.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Key Messages:

1) Warmer and drier conditions today, with another day of critical
fire weather conditions expected over much of south central and
southeast Colorado.

Relatively quiet across the area early this morning, though steadier
westerly winds remain in place with even some isolated stronger
gusts persisting across the higher elevations. This has helped keep
temperatures mild over much of southern Colorado, though a slight
diminishing trend along with some cooling has occurred here
recently. This trend has been welcomed, as a few locations lee of
the southeast mountains were noting critical fire weather conditions
overnight. Once again, winds have diminished and temperatures have
cooled, with overall conditions improving at this time. Don't think
these conditions will return early this morning, as any stronger
winds/gusts should remained confined to the higher elevations.

The trends overnight did verify the extent of the dry air in place,
which satellite imagery and forecast soundings are indicating. Dew
points across the area have fallen to around zero at this time and
while there are indications we'll note some slight moist advection,
strong daytime mixing will really offset that. So, did go well below
most guidance with dew points for much of the day and even over much
of southern Colorado. Additionally, don't think guidance was really
handling expected highs for today and went higher than most guidance
for high temps today. This is especially the case as most locations
observed higher temperatures than expected on Saturday. Should see
most of the lower elevations observe temps in the 60s, with much of
the southeast plains rising well into the 70s today. These temps and
dew points will result in many locations observing minimum humidity
values around 5 percent today. As winds quickly ramp up later this
morning, critical fire weather conditions are once again expected
over much of south central and southeast Colorado. Did add the
Fremont County/zone to the Red Flag Warning today. Also, with an
expected quick rise in temps and winds this morning, did start the
warning an hour earlier. Will need to monitor the possibility of
starting it even earlier, but at this time, think any critical fire
weather conditions up to mid morning will be spotty. Winds and
humidity values do diminish and improve later this evening, with no
changes made to the current end time.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)

...Severe and potentially damaging winds will occur from Monday
afternoon through Tuesday evening along with blowing dust and very
critical fire weather conditions over portions of southeast
Colorado...

Long term AFD:

Key messages:

1) Severe and potentially damaging winds are expected from Monday
afternoon through Tuesday evening over most of Southeast Colorado.
High impacts to travel will be likely.

2) Fire weather conditions are expected over much of the plains and
the San Luis Valley during the afternoon and early evening on Monday.

3) Some areas of blowing dust will also be possible in the San Luis
Valley on Monday. Blowing dust will also be possible again in the
San Luis Valley, and also the plains, on Tuesday.

4) Snow will begin to move over the ContDvd beginning late Monday
evening and continue to spread eastward on Tuesday, with some of the
snow showers making it over the I-25 corridor and Palmer Divide.

5) Critical fire weather concerns will still be an issue again for
much of the plains during the afternoon on Tuesday, but then begin
to improve each day thereafter through the rest of the week.

6) There will be snow possible over portions of the higher terrain
and adjacent plains from Wednesday through next weekend.

7) Temperatures will be very warm on Monday, then a cold front will
cool things down on Tuesday, with a steady warming trend towards the
end of the week.

Detailed discussion:

Monday through Tuesday...

On Monday, a trough upstream will cause a tightening of the surface
pressure gradient over southeast Colorado, which will cause winds to
become strong and gusty out of the southwest for most areas. With
brute forcing in place over the higher terrain, there will likely be
winds reaching High Wind criteria initially for the Sangre de Cristo
Mountains, and then eventually over the San Juan Mountains later in
the evening on Monday and then coming down below criteria early
Tuesday morning. The San Luis Valley will also become very windy and
likely reach High Wind criteria after the winds from the 700 mb
level are mixed down to the surface. This will cause some areas of
blowing dust to occur throughout the afternoon. These high and
potentially dangerous winds will continue for the Sangre de Cristos,
La Veta pass, Wet Mountains and Wet Mountain Valley through the
night on Monday.

There will be a "backdoor boundary" that will likely keep
temperatures a little cooler for highs on Monday and north of
Highway 50 the relative humidity values higher. Otherwise, there
will be a very dry air mass in place, with relative humidity values
falling below 10 percent for much of the plains by later in the
afternoon. Due to this, critical fire weather conditions will be
likely over most of the plains. Snow will begin to move in over the
ContDvd by later in the evening on Monday and continue to spread
over the higher terrain, with some snow possible over portions of
the I-25 corridor on Tuesday. Best chances of snow will be over the
Palmer Divide and the northern portion of the I-25 corridor.
Temperatures with the downsloping winds will adiabatically warm up
the valleys and plains quite a bit, with values above the seasonal
average for most locations.

A deepening of the longwave trough over the western states
will eventually begin to slowly transition eastward. An associated
area of lower heights will deepen and close off at the 500 and 700
mb levels right around the tri-state point of Colorado, Utah, and
Wyoming early in the morning on Tuesday. Brute force mixing will
also help to force stronger southwest to westerly winds over most of
the CWA later in the day, with very strong and dangerous winds
spreading over the plains by later in the morning and through into
the early evening hours. There will be areas of blowing dust
possible again for the San Luis Valley and also the plains once the
winds start peaking near High Wind criteria by later in the morning.
These severe crosswinds could cause impacts to high profile vehicles
on the I-25 corridor from Pueblo County south to the CO/NM border.
Some of the cross sections are also reflecting some reverse shear
showing up downwind of the southern Sangres, indicative of a
possible mountain wave formation, which could further enhance winds
over the Trinidad area early Tuesday morning. This will continue
into the early evening hours and then as the low pressure moves east
of Colorado and turning of the winds to a more northerly direction
takes shape, winds will begin to diminish and drop below the
threshold.

An associated cold frontal boundary will move through by later in
the day on Tuesday, which will allow for winds to switch to a more
WNW'ly direction and advect in some cooler temperatures, therefore
highs will be noticeably cooler on Tuesday, and below the seasonal
average for most locations. Although it will be cooler, there will
still be very dry air in place, with widespread areas of critical
fire weather conditions likely over much of the plains, mainly south
of Highway 50. Due to it being so dry in the lower levels, it is
likely that much of the precipitation falling over the adjacent
plains will be in the form of virga. This could also enhance some of
these gusty winds during the afternoon on Tuesday. Higher pressure
will subsequently build in with clearing and weakening winds by
later in the evening.

Wednesday through Saturday...

Ensemble members and deterministic models alike still reveal the
unsettled pattern weakening going into the later half of the week as
a general consensus between these models reflect a filling
(weakening) of the trough that will progress eastward as the PFJ
becomes more zonal in its wake. There looks to be a building and
amplification of the ridge out west that will begin to move in over
the region by later in the week. The ECMWF and GFS modes have been
consistent in showing that there will be a cut-off low positioned
over either California or Arizona by early Friday. It is still too
soon to tell, but this could impact Colorado at a later time next
weekend, past the forecast period. Critical fire weather conditions
also appear to diminish each day past Wednesday, with a gradual
warming trend under much more tranquil conditions though Friday,
with only a few snow showers due to the northwesterly flow over the
higher terrain and perhaps a few spilling over into the adjacent
plains and valleys from Wednesday through Saturday.  -Stewey

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Gusty west to southwest winds and low relative humidity values are
once again expected today, with critical fire weather conditions
anticipated across much of south central and southeast Colorado from
mid morning through this evening.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday

Very strong and gusty southwest to west winds, with low relative
humidity values, will produce widespread critical to extreme fire
weather conditions over the I-25 corridor, the San Luis Valley
and much of the southeast plains from mid morning through early
evening on Monday and Tuesday. Blowing dust will be possible for
the San Luis Valley on Monday and Tuesday, and for the plains on
Tuesday. Severe to dangerous crosswinds could cause very critical
impacts to travel if commuting in the San Luis Valley on Monday
and over the plains on Tuesday, especially on the I-25 corridor
south of Pueblo County to the New Mexico border.

Snow will begin to move over the Continental Divide beginning
late Monday evening and continue to spread eastward on Tuesday,
with a few snow showers possible over the I-25 corridor and
Palmer Divide. Light to moderate accumulations are expected, with
the heaviest snowfall amounts in the eastern San Juan Mountains,
where up to six inches of new snow is possible through early Wednesday.

Spotty critical fire weather conditions will be possible for the
plains on Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. There will be a
chance of mainly light snow over the higher terrain and adjacent
plains from Wednesday through Saturday.
