.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will build into the area overnight bringing fair
weather and seasonable temperatures through Thursday. An Arctic
cold front will push through the area early Friday with
blustery and very cold conditions through Saturday as strong
high pressure builds across the region. The high pressure will
retreat offshore by Saturday night resulting in moderating
temperatures to above normal values into early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Surface high pressure centered in the Ohio River Valley will
slide east overnight, and then will expand over the Mid-Atlantic
on Thursday. Some strong shortwave energy will pass through the
region through Thursday.
In terms of sensible weather, conditions will be quiet. A
scattered to broken deck of high clouds will overspread the
region overnight. We adjusted low temperatures down several
degrees over northern portions of our area, particularly toward
the Poconos, as well as around the NJ pine barrens, where good
radiational cooling conditions have allowed temperatures to
already drop through the 20s. There are even some low teens in
parts of Carbon and Monroe County past midnight. While high
clouds are streaming in from the west, and we have expected that
these would limit radiational cooling overnight, those clouds
are thinner farther north across Pennsylvania. Farther south,
especially toward Delaware and Maryland, temperatures may bottom
out in the next hour or two and then actually rebound through
morning as clouds thicken.
Those clouds will persist through the morning at least over the
southern half of our region, as an upper-level trough passes by
aloft, and a weak surface low shifts eastward off the North
Carolina coast. Drier air aloft with clearing skies will then
build in for the rest of Thursday.
Highs on Thursday will be in the upper 30s to low 40s, which
are at or just a shade below normal for this time of the year.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Most ensemble members indicate the coastal low will be off the
coast by late Thursday night with little to no precipitation
chances for our area. The only exception will be across the
southern Poconos late Thursday night, when attention turns to
the blast of Arctic air expected for Friday into Saturday. The
front will likely pass as a dry boundary aside from some light
lake effect snow showers potentially reaching into the Poconos,
aided by a bit of instability provided by a short wave trough in
the 700 to 850 mb layer. However, a very dry atmosphere will
likely preclude any precipitation any further south. Otherwise,
it'll be a dry night with temperatures mostly in the 20s under
mostly cloudy skies.
A potent cold front marking the leading edge of a very cold
Arctic air mass will approach from the northwest late Thursday
night into early Friday morning. Both the deterministic and
ensemble suites continue to indicate bitterly cold conditions
Friday night into Saturday morning especially. This may rival
the cold we had the week before Christmas in terms of intensity,
though the good news is it will not be as prolonged with
temperatures already looking to moderate back to normal by
Sunday.
At the mid-levels, anomalously low 500 mb heights (<500 dam
across New England) will spread south as 850 mb temperatures are
progged to drop into the -15C to -20C range. The result will be
high temperatures in the upper 20s and 30s on Friday occurring
in the predawn hours, then temps will fall through the day into
the teens by afternoon and single digits by evening. Low
temperatures Friday night have increased slightly with this
update, but should still be near 0 degrees in the southern
Poconos and northwest New Jersey; positive single digits most
everywhere else and near 10 degrees in the I-95 urban corridor,
and across Delmarva.
Behind the front, winds are expected to be blustery with a
tight pressure gradient between a strengthening low near Nova
Scotia and strengthening high across the Great Lakes. Cold
northwesterly wind between 15-25 mph with gusts 30-40 mph is
possible, and combined with the very cold temperatures, the
result will be dangerous wind chill values possibly nearing -20
to -25F in the Poconos/NW NJ and
-5 to -15F across the rest of the area overnight Friday night and
Saturday morning. Wind Chill headlines will likely be needed, at
least for areas near and north of I-78, once we get a little better
idea as to the extent of the coldest wind chills.
High pressure will slide overhead into the day on Saturday,
relieving the northwesterly flow and backing winds to the
southwest which will usher in much milder air. Saturday will be
dry as the high is situated overhead and highs only look to
reach into the 20s with wind chills remaining in the 10s.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Fortunately, the bone-chilling cold will be short-lived as high
pressure moves off the coast Saturday night, allowing winds to
back to south-southwest flow. This will be the beginning of
moderating temperatures over the next several days as warm air
advection surges northward. Compared to Friday night and
Saturday, temperatures Saturday night will be nearly 10-15
degrees warmer than Friday night and with high pressure
remaining in control through Sunday, highs should reach mid to
upper 40s with even a few 50 degree readings not out of question
especially across S NJ and DE.
By Sunday night, an upper level trough swings into the region
through Monday. Deterministic guidance has been keen on
developing a coastal low while keeping the track of the low well
offshore. This will keep most if not all of the area dry,
however numerous of ensemble members do bring a chance of rain
showers to our coastal locales. For now this seems far-fetched,
so have held off on including any PoPs in the forecast. Thus,
expect the area to remain dry with weak frontal passage Monday
morning.
High pressure will quickly build in its wake across the SE US
into Tuesday with a warming trend continuing. The next chance of
precipitation does not seem to occur until Wednesday with low
approaching from west. With temps gradually increasing into the
50s to near 60 degrees mid-week, those looking for any wintry
weather will have to wait a little bit longer.

with gale force wind gusts around 35 kts possible. Northwest
winds 20-25 kts with gusts around 30-35 kts. Seas building to
3-6 feet. Freezing spray is likely beginning Friday afternoon,

Saturday...Small Craft Advisory conditions likely early in the
day. Northerly winds subsiding to around 10-15 kts into the
