.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Key messages:

1) Spotty near-critical fire weather conditions over the southeast
corner of the state this afternoon.

2) Snow returns to the southwest mountains after midnight tonight.

Currently...Snow is lingering across Wolf Creek Pass and the eastern
San Juan Mts early this morning, otherwise skies are mostly clear
for much of the forecast area. Temps as of 3 AM have dropped into
the teens to around 20 degrees for most locations.

Today...Weak upper ridge of high pressure currently over the desert
southwest will shift to the east across the Four Corners, shifting
the flow aloft to a more westerly direction and keeping much of the
area dry. There may be isolated snow shower activity over the
southwest mts, but noteworthy snow accumulation is not expected.
Increasing west to southwest surface winds will help boost temps
across the eastern plains, and spotty near-critical fire weather
conditions are likely across Baca and Prowers counties. However, it
should be only for a couple of hours during the afternoon so no
highlights will be issued. Plan on high temps today in the 40s for
the high valleys, and generally 50s across the plains.

Tonight...As the upper ridge continues east out of the area tonight,
another upper disturbance pushes onshore across the Pacific NW. The
flow aloft shifts to the southwest and taps into available moisture
to help produce increasing cloud cover and snow once again across
western CO and along the Continental Divide. Mostly cloudy skies are
anticipated for all of the higher terrain and high valleys by
daybreak Monday morning, as well as 2 to 3 inches of new snow across
the eastern San Juan Mts. Look for overnight low temps in the teens
to lower 20s for the high valleys, and 20s across the plains. Moore

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)

There is good agreement between the operational model guidance
through Thursday, with difference from Friday through next
weekend. Ensembles tend to support the Ecmwf and Canadian
solutions, with the GFS the outlier at this time.

Monday through Thursday...generally west to southwest flow is
expected to prevail across southern Colorado through midweek, with
multiple waves bringing rounds of snow to the Mountains, and windy
conditions to the Plains.

The first upper wave will pass across the region Monday through
Monday night. Snow will spread over the Mountains Monday morning
and continue through Monday night. The heaviest snowfall is
expected over the San Juan Range given the southwesterly
orographic flow. Decent snow will also fall over the remainder of
the Mountains during this period. Westerly winds will lead to
breezy conditions Monday afternoon, which will help temperatures
warm into the mid 50s to lower 60s. The main wave will be passing
to the north Monday night, and guidance is suggesting strong
westerlies developing Monday night into Tuesday morning along the
lee slopes of the Eastern Mountains. This will keep overnight lows
in the 40s along the lee slopes, with 30s across the Plains. At
this time, wind prone areas along the I-25 corridor will likely
see gusts in the 30 to 40 mph range late Monday night into Tuesday
morning.

Periods of snow will continue over the Mountains through the day
Tuesday. Snow does not look too heavy at this time for Tuesday,
with a few inches possible along the Continental Divide. Breezy
conditions will remain across the Plains. Enhanced mixing will
allow temperatures to warm through the 60s. A few spotty areas of
critical fire weather conditions may be possible along the I-25
corridor due to the gusty winds and humidity values near 15
percent. Winds will remain breezy across the Plains Tuesday night,
which will help keep overnight lows mild in the 30s and 40s.

The next upper wave will move across the region Wednesday into
Thursday. This will bring another round of heavy snow to the
Continental Divide, with the heaviest snow over the San Juan
Range. This upper wave will lift northeast, from western Colorado
into Wyoming. This will keep the Plains dry and windy. Winds will
be strongest Wednesday afternoon, with gusts 40 to 50 mph over the
Plains. Locally higher gusts may be possible. Again, near critical
fire weather conditions will be possible along the I-25 corridor,
with humidity values in the upper teens. Enhanced mixing will
allow for temperatures to warm into the 70s.

A cold front will drop south across the region Wednesday night
with cooler temperatures for Thursday. Highs on the Plains will be
in the 50s to near 60. There will be less wind as well. Snow looks
to remain confined to the Mountains on Thursday, becoming lighter
in nature as the upper system moves away from the area.

As for snow totals, the San Juan Range will likely pick up another
1 to 4 feet of snow through Thursday. Higher amounts may be
possible. The Central Mountains will also do well with 1 to 2 feet
possible. The Sangre de Cristo will likely see up to a foot, with
the highest totals expected south of La Veta Pass. These totals
are subject to change as each individual wave impacts the area.

Friday through Sunday...another upper storm system is forecast to
move across the Rockies during this time period. There are big
differences in the model solutions, with the ECMWF and Canadian
bringing across an open wave, while the GFS closes off an upper
low and slowly moves it across the region.

The ECMWF and Canadian solutions keep snow confined to the
Mountains, with periods of heavy snow for the Continental Divide.
Ensembles tend to support an open wave. The outlier GFS wants to
bring heavy snow to the Eastern Mountains and across the Plains
over the weekend. The GFS set up would favor strong northeasterly
upslope flow and much colder temperatures over the weekend. The
Ecmwf and Canadian would keep more southwesterly flow across the
region and warmer temperatures. For now, kept most precipitation
over the Mountains, with low chances on the Plains. Also keep
temperatures more mild, with 50s for Friday and Saturday, before a
cold front cools highs into the 40s on Sunday. Mozley

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Intermittent light snow showers will linger over the southwest
mountains today, then increase in areal coverage and intensity after
midnight tonight. 2 to 3 inches of new snow will be possible across
the eastern San Juan Mountains by daybreak Monday.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday

Snow, heavy at times, will be possible Monday through Monday night
along the Continental Divide. Areas over the San Juan
Mountains will see the heaviest snowfall. Lighter snowfall is
expected Tuesday, before another round of heavy snow moves into
the Continental Divide Wednesday into Thursday. The San Juan Range
will see the heaviest snowfall. Accumulations for the Monday
through Thursday period could be as high as 1 to 4 feet over the
San Juan Range, 1 to 2 feet over the Central Mountains, and up to
a foot over the Sangre de Cristo Range.

Strong winds will be possible across the Plains on Wednesday, with
gusts near 50 mph possible.

Another storm system will bring snow to the Mountains Friday into
the weekend.
