.SYNOPSIS...
Weak low pressure off the Middle Atlantic Coast will continue
to drift northeastward and away from our area through today.
High pressure should follow from the west for Wednesday. The
high will merge with a larger high over the western North
Atlantic. Persistent southwest flow will result in hot and humid
conditions through the end of the week. A cold front is
expected to cross the area from the northwest sometime Saturday,
which will bring increasing chances for showers and storms, as
well as relief from the heat by Sunday. Cooler high pressure
will settle across the northeast into early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 12:30PM...Shower and thunderstorm activity has begun to fire
across our more western areas mainly northwest of I-95. PoPs in the
forecast have been increased for the next few hours. A convective
watch has been issued for our entire CWA and is effect until 8PM.

Robust mid level shortwave energy to the west will continue to
migrate to the east with time and a shortwave axis is forecast to
pass overhead this evening. Approaching short wave energy and the
increasing moisture in the southerly flow will result in the
development of showers and thunderstorms for this afternoon into
this evening. Mixed layer CAPE values in the 1500 to 2500 J/kg range
should provide an environment conducive for organized convection,
producing strong wind gusts and hail. In addition, precipitable
water values are forecast to approach 2 inches, especially from the
I-95 Corridor southeastward. Locally heavy rain may occur. WPC has
much our of region in a slight risk for excessive rainfall.

Once mid level shortwave energy passes to our east, the potential
for precipitation is expected to decrease quickly overnight. Some
patchy low clouds and fog are possible, again mainly where heavy
rainfall occurs.

Today's maximum temperatures are expected to favor the middle and
upper 80s. Tonight's lows should be mostly in the 60s.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Flat upper ridging will briefly build through the day on
Wednesday and weak surface high pressure is expected to extend
along the central and southern Appalachians. The combination
will result in a dry day on Wednesday with subsidence noted in
forecast soundings. The high will drift eastward on Wednesday
afternoon and Wednesday night, merging with a larger high
located over the western North Atlantic. Wednesday is forecast
to be mostly sunny with maximum temperatures in the upper 80s
and lower 90s. Wednesday night's lows will be a few degrees
above average in the upper 60s to the middle 70s as humidity
levels continue to increase overnight.

The persistent mid level long wave trough that has been
protecting us from excessively hot temperatures is expected to
lift for the end of the week. The flow across the northern
states should become somewhat zonal and a ridge over the western
North Atlantic is forecast to retrograde a bit. Meanwhile, a
surface high off the coast will establish a south to
southwesterly flow of hot and humid air into our region.

We are anticipating a buildup of heat and humidity beginning on
Thursday when our first excessive heat headlines of the year
are looking increasingly likely. Warm, moist advection will
ensue on Thursday under southerly flow through much of the
column. 850 temps are progged to reach 18-20C which will support
highs in the low to mid 90s. Dewpoints will rise into the low
to mid 70s and this will result in heat index values reaching
the upper 90s to low 100s in the afternoon. There will be a
persistent south to southwest breeze around 10-15 mph through
the day, with gusts perhaps as high as 25 mph. Some shortwave
energy will slide through aloft, mainly focused to our north and
west, where we will carry 20-30% PoPs with peak heating aiding
in scattered shower and thunderstorm development. Some
additional development of storms is possible farther south into
the evening, however confidence is lower on this.

A southwest wind around 10 mph will persist Thursday night,
which will keep low temperatures elevated in the mid to upper
70s south of I-78. This will not offer any relief from the heat
overnight.

The heat will continue into Friday as this will likely be the
hottest day of the week (potentially of the year). The
continuing southwesterly flow will maintain warm, moist air
through the day on Friday. 850 temps will reach around 20-22C
and latest NBM probs indicate a ~90-95% chance of temperatures
exceeding 90 degrees. The probability of exceeding 100 degrees
is very low though. The past few runs of the GFS and Euro
ensembles also support this trend. We have maintained the
forecast for widespread high temperatures in the mid 90s. With
dewpoints continuing in the low to mid 70s, heat index values of
up to 100-105 degrees are anticipated. The one question for
Friday will be how much the dewpoints mix out. Taking a look at
the latest GFS forecast soundings, deep boundary layer mixing is
suggested. This would mean dewpoints perhaps mixing out into
the upper 60s, but temperatures would be a couple degrees warmer
as a result. Resulting heat index values would still be in the
100-105 degree range though. Something we will have to monitor.
Southwest winds will once again be near 10-15 mph with gusts of
20 mph possible. Some isolated thunderstorms are possible north
of I-78, though most areas will remain dry under mostly sunny
skies.

For Friday night, the southwest winds will continue around 10
mph, keeping the temperatures elevated in the mid to upper 70s
south of I-78. This will make for a second consecutive night
with little relief from the daytime heat.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
A cold front is expected to arrive from the northwest sometime
on Saturday, resulting in an increase in the potential for
afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. The timing of
the arrival of the cold front to our region is still uncertain,
however the latest trend in the guidance is for a slower arrival
of the front. This would translate to a third day of hot and
humid conditions. We have stuck closely with the NBM for
temperatures, which have increased due to the slower trend of
the front. With increasing cloud cover and increasing chances
for convection into the afternoon, temperatures are likely to be
at least a few degrees cooler than Friday (highs in the low to
mid 90s), but it'll still be hot and humid. If the slower trend
comes to fruition, we'll be looking at heat index values ranging
from the mid 90s to low 100s across much of the area.

Given the synoptic setup, we'll have to keep a close eye on the
severe thunderstorm potential for Saturday as well. A cold
front crossing the region on the heels of a heat wave can often
spell trouble, as we'll have plenty of instability and shear to
work with. We have maintained a chance of thunderstorms in the
forecast for now.

We should finally start to cool off starting Saturday night in
the wake of the cold front with temperatures and dewpoints
falling back to more seasonable values. We'll really start to
enjoy some relief by Sunday and into Monday, with highs in the
low to mid 80s and dewpoints mixing out into the low 60s to
perhaps even the upper 50s (below normal!). Lows will also fall
below normal with values ranging from the upper 50s to mid 60s
into early next week. We'll keep and chance of showers and
storms in the forecast for Sunday, as some lingering instability
behind the front could result in some scattered diurnal
convection.

.AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Today...VFR with scattered clouds in the mid to late morning.
Mainly VFR in the afternoon. Scattered showers and thunderstorms
are expected to develop, briefly reducing conditions to MVFR or
IFR. The thunderstorms could bring heavy rain, strong wind
gusts, hail and frequent lightning. South to southwest wind 5 to
10 knots. Medium confidence.

Tonight...Scattered showers and thunderstorms ending in the
evening. Otherwise, it should be mainly VFR. Localized ceiling
and visibility restrictions are possible overnight due to the
potential for some patchy low clouds and fog. Variable wind 5
knots or less. Medium confidence.

Outlook...

Wednesday...VFR. South to southwesterly wind 5-10 knots. High
confidence.

Thursday...Primarily VFR. A few scattered showers and
thunderstorms in the afternoon. South to southwesterly wind
10-15 knots with gusts to 20 kts. Moderate confidence.

Friday...Primarily VFR. A few isolated showers and
thunderstorms in the afternoon. Southwesterly wind 10-15 knots
with gusts to 20 knots. Moderate confidence.

Saturday...Primarily VFR. A few scattered showers and
thunderstorms with the passage of cold front. Southwest to
westerly wind 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots. Moderate
confidence.

 afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms are anticipated to pass
 off the coast this evening. They may bring locally heavy rain,

expected to become southwest to west tonight, decreasing to 5
to 10 knots. Waves on our ocean waters should be around 2 feet,
with waves on Delaware Bay at 2 feet or less.

Outlook...

Wednesday...No marine headlines expected. Southerly wind 10-15
knots. Seas around 2 feet.

Thursday...A brief period of SCA conditions possible in the
afternoon with southerly wind 15-20 knots and gusts up to 25
knots. Seas 3-5 feet.

Friday...SCA conditions possible with southerly sustained winds
of 15-20 knots with gusts up to 25 knots. Seas 3-5 feet.

Saturday...SCA conditions possible with southerly sustained
winds of 10-15 knots with gusts up to 25 knots. Scattered
thunderstorms possible. Seas 3-5 feet.

Rip Currents...

Surf zone conditions are forecast to be similar for today and
Wednesday. A light and variable wind in the morning should
become south around 10 knots in the afternoon both days.
Breaking waves are expected to be only around 1 foot with a
medium period east to southeast swell. There is a LOW risk for
rip currents along the coasts of Delaware and New Jersey for
today and Wednesday.
