.SYNOPSIS...
Dry conditions will continue through this weekend with above
normal temperatures continuing over the next couple of days. A
weather system moving into the region will bring increasing winds
and much cooler temperatures heading into this weekend with the
strongest winds seen on Saturday. Below normal temperatures
settle into the region by Sunday and continue into early next
week.

.DISCUSSION...
The above normal temperatures across the region will continue
today into Friday, but we will be under a modest cooling trend as
the influence from the subtropical high to our south begins to
wane. A large Pacific upper level trough still centered north of
the Pacific Northwest is starting to sag farther southward and is
now acting to push the upper level ridging that has been impacting
our region to our south. Tonight into Friday, a shortwave trough
is forecast to quickly dive southward within the base of the
large scale trough reaching the northern half of California by
Friday evening. The incoming trough will gradually lower heights
aloft across our region over the next couple days allowing for
some slight cooling across the region. By Friday, high
temperatures will dip below 100 degrees for most lower desert
areas, or closer to seasonal normals.
Winds will also begin to increase today, but more so on Friday
with afternoon gusts of 20-25 mph in many locations. Even stronger
winds are likely by Friday evening across the western half of
Imperial Co. with gusts of 30-40 mph possible. Going into
Saturday, the upper level trough will deepen across California
with the base of the trough bottoming out as far south as
southern California. This will create strong height falls across
much of the region on Saturday resulting in widespread windy
conditions. Peak wind gusts Saturday afternoon of 30-40 mph are
likely for a good portion of the area with locally higher gusts
across Imperial Co. and over higher terrain areas in Arizona.
These winds have a good possibility of creating some blowing dust
in the more dust prone areas of southeast California and Pinal Co.
Models are also now indicating a better defined cold front pushing
eastward across Arizona during the latter half of Saturday. This
could result in some light showers developing along and out head
of the front Saturday evening, but due to the limited moisture in
place any rain chances will remain across the Arizona high
country. Temperatures Saturday will also be noticeably cooler
across the western deserts with highs only topping out at around
90 degrees, whereas forecast highs for the Phoenix area are still
in the mid to upper 90s.
The trough will begin to lift northeastward Saturday night as it
enters a weakening phase, but very little progress will be made
through Sunday with the low center only shifting into Nevada. The
close proximity of the trough will keep winds elevated again on
Sunday, but afternoon wind gusts will drop off to a 20-30 mph
range. Sunday also looks to be the coolest day with highs ranging
from the lower 80s across southeast California to the mid to upper
80s in the Phoenix area. The cooler air mass will also briefly
drop overnight lows Sunday night into the 50s for more rural
desert areas to the low to mid 60s for much of the Phoenix area.
For early next week, our region will still be under the influence
of the slow moving upper level trough, but heights aloft will be
rising across the region. This will lead to a slow warming trend
through at least the first half of next week with forecast highs
closer to 90 degrees by Tuesday and likely into the lower 90s by
Wednesday. Model ensembles also somewhat favor a return to a
ridging pattern across the Western U.S. at some point later next
week which could push temperatures to slightly above normal, or
well into the mid 90s. Even if we do return to above normal
temperatures late next week, the probabilities of reaching 100
degrees are only at 5-10%.

South-Central Arizona including KPHX, KIWA, KSDL, and KDVT; and
Southeast California/Southwest Arizona including KIPL and KBLH:
No aviation weather concerns are anticipated during the forecast
period. Winds will follow diurnal patterns, with speeds remaining
generally aob 10 kts. A period of light southerly crosswinds is
expected early this afternoon before the typical west shift takes
hold across the Phoenix metro area by the mid-afternoon hours.
Otherwise, FEW to SCT mid and high level clouds through early this
afternoon will gradually clear out through the rest of the day.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Dry conditions will persist through the end of the week with
above normal high temperatures continuing through the next couple
of days. Afternoon Min RHs today and Friday will be in the 10-20%
range for most areas, while overnight Max RHs of 25-45% slowly
increase going into the weekend. Winds will increase over the next
several days with the strongest winds expected on Saturday. Gusts
Saturday upwards of 30-40 mph are likely in many areas with
locally higher gusts across Imperial County and the southern Gila
County high terrain. Strong winds combined with low RHs Saturday
will lead to elevated to possibly critical fire weather conditions
across south-central and eastern Arizona. Starting Sunday, winds
will begin diminishing day to day with winds returning to normal
by Tuesday.
