Updated to extend the Red Flag Warning for Pueblo, Huerfano and
western Las Animas Counties through 4 AM. Humidity recoveries are
expected to be poor overnight across much of the region, with the
areas along and west of the southern I-25 corridor seeing
recoveries less than 20 percent. Downslope winds along the lee
slopes of the Eastern Mountains are possible overnight, with gusts
50 to 60 mph. The combination of gusty winds and poor humidity
recoveries will lead to the extended period of high fire danger
overnight, which is a bit uncommon for southern Colorado.  Mozley

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Key Messages:

1) High Fire Danger expected Today across all of south central and
southeast Colorado; some blowing dust likely.

2) Winds could get rather strong today in the SLV, especially the NW
part of the valley floor.

3) Snow showers central mtns later tonight.

Currently...

Skies were predominantly clear over the region at 3 AM this morning.
SOme wave clouds were noted over the San Juans, with overall
increasing clouds over the western slope. Winds were relatively
light, but flow was from a SW direction over most of the region.
Temps at this hour were all over the place, with temps near 60s over
far SE CO in Baca county while Kiowa county was around 40F. The
mtn/plains interface was warm with readings around 50F. the Larger
valleys were in the 20s, with the mtns showing the same general
temps.

Dewpts at this hour were already in teh single digits over most of
teh mtns, valleys and general I-25 corridor region. Higher dewpts
were over the far eastern plains.

Today...

Classic Red Flag day over all of the region except the CONTDVD
areas. SW surface flow will pick up by late morning/early afternoon
all region, and RH values will drop into the single digits across
all of the plains with L10s S mtns and valleys. Over the plains
expect winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph most areas, with
stronger winds over the greater Walsenburg region. The valley will
likely see the strongest winds with gusts to 50 mph possible. Hi res
guidance was hinting at some winds possibly approaching 60 mph over
the NW sections of the San Luis Valley floor during the late
afternoon. I have introduced some blowing dusts into the gridds for
this afternoon and early evening.

It will be quite warm today with readings in the mid 70s N El Paso
county to mid to upper 80s over the far eastern plains. SLV will see
mid 60s.

Tonight...

Red Flag conditions are expected to last into the early to mid
evening hours, especially the S I-25 corridor region from Pueblo
county down to south of Walsenburg. Overall, humidity recovery is
likely to be poor over the plains tonight, especially along and
south of US50. Winds are expected to remain rather gusty tonight
along the mtns/plains interface, with gusts to 35 to 45 likely to
continue through the nighttime hours. If a fire should start on the
eastern slopes of the southern mtns, it may become quite problematic
due to the winds keep up and poor RH recovery.

A cool front is fcst to push into the plains late tonight, and may
reach as far south as US50 by sunrise.

Later tonight, snow showers will be possible over the central mtns,
mainly from Cottonwood Pass northward.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

Key Messages:

1) Precipitation chances increase for the mountains and areas around
El Paso County during Wednesday.

2) Critical fire weather conditions likely for parts of southern
Colorado Wednesday.

3) Unsettled weather continues for the end of the week, with more
precipitation chances and cooler temperatures.

4) Warmer and drier weather expected for the weekend and into the
start of next week.

Wednesday: The midweek timeframe will bring an active day of weather
to southern Colorado, with both precipitation and fire weather
concerns. Synoptically, the southern periphery of a larger trough
will be pushing over the southern Colorado region. While major
synoptic forcing will remain to the north of the area, there is
still expected to be a slight increase in larger scale forcing. In
addition to that, orographic forcing is also anticipated to increase
given the stronger winds aloft in place. With the uptick in both
synoptic and orographic forcing, precipitation is expected to
develop over the mountains, particularly the western and central
mountains, with isolated to scattered light snow showers
materializing throughout the day. Across lower elevations, such as
the San Luis Valley, the I25 corridor, and eastern plains, dry
conditions are anticipated given the lack of any appreciable
forcing. With that said though, the exception to this will be within
El Paso County, where forcing along a surging cold front and upslope
behind it will aid in the development of snow showers. Given that
major forcing is expected to remain to the north though, snow
showers across El Paso County are anticipated to remain light and
isolated to scattered in nature. Then later overnight, as forcing
from the trough and front lessens, precipitation across southern
Colorado is expected to decrease in coverage. In addition to the
precipitation concerns, fire weather will also be a problem during
the day. Diurnal mixing is anticipated to mix down stronger wind
gusts and drier air to the surface during the day, with gusts to
around 40-50mph and low dewpoints tanking humidity values to around
8-13%. This will allow for critical fire weather conditions to
develop across the San Luis Valley and parts of the I25 corridor and
eastern plains. With that said though, the aforementioned cold front
will play a huge role in how fire weather conditions ultimately
materialize. Areas south of the front will easily reach critical
fire weather conditions and areas north will not experience critical
fire weather conditions. Current thinking is that the front is
expected to sag southward early in the day, and hover around a line
from El Paso County to the southeast to around Bent and Prowers
Counties. There is still some uncertainty on where the front will
exactly end up, and if the front moves further north or south than
currently anticipated, then that will drastically change what areas
do and don't experience critical fire weather conditions. As for
temperatures, a lot will depend on cold front placement as well.
Areas south of the front will experience a relatively warm day, with
downsloping winds keeping temperatures above average, whereas areas
north of the front will closer to around average temperatures for
this time of year.

Thursday - Friday: For the later part of the week, active weather is
expected to continue for southern Colorado. Ensemble model guidance
are in good agreement about a shortwave digging in behind the larger
scale trough during this period. This feature will aid in better
synoptic and orographic lift, and given that, an uptick in
precipitation across much of southern Colorado is anticipated. The
greatest chances will be along the mountains where forcing will be
strongest. This wave will also push another cold front southward
across the region late Thursday into Friday morning. This front,
along with better synoptic support, is expected to heighten
precipitation chances for the I25 corridor and eastern plains as
well. As for temperatures, a cooler couple of days is anticipated
for southern Colorado. Given the cold front from Wednesday and
reinforcement of the colder air late Thursday, much of southern
Colorado is expected to be experience slightly below average
temperatures for this time of year.

Saturday - Monday: For the weekend and start of next week, a
downtrend in active weather is anticipated. Height rises and the
formation of a ridge of high pressure is expected behind the
troughing pattern. This ridging pattern will start to increase
subsidence over the area, and given that, drier conditions are
expected. With that said though, signals remain that some weak
shortwaves will exist in the overall ridging flow, which could bring
a slight uptick in precipitation chances, though mostly for the
mountains. Looking at temperatures, a warming trend is expected for
the southern Colorado region. With the ridging in place, along with
downsloping winds redeveloping, temperatures are anticipated to warm
back to near and slightly above average values for this time of year.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

Critical fire weather conditions are anticipated through this
evening across the entire region except along the Continental
Divide. Wind gusts to 40 to 50 mph area expected with humidity
values in the single digits. Areas over Pueblo, Huerfano and
western Las Animas Counties will see high fire danger into the
overnight hours due to poor humidity recoveries and downslope wind
potential of 50 to 60 mph. Areas of blowing dust will be possible
over the region into this evening.

Some snow showers will be possible late tonight along the
Continental Divide, mainly north of Cottonwood Pass.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday

High fire danger is expected to continue for southern Colorado due
to gusty winds and low humidity values. Critical fire weather
conditions are becoming increasingly likely Wednesday, with more
spotty critical fire weather conditions possible Thursday and Friday.

Periods of light snow are expected along the mountains starting
Wednesday and continuing through at least Friday. There are
increasing chances of snow and rain/snow mix development across
parts of the I25 corridor and eastern plains Wednesday night and
again Thursday night into Friday. Expected impacts from any snow
continue to remain minimal at this time.

Widespread gusty southwesterly winds are expected during the day
Wednesday as a storm system passes over the region, with wind gusts
to around 40-50mph. This could blow around lose objects and make
driving difficult on north - south orientated roads.
