.SYNOPSIS...
A low pressure system will move through Arizona today, bringing
much cooler conditions and a chance of light rainfall. Windy
conditions are expected Tuesday ahead of a cold front that will
sweep through the area Tuesday night. This system will bring
another shot of precipitation for the central Arizona lower
deserts and light snow accumulations for the higher terrain east
of Phoenix. Well below normal temperatures are anticipated
Wednesday and Thursday morning followed by a gradual warming
trend.

.DISCUSSION...
Latest water vapor imagery reveals the center of the mid-
tropospheric low is centered near Mexicali. The low will continue
drifting eastward today and into south-central Arizona by early
afternoon. Conceptually, forcing for ascent is currently favorable
and this will continue through the early morning. However,
surface dewpoints are only in the mid 30s across southeastern
California and showers have struggled to develop. Latest runs of
the HRRR have picked up on this trend and suggest one main band of
light to moderate rain will develop shortly after sunrise, but
will mainly be focused across the foothills and higher terrain
east of Phoenix.

With the cold core sliding eastward today, temperatures aloft
will cool later this morning across south-central and southern
Arizona. Any breaks in the clouds will promote increased SBCAPE
and this is evident in some of the stronger HREF ensemble members.
Consequently, the character of the precipitation will become more
convective with the potential for spotty, but heavier showers and
possibly even a few rumbles of thunder. The strongest cells may
also be capable of producing small hail. The threat of
precipitation will shut off rather quickly during the mid-late
afternoon as a drier and more subsident air mass moves into
central Arizona behind the trough axis. Most likely precipitation
total is around two tenths of an inch for Phoenix, though it is
possible some spots in the Valley may receive nothing at all.
Meanwhile, conditions will be considerably cooler across Arizona
today with some spots as much as 20-25 degrees lower than
yesterday.

Fast on the heels of the departing trough will be another more
impressive closed low dropping southward out of the Great Basin
for Tuesday. ECMWF Ensemble EFI values remain quite elevated near
0.8 and have jumped higher, indicating the high likelihood of
widespread windy conditions. Latest NBM even suggests some of the
highest elevations such as in southern Gila County could approach
65 mph Tuesday evening and a High Wind Watch has been issued for
these areas. Elsewhere, there is generally a 60-90 percent chance
peak wind gusts will reach 40 mph, particularly across portions of
southern Maricopa County and Pinal County. Given the southwesterly
flow, winds of this magnitude will likely produce areas of
blowing dust and dangerous dust channels across I-10.

Latest models are in good agreement and indicate showers will
develop Tuesday afternoon and evening ahead of the cold front.
Earlier model runs suggested a slight chance of snow showers in
the lower deserts after midnight, however the latest runs indicate
lower chances with the cold air arriving closer to sunrise.
Nevertheless, wet bulb temperatures will be sufficient for a
changeover from rain to snow across the foothills north and east
of Phoenix generally above 2500 feet. Roughly a tenth to a quarter
of an inch of rain is likely in the Valley. Above 5000 feet in
elevation a few inches of snow are expected. For the Globe area,
one to two inches of snow is likely. Latest CAMs indicate the
precipitation will end shortly after midnight for most areas. In
the wake of this system, well below normal temperatures will
prevail across the Desert Southwest with high temperatures
struggling to even reach the mid 50s. Latest ECMWF ensemble even
suggests a trend towards lower mid-level heights, which is likely
a reflection of a reinforcing vort max across northern Arizona.

The lingering trough will maintain a relatively tight pressure
gradient, resulting in widespread breeziness and making it feel
even colder. Some of the coldest conditions of the season are
anticipated Wednesday night and Thursday morning across much of
Arizona. Latest deterministic NBM suggests a low temperature of 35
degrees at Sky Harbor, though this is colder than 75 percent of
the other ensemble members and likely reflects uncertainty in the
wind speed. Nevertheless, Freeze Warnings will likely be needed
for most if not all of the Phoenix area. In the outlying areas,
latest guidance suggests a Hard Freeze Warning may be needed.

Steady height rises will translate into a warming trend and a
return to near normal temperatures by Friday/Saturday. Thereafter,
forecast uncertainty increases dramatically and there are two
model clusters even suggesting another Pacific storm system could
provide an opportunity for precipitation Saturday night and
Sunday.

.AVIATION...Updated at 1810Z.

South-Central AZ including KPHX, KIWA, KSDL, KDVT, KGYR, KGEU:

Low CIGS will be the main aviation concern for the next several
hours. SCT-BKN 4-5k ft cloud bases will prevail through the
afternoon. Shower activity will persist over much of the region
this afternoon before ending around 00Z. Some brief periods of
MVFR conditions are possible with these showers, but probabilities
are too low to include in the TAF (<20%). Winds out of the S-SW
will shift back to the SE by this evening. Speeds will be
primarily <10kt. Winds may be erratic at times in association with
the aforementioned showers. Clouds will clear and lift slightly
with FEW-SCT 5-7k ft this evening and tonight.

Looking ahead to Tuesday, windy conditions and low CIGS will be
the main concerns. Gusts of 35kt are possible towards the end of
the current TAF period. There is a higher probability of MVFR CIGS
(40%) late Tuesday morning into the afternoon.

Southeast California/Southwest Arizona including KIPL and KBLH:

Light and variable winds at BLH through much of the day before
going S early this evening. Speeds will pick up in association
with the southerly shift with speeds 12-15kt beginning 03-04Z. At
IPL, NW winds this afternoon will decrease and go variable for
brief period before picking up around 04Z out of the W-SW with
gusts 20-25kt possible. Other than a few high clouds, skies will
be mainly clear tonight at both terminals.

.FIRE WEATHER...
A low pressure system will move through Arizona today, bringing
much cooler conditions and a chance of wetting rainfall. Very windy
conditions are expected Tuesday ahead of a cold front that will
sweep through the area Tuesday night. This system will bring
another chance of precipitation for the central Arizona lower
deserts and light snow accumulations for the higher terrain east
of Phoenix. In the wake of the front, winds will subside
Wednesday, though general breeziness will persist. Well below
normal temperatures are also expected Wednesday, followed by a
warming trend through the weekend. The next chance of
precipitation will be during the weekend as a storm system
strengthens in the eastern Pacific, however there is considerable
uncertainty with regard to impacts across the Desert Southwest.
