.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 422 AM MDT Sat Apr 1 2023

Key messages:

1) Critical fire weather conditions are once again expected across
much of south central and southeast Colorado today.

A return to more zonal flow is anticipated today, as mid level
energy departs to the east and additional drying occurs across the
region. While there is some additional energy which will likely move
through the region later in the period, the dry air in place will
support continued dry weather. In this setup, expect a quick warming
trend today with a return to above normal temperatures likely for
most areas. No real big changes to the highs for today, with the
highest temperatures in the 60s to around 70 expected across the
plains. The drier air noted above will support falling dewpoints by
midday and into the afternoon. Forecast soundings indicating that
single digit dewpoints will be in place by mid to late afternoon,
and only made slight downward adjustments. The HRRR is showing some
really low dewpoints settling in this afternoon, though did not go
quite this low. Either way, relative humidity values as low as 7
percent are expected this afternoon.

These values and stronger westerly flow aloft still in place with
lee troughing will once again support critical fire weather
conditions across Fremont and Teller counties, the plains, and the
San Luis Valley from late this morning into the evening. Winds will
be gusty today, but will not be nearly as strong as Friday. Did not
make any changes to the current Red Flag Warning in effect for these
areas today. Also, didn't make any changes to the end time though
critical fire weather conditions may still be in place slightly
longer. At this time, these conditions look to be spotty.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday)

Key messages:

1) Fire weather conditions are expected over portions of the I-25
corridor during the afternoon and early evening on Sunday.

2) Snow will begin to move over the ContDvd beginning late Monday
evening and continue to spread eastward on Tuesday, with some of the
snow showers making it over the I-25 corridor and Palmer Divide.

3) There will be snow possible over portions of the higher terrain
and adjacent plains from Thursday through Friday.

4) Critical fire weather concerns will still be an issue for much of
the plains during the afternoon on Monday and Tuesday, but then
begin to improve each day thereafter through the rest of the week.

5) Temperatures will be very warm on Sunday and Monday, then a cold
front will cool things down on Tuesday, with a steady warming trend
towards the end of the week.

Detailed discussion:

Sunday through Sunday night...

A longwave trough upstream over the western states will continue to
propagate towards the region. As it does, this will allow for strong
mid level flow from the WSW to move over Colorado. The tightening of
the surface pressure gradient along with some brute force mixing
from the mid levels into the lower levels will allow for strong and
gusty winds over much of southeast Colorado by the afternoon hours.
In combination with lower relative humidity values along the I-25
corridor and portions of the eastern plains, will result in there
being critical fire weather conditions. Some of the mid to high
level clouds moving over the area may help to inhibit some of the
mixing down to the surface, so perhaps some locations may not see
winds quite as strong.

Although, there will be a sufficient amount of gap flow through the
Arkansas River Valley and La Veta Pass that there will be locations
such as Walsenburg which will likely be flagging throughout most
of the afternoon. Red flag conditions could also extend as far
east as the western half of Kiowa County for several hours, so
this may also need to be added to the Red Flag Warning. With the
downsloping winds, it will adiabatically warm up the plains, so
temperatures will be above average for most areas, especially over
the eastern plains and in the lower Arkansas River Valley. The
winds will allow for mixing to also continue into the night for
areas of the plains, which will keep minimums quite warm and only
down into the lower 40s for a few locations along the banana belt
and southern plains.

Monday through Tuesday...

This trough will eventually begin to slowly transition eastward and
keep the stronger winds in place out of the west as it does. The low
will deepen and close off at the 500 and 700 mb levels right around
the tri-state point of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming early in the
morning on Tuesday. Given the drier air still being in place, there
will be critical fire weather conditions possible again for
widespread areas of the plains during the afternoon and early
evening hours. Snow will begin to move in over the ContDvd by later
in the evening and continue to spread over the higher terrain, with
some snow possible over portions of the I-25 corridor on Tuesday.
Best chances of snow will be over the Palmer Divide and the northern
portion of the I-25 corridor.

An associated cold frontal boundary will move through by later in
the day on Tuesday, which will allow for winds to switch to a more
WNW'ly direction and advect in some cooler temperatures, therefore
highs will be noticeably cooler on Tuesday, and below the seasonal
average for most locations. Although it will be cooler, there will
still be very dry air in place, and winds during the afternoon will
become gusty, so some widespread areas of critical fire weather
conditions will be in place yet again for most of the southern
plains, mainly south of Highway 50. Due to it being so dry in the
lower levels, it is likely that much of the precipitation falling
over the adjacent plains will be in the form of virga. This could
also enhance some of these gusty winds during the afternoon on
Tuesday.

Wednesday through Friday...

The unsettled pattern begins to weaken going into the later half of
the week as a general consensus of the models and ensemble members
reflect a filling (weakening) trough that will progress eastward as
the PFJ becomes more zonal in its wake. The ECMWF and GFS show that
there will be a cut-off low positioned over either California or
Arizona by early Friday. It is still too soon to tell, but this
could impact Colorado at a later time next weekend, past the
forecast period. Critical fire weather conditions also appear to
diminish each day past Wednesday, with a gradual warming trend under
much more tranquil conditions from Wednesday though Friday with
only some lingering snow showers over the higher elevations.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Gusty south to southwest winds and low relative humidity values are
once again expected today, with critical fire weather conditions
anticipated across much of south central and southeast Colorado from
late this morning through this evening.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday

Gusty southwest to west winds with low relative humidity will
produce critical fire weather conditions over portions of the
I-25 corridor during the afternoon and early evening on Sunday.
Snow will begin to move over the Continental Divide beginning
late Monday evening and continue to spread eastward on Tuesday,
with some of the snow showers making it over the I-25 corridor and
Palmer Divide. Light to moderate accumulations are expected, with
the heaviest snowfall amounts in the eastern San Juan Mountains,
with as much as six inches of new snow through Wednesday.

Critical fire weather concerns will still be an issue for much of
the plains during the afternoon on Monday and Tuesday, but then
begin to improve each day thereafter through the rest of the week.
There will be snow possible over portions of the higher terrain
and adjacent plains from Thursday through Friday.
