.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Tuesday)
Issued at 249 PM MDT Mon Mar 20 2023

Key Messages:

1) Heavy snow for the San Juans Now through this evening, then
tapering off a bit through mid morning tomorrow, then cranking up in
earnest tomorrow afternoon.

2)Winds start to crank up tomorrow afternoon over the higher terrain
south of US-50.

3) Warm again tomorrow.

Currently...

Rather impressive radar display over the southwestern CONUS as quite
a bit of showers were noted in the regional radar composite over
this region. Locally, the snow has begun over the CONTDVD per web
cams, obs and radar displays. East of the CONTDVD, it was rather
warm as the San Luis Valley (SLV) was in the mid 40s while the
plains were around 60F. Parts of the southern CWA was breezy as the
Wolf Creek, the southern SLV, La Veta pass and the gap flows in Huerfano
county were in the 20 to 30 mph range. RH values were relatively
high at this hour with min readings in the mid 20s.

Rest of Today into Tonight...

Main concern will be the CONTDVD region, especially the Wolf Creek
Pass. Based on latest guidance, the first wave is moving through now
and will drop some moderate to heavy snow over CPW through later
this evening. Then the snow is expected wane somewhat through the
early morning hours Tuesday. This same characteristic in the snow
accum fields will also occur over the remainder of the higher
terrain. I anticipate we will see 12 to 18" of snow fall over the
CPW region through midnight, with lesser amounts over the remainder
of the central and southern mtns.

As for temps, a mild night is anticipated with all of the clouds and
southerly flow. Temps over the plains will barely fall to around
freezing with 20s in the valleys. Mtns will also remain (relatively)
warm given the intensifying SW flow, with readings in the teens and
20s. Plains will stay relatively clear, minus the cirrus pushing
across.

Tomorrow

The main energy will take aim at the mtns starting late tomorrow
morning and will be in force tomorrow afternoon, as heavy snowfall
rates of 2 to 3" per hours will be possibe over the San Juans.
Other areas are expected to see modest accums, including the central
mtns, and parts of the Sangres, especially the southern sections of
the Northern Sangres, and the higher elevations of the southern
Sangre range. La Garitas, on the other hand, may not see much in the
way of heavy snow. The SLV, given the warm temps, will likely see
rain showers by tomorrow afternoon.

As mentioned in the KEY MESSAGES section, winds are going to start
to crank up over the higher elevations of the southern tier of the
fcst area. RH values will remain relatively high in the windier
areas, so fire weather issues should be minimal.

It will be another mild day over all of the region as southwesterly
flow increases. Expect 60s across a go part of the plains and U40s
valleys. Even the mtns will be in the 20s for high temps.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Monday)

Key Messages:

1) High impact storm to bring 1+ feet of snow to the mountains, with
the heaviest snow along the San Juan mountains.

2) Strong, and likely damaging winds, expected for much of southern
Colorado during the day Wednesday.

3) Critical fire weather concerns increase Wednesday afternoon given
dry and windy conditions.

4) Precipitation decrease in coverage and intensity Thursday, but
light snow still expected over the mountains and valleys.

5) Unsettled pattern continues into the weekend and start of next
week, with cooler temperatures and more chances for precipitation.

Wednesday:

Synopsis... A high impact storm system is expected to pass over the
southern Colorado region during the midweek period. Synoptically, a
large positively tilted trough is anticipated to push across the
region, which ensemble and deterministic model guidance are in
strong agreement on. Given the orientation of the trough, the strong
jet stream of the system is expected to be placed directly over
southern Colorado. These synoptic dynamics will also aid in the
development of a lee cyclone Wednesday afternoon across the plains.
In addition to the robust system kinematics, this trough will advect
a quality Pacific moisture plume across southern Colorado. Given
this system and its features, numerous high impact events are
expected, with feet of snow along the mountains, strong and damaging
winds, and fire weather concerns. Additional details about the
expected hazards are discussed below.

Precipitation... The trough passing over southern Colorado will
increase synoptic forcing over much of the area. Along with that,
the strong winds throughout the column will induce robust orographic
forcing along the mountains, particularly along the San Juan
mountains, which will have the greatest residence time with
favorable orographic forcing conditions. The strong synoptic and
orographic forcing, coupled with the Pacific moisture plume, will
allow for numerous to widespread pockets of moderate to heavy snow
along the mountains through the entirety of Wednesday. Most
mountains will see up to 1 foot of snow during this period. The
exception to this will be along the San Juan Mountains given the
better forcing, where snowfall rates of 2+ in/hr are expected and
ultimately 2-3 feet of snow are anticipated. If confidence remains
high for the heavy snowfall rates, along with expected strong winds,
a Blizzard Warning may be needed for the San Juan Mountains.
Dropping in elevation, the mountain valleys are also expected to
experience precipitation throughout Wednesday. Given the strong
synoptic support and deeper moisture, snow is anticipated to survive
being being off the higher terrain and across the mountain valleys,
where scattered to numerous light to moderate snow pockets are
expected throughout the day. Snow totals within the valleys is
anticipated to remain less than 3 inches given the lighter nature of
snowfall. Across the lowest elevations, the I25 corridor and eastern
plains, much drier conditions are expected. Despite the vigorous
synoptic support, strong downsloping westerly winds will mitigate
most of that forcing. This will lead to dry conditions across most
of the lower elevations throughout the day Wednesday.

Wind... This storm system is also expected to bring strong, and
likely damaging, winds to much of southern Colorado. At higher
elevations, given the robust jet stream overhead, winds across
mountains are expected to howl at 75-90 mph, with gusts to around
100 mph possible. The strongest mountain winds are expected over the
Sangre de Cristo Mountains, where the jet stream will become most
compact with the tightest pressure gradient. Given the strong winds,
and snow expected along the mountains, blowing snow is anticipated
at higher elevations. Across much of all the lower elevations, the
mountain valleys and I25 corridor and eastern plains, strong winds
are also expected. With strong winds throughout the column, diurnal
mixing is expected to push these stronger winds to the surface over
most of the valleys and lower elevations. In addition to that, a
deepening lee cyclone across the plains is anticipated to only
enhance strong wind potential across areas along and east of the I25
corridor. Winds across the valleys and lower elevations are expected
to be 60-70 mph, with gusts to around 80 mph possible. Also given
the strong winds, blowing dust is expected across parts of the
eastern plains, where conditions will be much drier and have plenty
of time to dry further into this day. With that all said though,
cloud cover may limit full mixing potential, and therefore,
strongest wind potential. Concern for this would be greatest across
the mountain valleys, where thickest cloud cover is expected.

Fire Weather... Fire weather conditions are also expected to be a
concern for parts of southern Colorado during the afternoon
Wednesday. The strong downsloping westerly winds will mix down drier
air throughout much of the day. This drying will drop humidity
values to around 15 percent across much of the I25 corridor and
eastern plains. While humidity values will be more on the marginal
spectrum for fire weather concerns, and even possibly slightly above
the threshold, the strong westerly winds over 60 mph through much of
the day, in combination with dry fuels, will easily over compensate
for the humidity values.

Temperatures... Wrapping up thoughts for Wednesday, a wide range of
temperatures are expected for southern Colorado. Areas west of the
I25 corridor are anticipated to be slightly below average. This is
due to increased and thick cloud cover that will persist through
much of the day. Areas along and east of the I25 corridor are
expected to hover area and above average. This is due to the strong
downsloping westerly winds bringing appreciable compressional
warming, and less cloud cover across the area.

Thursday: A downtick in active weather is expected for Thursday
after the busy day Wednesday. Ensemble model guidance are in good
agreement that the storm system from Wednesday will continue to trek
eastward and start exiting the southern Colorado region throughout
the day. As the system pushes east of the area, better synoptic and
orographic forcing will lessen across the region. Along with that,
moisture is expected to decrease behind the trough, as the Pacific
moisture plume is advected east. Given the drop in forcing and
moisture, snow along the mountains and over the mountain valleys is
anticipated to decrease in coverage and intensity. With that said
though, westerly winds will keep modest orographic forcing in place,
and modest moisture will also still be in place. Given that,
scattered to numerous pockets of light to moderate snow are expected
along the mountains, with isolated to scattered pockets of light
snow across the mountain valleys. As for lower elevations, dry
conditions are expected to continue, as the major synoptic forcing
leaves the area and downsloping westerly winds continue. With that
all said though, there is a possibility for isolated pockets of
light precipitation to develop along a cold front Thursday night.

Friday - Monday: For the time period around the weekend, active
weather continues for parts of southern Colorado. Ensemble model
guidance are in relatively good agreement about a pushing a long
wave trough across the region throughout Friday, with flow become
more zonal after that, with additional weak shortwaves. This pattern
will increase precipitation chances for much of southern Colorado.
The highest confidence in precipitation is expected along the
mountains, where forcing will be greatest. There is still
uncertainty in how precipitation ultimately evolves across the lower
elevations, as chances there will depend highly on how the long wave
trough and short waves within the more zonal flow evolve. Looking at
temperatures, a cooler stretch of day is anticipated for much of
southern Colorado. Given the modestly wavy pattern, cooler air is
expected to be reinforced throughout this timeframe, with
temperatures hovering around to slightly below average for this time
of year.

be possible at any time through the period, but the overall best
chance will be tomorrow afternoon. I expect quite a bit of MVFR
conditions will be possible tomorrow afternoon at KALS due to precip
and lower cigs. Most precip should be liquid given the warm temps
tomorrow. It will become rather windy at KALS tomorrow afternoon.

For KPUB and KCOS, winds will generally be from a southerly
component tomorrow afternoon.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Snow, heavy at times, will be possible today and tonight along the
Continental Divide and the peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
The San Juan Mountains will see the heaviest snowfall, with 1 to 2
feet of new snow possible through tonight, while the central
mountains as well as the peaks of the Sangres may receive 8 to 12
inches of new snow.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

Periods of moderate to heavy snow are expected along the
Continental Divide Tuesday through Thursday. Areas over the San
Juan Range will see the heaviest snowfall. The heaviest snowfall
is expected Tuesday night through much of Wednesday. Areas over
the San Juan Range could see 1 to 4 feet of snow with locally
higher amounts possible, with the Central Mountains and Sangre de
Cristo Range see 1 to 2 feet.

Very strong winds, blowing dust, and high fire danger are expected
Wednesday across the Plains. Southwest winds, gusting 50 to 60
mph, and possibly stronger, will combine with humidity values near
15 percent to produce the dangerous fire weather conditions. The
strong winds may also produce blowing dust, reducing visibility on
area highways. Strong cross winds are possible on north-south
oriented highways.

Light to moderate snow is expected over the Mountains Friday into
early next week. The best chances for snow along the Eastern
Mountains and southern Interstate 25 corridor could be Saturday
night.
