.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Key Message

1) Critical Fire Weather conditions today over the San Luis Valley,
southeast mountains, and southern Interstate 25 corridor.

Currently...Quiet weather over the forecast area. Cold front has
brought a modest increase in moisture to the plains, Interstate 25
corridor, and lower elevations of the eastern mountains.

.Today...It will be another breezy to windy day over the San Luis
Valley with humidities sufficiently low for critical fire weather
conditions.  Further east, low level moisture remains over the
plains and Interstate 25 corridor behind the cold front.  Expect
south to southeast winds will continue over the plains today, and
the south to southeast winds would prevent the humidities from
reaching critical fire weather values during the day.  The forecast
challenge for fire weather condition will be the southeast mountain
and southern interstate 25 corridor. Guidance indicates the upslope
flow will persist over the plains during the day.  Currently looks
like there will be enough mixing over the southeast mountains and
nearby Interstate 25 corridor for humidities to lower to critical
fire weather values. Maintained the current red flag warning with
the best chances for red flag conditions in the San Luis Valley.
With a weak disturbance moving over the region expect light showers
with some thunder to develop over the mountains during the afternoon
and move eastward. Greatest chances for convection will be over the
Palmer Divide with southerly flow producing some convergence and the
atmosphere being modestly unstable.  Warm temperatures continue with
highs in the 80s on the plains.

.Tonight...Any convection will move eastward during the evening.
There are indications that the convection may linger more during the
evening near the Kansas border and kept isolated PoP well into the
night. Otherwise, anticipate a dry and mild night.  Winds should
decrease during the evening. --PGW--

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday)

Key Messages:

1) Critical fire weather conditions continue Tue over the San
   Luis valley and southeast mountains.

2) Strong to severe storms possible Wednesday across the plains.

Strengthening mid/upper level sw flow expected across srn CO on
Tue, as upper level wave digs southward along the West Coast. At
the surface, dry air will remain in place over the mountains and
valleys, leading to another day of critical fire weather conditions
over the San Luis Valley and southern mts, as gusty sw winds
again appear by afternoon. Situation on the plains a little less
clear cut, as surface low spins up near la Junta and low level
flow becomes easterly in the afternoon, potentially wrapping some
higher dewpoints westward late in the day. For now, will keep I-25
corridor and plains out of the current Fire Weather Watch, though
may need to add some of the srn I-25 corridor to the highlight at
some point, as models have trended drier in this area this
morning. Convective chances look minimal on Tue, as best low
level moisture/instability remain e-ne, and most forecast
soundings show significant capping inversion/CIN over all of the
sern plains. SWODY2 has marginal risk in place for a good portion
of the plains east of I-25 Tue, but at this point, tough to find
a model or mechanism to generate convection in sc/se CO, as better
forcing will be in nern CO and northward, so will follow dry NBM
forecast for now. Tue should be the warmest day of the week, with
maxes deep into the 80s across the sern plains.

Upper low swings eastward toward CO Tue night into Wed, with
system taking a negative tilt as it approaches the area late in
the day. This should allow low level moisture and instability to
push westward into the I-25 corridor by early Wed morning, setting
the stage for an active convective day over the plains Wed as
CAPE east of I-25 will climb into the 1-2k J/KG range as mid level
lapse rates steepen, while 0-6km shear rises to around 40 kts
initially, then climbs further in the evening as low level winds
turn easterly in response to deepening low pressure ne of
Trinidad. As a result, SWODY3 has much of the area from I-25
eastward in a marginal risk for severe weather, with the slight
risk area clipping Kiowa/Prowers/Bent Counties, which appears
reasonable at this point. Models then diverge slightly Wed night
Thu, mainly in the position of the upper low as it ejects
northeastward across CO. Slower solutions (00z GFS/ECMWF included)
would suggest precip lingers for much of Thu as moisture wraps
around the system into srn CO, while faster/farther north
solutions (including 00z/06z NAM) shift precip into nern CO/srn
WY/NE Panhandle, with drier sly flow wrapping into the system.
Forecast at this point splits the difference, with highest pops
north/lower pops south near the NM border.

Forecast confidence lessens from Friday into the weekend, as several
pieces of energy drift through the wrn U.S. under the building wrn
North American ridge. Models/ensembles seem in rough consensus
that wave lifts northward from wrn TX over the weekend, perhaps
enhancing convection over srn zones Sat night/Sun, though timing
spread is rather large at this point. Overall, stuck with the NBM
pops/qpf Fri-Mon, though confidence in the timing/location of any
convective precip at this point is low. Should be enough clouds
and moisture around from Fri onward to keep temps near/cooler than
seasonal averages at most locations.

VFR conditions are expected at all three TAF sites, KCOS, KPUB, and
KALS for the next 24 hours. Southwesterly winds gusting up to 35kt
are expected for KALS this afternoon. Southeasterly winds gusting up
to 25kt are expected for KCOS and KPUB. Winds are expected to weaken
after around 02Z this evening. Mid-level cloud coverage is expected
to decrease through the overnight hours, with precipitation chances
remaining low at all three sites. Thunderstorms could develop within
the vicinity of KCOS this afternoon, but will likely remain off
station over the higher terrain north and west of the terminal.
Gusty and variable outflow winds are possible near virga and
thunderstorms this afternoon as well, mainly in the vicinity of KCOS
from around 21Z to 02Z.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

Critical fire weather conditions, due to gusty winds and low
humidities, will occur this afternoon and into the early evening
over the San Luis Valley, southeast mountains, and southern
Interstate 25 corridor.

Isolated to scattered thunderstorms will develop this afternoon,
mainly over the mountains and Palmer Divide.  The main threats from
these storms will be wind gusts to 40 mph along with lightning.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

Critical fire weather conditions are expected again on Tuesday,
mainly over the San Luis Valley and southeast mountains. On
Wednesday, Low level moisture will increase across the plains,
with a risk of severe storms from I-25 eastward to the Kansas
border into Wednesday evening.

Thunderstorms will then be possible each day from Thursday into
the weekend, with the greatest chance for storms over the
southeast mountains and adjacent plains.
