.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday)
Issued at 244 PM MST Wed Feb 15 2023

Key Messages:

1) A Winter Storm is bringing light to moderate snow to most of the
forecast area, as it continues to push east.

2) Colder temperatures and dangerous wind chills set in overnight
tonight and into tomorrow morning, especially for northern El Paso
county and the Palmer Divide.

Currently..

As the surface low moves overhead, snow continues across most of the
area. Heavy snow is finally beginning to diminish in the San Luis
Valley, where visibility has improved to around 1SM as of 2pm.
Easterly gap flow winds have continued to gust in this area as well,
but have come down to around 35 mph as of 2pm. Snowfall rates have
tapered somewhat across portions of the plains as well, especially
for areas north of highway 50, as better forcing remains south.

Rest of Tonight..

Light to moderate snow will likely continue for the next few hours
across our southern plains, especially over the Raton Mesa, where
700mb frontogenesis is strongest. As the best forcing and warm air
advection drift eastward with the baroclinic zone, light to moderate
snowfall will likely continue across our far eastern border until
around midnight. We are left in cold and breezy north-northeasterly
flow behind the departing system, as it exits into Kansas through
the overnight hours. Northerly winds are expected to gust up to 45
mph across the Palmer Divide tonight, which will lead to apparent
temperatures in the teens below zero across most of El Paso county.
A Wind Chill Advisory has been issued for the Palmer Divide from 7pm
this evening until 8am tomorrow morning, where wind chills are
expected to fall to -20F through the early morning hours of
tomorrow. Elsewhere, temperatures bottom out in the low teens and
single digits across the rest of the plains, with subzero
temperatures expected for the high country. Sky conditions will
clear from west to east, which could lead to some fog or low stratus
for the San Luis Valley early tomorrow morning, especially given the
amount of snow they have received today. Have decided to leave
mention of fog out of tonight's forecast for now though, given that
there will not be much time for melting this evening.

Tomorrow..

We remain under strong northerly flow aloft for tomorrow, as a ridge
builds in from our west. Winds and cloud cover continue to diminish
through tomorrow morning as well, but temperatures remain around 10
to 15 degrees below normal for most. High are expected to stay in
the low to mid 30s for our plains and low to mid 20s for our
mountain valleys tomorrow afternoon.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Wednesday)

Key Messages:

1) Warming and drying trend into the weekend

2) Cooler with increases chances of mountain snows next week.

.Thursday night through Saturday...Shortwave ridge builds into the
region with drying and milder weather. Have concerns that snow
cover on the plains may keep temperatures cooler than expected
with the warming aloft. The NBM maximums for Friday look
reasonable with highs on the plains cooler than what would be
anticipated by the warming at 700mb. See no need to adjust
maximums on Friday. Highs on Saturday will depend on amount of
snow cover. They still look to be cooler than what would be
expected from the warming aloft so will not edit the grids. Later
shifts can adjust the maximums based on snow cover.

.Saturday night and Sunday...First is a series of troughs moves
into the region from the northwest. One concern will be the
potential for stronger winds over and near the eastern mountains.
The deterministic models have 700mb winds from the northwest
around 40 knots late Saturday and into Sunday. NBM 50 percent
probability for peak wind gusts Sunday are in the mid 30s knots to
mid 40 knots range along the Interstate 25 corridor with the
strongest winds near Walsenburg. The peak wind gusts in the grids
are less because of the temporal averaging amount the various
ensemble members. As the trough moves into the region, chances
for snow increase over the Continental Divide region, mainly in
Lake and Chaffee Counties.

.Monday through Wednesday...The jet stream will shift south over
the intermountain west with west to northwest flow aloft. Main
influence on the weather will be to increase snowfall chances over
the mountains with the highest accumulations over the Continental
Divide region. Deterministic models and ensembles suggest one
trough moving into the region around Tuesday with another stronger
trough moving into the region sometime on Wednesday or later.
Some ensemble members suggest snow is possible over the eastern
mountains and plains with these troughs. Currently, any
accumulations on the plains and eastern mountains look to be light
but a few members have higher accumulations. --PGW--

At KCOS and KPUB..IFR ceilings and visibilities are expected to
improve to MVFR by around 5pm this evening at the latest. Northerly
winds will likely gust up to 30kt at both stations through the
overnight hours which could lead to some areas of blowing snow.
Expecting clearing sky conditions and continued northerly winds for
most of tomorrow.

At KALS..As of 22Z, snow has begun to diminish over station, with
MVFR ceilings and unrestricted visibilities looking to persist
through the rest of this evening. Clearing sky conditions and light
northwesterly winds are expected for most of tomorrow.

Continued light to moderate snowfall is expected over portions of
the forecast area, especially along and south of highway 50.
Northerly wind gusts in excess of 40 mph will continue to produce
areas of blowing snow across the plains and dangerous wind chill
readings.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Dangerously cold Wind chills as low as -20F are likely for the
Palmer Divide tonight into tomorrow morning, with cold
temperatures persisting into Friday morning as well. A few snow
showers are possible over the weekend into early next week over
the mountains.
