.SYNOPSIS...
Tranquil weather is expected through the weekend,
although cold early morning temperatures in the 30s are expected
for many of the lower desert communities, with some locations
dropping to near to below freezing. Another weather system will
affect the region Sunday night through Monday, bringing a round of
strong gusty winds across portions of southeast California and
southwest Arizona. Behind this system, a reinforcing shot of
colder air will result in the potential for more widespread early
morning freezing temperatures, including a large portion of the
Phoenix metro area, through the middle of next week.

.DISCUSSION...
Early morning water vapor satellite imagery depicts a potent upper-
level low pressure system moving through the high plains region with
the desert southwest situated on the backside with northerly flow
aloft. An anonymously cold air mass has settled into the region
behind this trough with mostly clear skies and thus early morning
low temperatures are expected to be in the 30s across many of the
lower desert locations, with some areas including portions of
Pinal County as well as near the extreme southern end of the
Phoenix suburbs dropping to near freezing. This is where Freeze
Warnings are in effect for early this morning as well as for early
Sunday morning. Across central La Paz County, even colder
temperatures into the upper 20s are possible and thus a Hard
Freeze Warning is in effect for the same time frame. Despite
abundant sunshine for the both today and Sunday, high temperatures
will struggle to reach 60 degrees across many of the lower desert
locations of south-central Arizona with lower 60s expected across
the western deserts. These forecast high temperatures will be a
good 7-10 degrees below normal for this time of the year.

Attention will then shift to another more potent upper-level low
expected to dive down from north/northwest into the region as we
head towards Sunday night through Monday. Ensembles have come into
very good agreement that the core of the system will move directly
over Arizona. Given the inland trajectory, this system once again
will be moisture starved and thus very little in the way of
precipitation is expected with NBM PoPs nearly zero across most of
the forecast area, with the exception across the higher terrain
of eastern Arizona where PoPs near 20% are indicated as orographic
lift may be enough to induce a few rain/snow showers. Otherwise,
the main impact with this system will be the potential for strong
gusty northerly winds along the vicinity of the Lower Colorado
River Valley, where strong 925 mb winds between 40-50 kts are
being indicated by the model guidance, thus resulting in wind
gusts approaching to possibly exceeding 40 mph at times near the
surface early Monday. With the strong gusty winds will also come
the potential for the generation of blowing dust. This system will
also usher in a reinforcing shot of colder air such that a
broader area of near to below freezing temperatures can be
expected for early Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, including this
time a large portion of the Phoenix metro area.

As we head towards the middle and latter half of next week, a
highly amplified ridge will develop across the northeast Pacific
with the ridge axis situated just offshore of the west coast.
Downstream of the ridge, a broad longwave trough will be situated
across the central and eastern CONUS, with the desert southwest
sandwiched in between these two features with dry northwesterly
flow aloft prevailing. Although temperatures will likely moderate
somewhat, readings will still remain below normal through the end
of next week.

.AVIATION...Updated at 1900z.

South-Central Arizona including KPHX, KIWA, KSDL, KDVT:
No aviation weather concerns through Sunday afternoon. Light,
diurnal winds and clear skies will prevail as high pressure
predominates across the southern Rockies.

Southeast California/Southwest Arizona including KIPL and KBLH:
Aside from some northerly gusts to 25 kt this afternoon at KBLH,
winds will generally remain under 10 kt tonight through Sunday
afternoon. Thereafter however, breezy conditions are expected to
develop Sunday evening as a strong low pressure system drops
southward into southern Nevada.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Below normal temperatures are expected through at least the next 7
days. Generally light winds are expected through the weekend. A
dry weather system will move through the region late Sunday
through Monday, delivering strong gusty northerly winds across the
the Lower Colorado River Valley region where gusts will likely
approach to possibly exceeding 40 mph at times early Monday. A
return to generally light winds is anticipated through the rest of
the week. MinRH values will range between 20-40% through the
weekend and drop between 15-30% through most of the upcoming week
with good overnight recoveries.
