.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Key messages:

1) Light snow to continue this afternoon and evening across the
central mountains.
2) Gusty west winds possible this afternoon across eastern Fremont
and western Pueblo counties, and across Huerfano County.

Currently...Brisk west to northwest flow aloft continues across the
region, with some mid and high level cloudiness streaming off the
central mts and the Pikes Peak region. Light snow has been
intermittent across the central mts early this morning. Temperatures
this morning have been highly variable, with most areas reporting
teens and 20s though the San Luis Valley has dropped into the single
digits and Alamosa is reporting below zero.

Today and tonight...A shortwave in the predominant northwest flow
aloft will track across the Great Basin this morning and into
Colorado through the day. This will serve to enhance a couple of
things.

First, intermittent snow showers over the central mts this morning
will start to pick up in intensity through the afternoon and
evening, producing generally 3 to 5 inches of new snow primarily
focused along the Continental Divide in Lake and Chaffee counties.
Localized higher amounts may occur. The remainder of the higher
terrain may see some very light accumulations, but again much of the
new snow is expected over the central mts.

Second, the flow aloft will shift to a more westerly direction as
the pressure gradient tightens, and gusty west winds will be
possible this afternoon through early evening across the higher
terrain as well as wind-prone areas along the I-25 Corridor. Gusts
of 40 to 50 mph will be possible for the higher elevations, while
gusts of 25 to 30 mph will be possible across the I-25 Corridor,
especially across eastern Fremont and western Pueblo counties, and
across Huerfano County.

Plan on high temps today in the 30s for the high valleys, 40s across
the plains, and those areas with extensive snow cover remaining will
struggle to climb out of the 30s. Minimums tonight are forecast to
drop into the 10 to 20 degree range for most areas, though the San
Luis Valley will once again drop to 5 below to 5 above. Moore

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday)

Main concerns for the long term forecast will be precipitation types
and temperatures, as arctic air intrudes from Saturday through
Tuesday.

Saturday and Saturday Night..

For our plains.. A strong backdoor cold front pushes through
Saturday morning, keeping daytime highs near freezing for most of
Kiowa, Bent and Prowers counties. Locations that will have a few
hours of warming before the front arrives could see highs into the
upper 30s and low 40s, but for the most part our cold air intrusion
really settles in by midday Saturday, as the front pushes into New
Mexico. As winds shift eastward and upslope sets up behind the
front, precipitation initiates on our plains. Precipitation type
will be tricky, with high res models consistently indicating the
possibility of freezing drizzle across portions of our plains,
mainly through the highway 50 corridor and possibly up into the
Colorado Springs area. Forecast skew-ts have been indicating this
possibility for several runs now, with the NAM showing chances for
freezing drizzle from around 5pm until near midnight. The GFS cools
the column much quicker, changing precip over to snow within an hour
or so for the Colorado Springs area. Depending on the extent of
freezing drizzle, travel impacts will be possible for Saturday night
into Sunday morning, especially along the I-25 corridor and highway
50. Freezing fog is also likely during this period.

For the high country..Light to moderate snow is expected to continue
for our central mountains through most of Saturday. Elsewhere, very
light snow showers are possible for the La Garitas, the San Juans,
and the northern Sangres. Temperatures warm into the 30s for
mountain valleys and teens to 20s for higher terrain locations.
Gusty westerly winds are expected as well, especially across Lake
and Chaffee counties, where winds could gust up to 50 mph Saturday
afternoon.

Sunday and Monday..

We stay chilly on our plains with highs into the teens and lows 20s
for most, before a reinforcing push of arctic air arrives Sunday
night into Monday as the main trough axis pushes through. Another
round of light snow will be possible Monday morning, mainly along
and north of highway 50, and especially across the Palmer Divide.
Wind chill headlines are a possibility for Monday morning,
especially on our far eastern plains, where apparent temperatures
fall into the 20s below zero. Even though guidance continues to
trend toward colder temperatures, the NBM still seems a bit too
conservative, therefore have undercut guidance by about 5 to 10
degrees for now. Forecast daytime highs are expected to be in the
single digits to low teens above zero for most, though this number
could decrease even more as the event draws nearer.

Tuesday Onwards..

Monday night into Tuesday morning lows appear to be similar to the
previous night's as of now, with most locations in the single digits
below zero. These numbers could decrease a few more degrees though,
especially if any snow pack or early sky clearing takes place, and
especially along the Arkansas River Valley, where the coldest air
tends to pool. Ensemble guidance starts to really diverge by
midweek, but the general consensus seems to be that we moderate by
Wednesday afternoon as high pressure begins to build back in over
the Great Basin. We look to be back to normal temperature wise by
Thursday, with another low pressure system passing to our south
late week.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Intermittent snow showers will continue across the central mountains
today, picking up in intensity through the afternoon and early
evening. New snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are expected,
primarily focused across the higher elevations of Lake and northern
Chaffee counties. Localized higher amounts will be possible.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday

Light snow returns to much of southern Colorado this weekend and
into next week, with minimal impacts expected for the high country.
There is a possibility of freezing drizzle and freezing fog Saturday
night into Sunday morning across the eastern plains, which could
lead to slick spots on roads and hazardous travel conditions.
Much below average temperatures are still expected, especially
Sunday night through Tuesday morning, as Arctic air spills into
the region.
