KCOS: Low-end VFR clouds and scattered vicinity showers are
expected this afternoon into evening, with winds turning from
northerly to more southerly towards evening. Showers are expected
to move over the terminal before midnight, with cigs just above or
at MVFR and potential brief reductions to visibility. Overall,
minor impacts are expected and the precipitation should clear by
07Z or so as the showers move on. After, weak southeast winds and
VFR conditions return.

KPUB: Southeast winds at or below 10 knots are expected through
this period, with clouds staying near 10kft. Showers will pass
through the area this afternoon but should not have any impacts
on the terminal until about 06Z. Cloud cover will briefly dip
close to high-end MVFR and falling rain could briefly impact vis
for about an hour or so. Once the rain showers move on, light
winds and VFR conditions. There is a low-end chance for fog at the
terminal early tomorrow morning, between 09-15Z. Currently, low
confidence as it will depend on how much rain the terminal gets,
so it was not included in this round of TAFs. Will closely monitor
incoming guidance and adjust as needed.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

Snow showers are likely along the Continental Divide, with rain,
virga, and weak thunderstorms possible over the lower elevations
especially along and south of Highway 50 this afternoon. The main
hazards associated with any thunderstorms will be cloud to ground
lightning, and gusty outflow winds up to 45 mph.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

A potent weather system pushes through in the Tuesday and
Wednesday timeframe, bringing chances for moderate to heavy
mountain snow, excessive rainfall for our plains, and the possible
development of strong thunderstorms as well. Travel impacts due
to snow will be possible for the high country, especially for the
Pikes Peak region, our central mountains, the Sangre De Cristos,
and the Wet Mountains. Off and on chances for rain, snow, and
thunderstorms continue for Friday through Sunday, as our cooler
and more active pattern remains in place over the region.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...

Weather conditions that meet reporting criteria for spotters will
be possible over portions of the region.
