.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Monday)

Key Messages:

1) Critical fire weather conditions are expected to develop Monday
afternoon across the San Luis Valley.

More normal temperatures in place today along with lower dewpoint
air have supported min humidity values around 10 percent in many
locations this afternoon. Any stronger winds have remained limited,
and with this continuing for the remainder of the day, don't
anticipate any widespread critical fire weather conditions. Weak
upper ridging continues Monday with some hints at some passing weak
mid level energy during the afternoon. While this could help with a
slight increase in cloud cover, the rather dry air mass will limit
any precip development. Warming trend continues Monday along with
another day of humidity values at or just below 10 percent. Flow
does begin to increase later in the day and will likely support
gusty southwest winds and a return of critical fire weather
conditions across the San Luis Valley. So have issued a Red Flag
Warning for the San Luis Valley for Monday afternoon. With winds
increasing very late across Fremont County and the southeast
mountains, think a brief window of spotty critical fire weather
conditions will be possible. This trend does not support a Warning
at this time though.

Key Messages:

1) Dry and warm through Wednesday. Critical fire weather conditions
expected.

2) New incoming system around Thursday. More fire weather, but also
slightly cooler (less hot) temperatures and potentially some
precipitation heading into next weekend.

Tuesday-Wednesday...

The upper level ridge will continue to move across the area on
Tuesday, with winds aloft increasing just ahead of the next incoming
system. As a result, conditions across the area will continue to
warm and dry out. High temperatures will climb into the high-70s to
mid-80s across the eastern plains, while the high valleys will sit
in the 60s-70s. Relative humidities look extremely dry, mostly
single digits to low teens, and as such widespread critical fire
weather conditions are expected. Currently have a Fire Weather Watch
out over most of the area, save for some of our western mountains.
Additionally, as the influence from the upper wave begins to affect
the area, some isolated, light showers may be possible over parts of
the Continental Divide, near the higher peaks, but the chances for
that are low, if non-zero. For Wednesday, more of the same with
potentially stronger winds as that trough axis begins to move
through. Timing on the cold front slated to move in with the upper-
low is still in flux, but late Wednesday into Wednesday night is
when it should arrive, bringing with it cooler temperatures and
chances for precipitation.

Wednesday Night Onwards...

Unfortunately, plenty of discrepancy still persists amongst the long-
term model solutions regarding the behavior of our next incoming
system. Overall, trends have been placing most of the synoptic
energy to our north, moving things into our region Weds night into
Thursday, with the cold front pushing south over the plains at the
same time. Where things get less certain is the main trough axis and
low pressure centers. Most deterministic solutions shove a low
across the far northern US, too far away to impact us much, while a
secondary lobe of energy digs down through our general area. The
timing and extent of which, however, is the uncertain part. The EC
sends a broad open wave across the region while the GFS and Canadian
send a slightly stronger trough down through southern Colorado. The
latter solution would give us more precipitation overall, but

ensembles, which lean a bit closer to the GFS solution as well),
precipitation chances will increase for late week, mostly over our
northwest mountains and the Palmer Divide, through next weekend.
Temperatures will decrease slightly as well, with highs dropping
from the 70s down to the 60s, and then potentially high-50s by the
weekend over the plains. Given the cooling temps and uncertainty in
the path of the incoming low, the specifics on precipitation type
and timing will have to be narrowed down over the next few days.

Periods of high fire danger are expected for much of southern
Colorado due to gusty winds and low humidity values. Spotty
critical fire conditions are likely in the San Luis Valley Monday
afternoon, with more widespread critical fire weather conditions
Tuesday and Wednesday.

Periods of light snow are possible from the La Garita Range, north
across the Central Mountains from Wednesday into Friday. Minor
accumulations are possible, especially over the Central Mountains.
