.SYNOPSIS...
Another cold night can be expected with clear skies and light
winds. A low pressure system will move through the region later
Sunday through Monday. This system will bring very strong winds to
southeast California and southwest Arizona. Precipitation chances
will be limited to south-central Arizona and primarily the higher
terrain. Snow levels may briefly dip below 2000 feet Monday
morning but with no accumulation. Snow accumulations above one
inch will be limited to elevations above 5000 feet. Even colder
mornings are anticipated Tuesday and Wednesday with all desert
locations in the 30s if not colder. A gradual warming trend is
anticipate during the latter half of next week.

.DISCUSSION...
After widespread 30s this morning on the lower deserts, early
afternoon temperatures are generally running in the 50s.
Anticipate another cold night tonight with clear skies and light
winds as the surface gradient weakens further. Thus, the
Freeze/Hard Freeze Warnings for portions of Pinal and La Paz
County remain in effect tonight/Sunday morning.
The next system to move through our forecast area is currently
centered near the Pacific Northwest coast. The system will dive
south-southeastward and deepen as upstream ridging amplifies. Of
note, the EPS solutions have trended a little deeper and further
west (closer to GEFS, GEPS). The associated cold front will move
southward through the Mohave Desert and Arizona Sunday afternoon
through Monday. The upper low center follows close behind with it
moving into New Mexico Monday night. The main thrust of the winds
will be over southeast CA and southwest AZ. Deterministic guidance
has 925mb and 850mb winds of 30-45kts Sunday night and Monday
depending upon the hour and location. The EPS based EFI has a
localized peak of 0.9 for the 00Z Mon - 00Z Tuesday time frame
with a larger area of 0.7-0.9. A Wind Advisory has been issued for
most of our southeast CA and southwest AZ zones from 02Z Mon -
00Z Tue.
With the overland trajectory, the system will struggle to produce
substantial precipitation amounts. However, with such a cold air
mass and some dynamical forcing, there is good model agreement on
light precip mainly for our higher terrain areas of south-central
AZ late Sunday night and Monday. Very light precip is even possible
over foothill areas of far northern Maricopa County. Freezing
levels are already fairly low and behind the front, they drop off
quickly with wet-bulb zero heights dropping below 1000 ft.
However, those areas are not likely to see precip. But, over
Greater Phoenix, those values dip below 2000ft Monday morning.
So, it wouldn't be entirely surprising to see some short lived
flurries over places near and north of the Carefree Highway,
Fountain Hills, and far northeast Mesa. In portions of our
forecast area more likely to see precip such as southern Gila
County, snow levels will be closer to 2500 ft. Accumulations of
more than one inch look to be limited to areas above 5000ft.
Even colder temperatures will be ushered in by this system than we
already have. After highs Sunday in the upper 50s to low 60s on
the lower deserts, Monday highs drop several degrees. In fact, for
Greater Phoenix, that will mean highs in the low 50s Monday.
The coldest mornings are shaping up to be on Tuesday and
Wednesday with all lower deserts in the 30s or even colder
(coldest lower deserts in the upper 20s). However, lingering
mixing overnight Monday could keep temperatures from bottoming out
quite as low as they might otherwise.
During the latter half of the week, temperatures slowly increase
as the northeast Pacific ridge expands inland. But, highs will
only get to the mid 60s to around 70 on Friday and Saturday as the
ridge axis stays offshore. This will allow one or two impulses to
move through the north/northwesterly flow but with little effect.
There are indications of precip potential late in the the weekend
as weak troughing undercuts the ridge and interacts with a wave
from the northwest. Too early to discern details.

South-Central Arizona including KPHX, KIWA, KSDL, KDVT:
No aviation weather concerns through Monday morning. Light winds
will prevail for forecast period starting out of the E before
veering to the N-NW by tomorrow evening. Expect FEW-SCT250 clouds
during the early afternoon hours, otherwise skies will be mainly
clear at all terminals.
Southeast California/Southwest Arizona including KIPL and KBLH:
Winds will generally be light tonight through Sunday afternoon
with periods of variability. At KIPL, west winds tonight will
begin to veer in the morning, eventually becoming more northerly
by tomorrow afternoon. Thereafter, breezy conditions are expected
to develop Sunday evening as a strong low pressure system drops
southward into southern Nevada. Expect clear skies for the
majority of the TAF period.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Below normal temperatures are expected through at least the next 7
days. Generally light winds are expected through the weekend. A
dry weather system will move through the region late Sunday
through Monday, delivering strong gusty northerly winds across the
the Lower Colorado River Valley region where gusts will likely
approach to possibly exceeding 40 mph at times early Monday. A
return to generally light winds is anticipated through the rest of
the week. MinRH values will range between 20-40% through the
weekend and drop between 15-30% through most of the upcoming week
with good overnight recoveries.
