Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 652 AM EST Sat Jan 21 2023 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure builds over the area before moving offshore tonight through Sunday. Low pressure then passes through the region late Sunday through Monday. High pressure briefly returns Tuesday through Tuesday night. Another area of low pressure affects the area Wednesday. High pressure returns to close out the week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... Mid-level troughing will continue to push offshore today giving way to some brief ridging ahead of the next system on Sunday. At the surface, broad and weak high pressure will build into the region through today the shift offshore tonight. A seasonable day is forecast. Temperatures will rise into the low to mid 40s south of I-78, and into the mid to upper 30s north of there. Northwest winds will prevail around 10-15 mph this morning, but should begin to diminish into the afternoon as the center of the high pressure draws nearer to the area. Stratocumulus was a bit more widespread in coverage overnight than originally forecast. The stratocumulus is forecast to increase in coverage this morning, with mostly cloudy skies expected northwest of I-95 and scattered clouds to the southeast. For tonight, the stratocumulus should begin to dissipate into the evening as high clouds begin streaming in ahead of the Sunday system. With lessening winds (light and variable to calm) and initially mostly clear skies, temperatures should drop off fairly quickly in the evening. Overnight lows should generally be achieved by around midnight or so, then then should remain steady or increase slightly from there. Low temperatures should be mainly in the mid to upper 20s. No precipitation is expected tonight. && .SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/... High pressure will be over the western Atlantic ocean well east of New Jersey and just outside the 40/70 benchmark Sunday morning, and will continue to drift out to sea during the day. Meanwhile, a positively tilted H5 trough with the base of the trough extending down into the Gulf Coast states approaches from the west. Surface low pressure will develop and intensify over the Southeast on Sunday. As the low lifts into the Mid-Atlantic, precipitation will develop during the day, first over Delmarva by midday, then spreading towards the southern Poconos and northern New Jersey by late afternoon. Precipitation will spread over the area by Sunday evening and will continue through Sunday night. In terms of ptype, although a quick shot of wintry mix is possible initially in Delmarva, temperatures warm up quickly, and precip will overall be plain rain. By the time precip spreads into New Jersey and southeast Pennsylvania, temperatures will be warm enough to support plain rain. The only difference will be the southern Poconos, far northwest New Jersey, and even down into the Lehigh Valley. Since it will take some time for the moisture to catch up, there should be some wet bulbing that allows for a period of snow in the southern Poconos. Going into Sunday evening, temperatures will struggle to rise above freezing, and a prolonged period of snow will continue int the southern Poconos, while a wintry mix is possible down to the Fall Line. Temperatures should warm up enough to allow precip to change to plain rain after midnight as low pressure moves off the New Jersey shore and passes south of New York City and tracks towards eastern Long Island by Monday morning. Behind the low, winds shift to the northwest, and cold air advection will be underway for Monday morning. A brief period of wintry mix is possible once again down to the Fall Line before tapering off Monday afternoon. Conditions will be dry Monday night. 2 to 4 inches of snow will be possible in Carbon and Monroe counties, mainly in the higher elevations. Otherwise, minimal snow accumulation. Highs Sunday and Monday will generally top off in the low to mid 40s, though highs on Monday will occur early in the day. Lows Sunday night will generally be in the upper 20s in the southern Poconos, and otherwise in the low to mid 30s. Lows Monday night drop back into the 20s. && .LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... Brief high pressure returns on Tuesday, followed by another storm in the middle of the week. Conditions will be dry and mild with slightly above normal temperatures with highs in the low to mid 40s. High pressure departs Tuesday night. Low pressure develops over the Southern Plains and western Gulf Coast states as a closed H5 low and longwave H5 trough ejects from the Rocky Mountains. Following a similar track as has occurred this season, the storm will lift towards the Ohio Valley before lifting to the northeast and departing. Meanwhile, a secondary low looks to form over the Mid-Atlantic and will lift along New Jersey Wednesday night before departing on Thursday. There will be two areas of high pressure near the area when precip starts Wednesday morning. The first will be off the Mid- Atlantic and Northeast coast, and another over eastern Canada. There may be just enough cold air locked in place at the surface to allow for some snow initially, if not a wintry mix, Wednesday morning throughout. by late Wednesday morning, precip should chance to plain rain south and east of the Fall Line, yet a more prolonged period of snow is possible in the southern Poconos, northwest New Jersey, and the Lehigh Valley. Precip should change to all rain for all but portions of Carbon and Monroe counties, where snow may continue until the storm departs by Thursday morning. A strong northwest flow develops for Thursday as high pressure builds in from the west, and then winds lighten going into Friday. Conditions will be dry for the end of the week as high pressure approaches. However, there may be some Lake Effect streamers that could affect the southern Poconos. && .AVIATION /12Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... THE FOLLOWING DISCUSSION IS FOR KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY AND SURROUNDING AREAS. Today...BKN to OVC ceilings are expected to remain VFR with cloud bases from 3.5 to 5 kft. Cloud cover should generally be more SCT in nature southeast of I-95. Northwest winds around 10 kts early will diminish to around 5 kts later in the afternoon. Some gusts near 18-20 kts possible early, mainly before 18Z. High confidence. Tonight...VFR with scattered cirrus increasing in coverage overnight. Winds light and variable to calm, but should eventually settle out of the south less than 5 kts. High confidence. Outlook... Sunday through Sunday night...VFR initially, then sub-VFR, mostly in RA.
