Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 1032 AM EDT Tue Jul 18 2023 .SYNOPSIS... A weak cold front approaches the area late today and then stalls near the area tonight into Wednesday. This front pushes back to the north as a warm front Thursday before a stronger cold front moves through Friday. This front pushes off the coast over the weekend with high pressure building in from the west. The next system approaches from the west early next week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... Latest analysis shows a surface cold front aligned northeast- southwest across Lakes Erie and Ontario, extending northeast toward Montreal and southwest toward St. Louis. Surface high pressure sits to our southeast over the western Atlantic, while another high sis over the Corn Belt behind the cold front. Aloft, a ridge dominates the western Atlantic with a large trough over the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley, leading to a closed low near James Bay. Convection has formed late this morning on a trough that runs north-south along the Delaware Valley. As we progress into the afternoon, the focus of storms looks to focus in the Delaware Valley and New Jersey. With PW's approaching 2 inches, heavy downpours will be a concern, along with isolated severe weather. Tonight, the day-time activity likely wanes in the evening as SBCAPE drops off as the sun sets. We may see some patchy fog, though clouds look more likely to dominate. However, some models are now suggesting a redevelopment of showers if not thunderstorms as well after midnight as another shortwave approaches and we enter the left exit region of another jet streak. Didn't boost pops much yet, but it'll be on our radar. Lows will remain mild, upper 60s and low 70s overall. && .SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/... The overall unsettled pattern we've been in looks to continue through the short term. To begin the period Wednesday, a weak and and diffuse front will be draped across the region and this combined with daytime heating and seabreezes looks to trigger more scattered showers and thunderstorms. It's possible there could even be a couple rounds coming through with an initial round in the morning associated with an upper level disturbance coming through followed by additional scattered convection in the afternoon. Confidence on these details is low, however. At this point the chances for widespread severe weather and/or flooding appear to be low. Highest chances for precip look to be near and south of the I-95 corridor. Otherwise it will be another very warm and humid day but likely just a bit cooler than Tuesday as there should be a bit more cloud cover around. The general trend should be for convection to diminish Wednesday evening into the overnight due to the loss of heating but still can't rule out a few isolated storms around. Lows range from the 60s over most of eastern PA and interior NJ to around 70 over the urban corridor and most of Delmarva. For Thursday, the day should begin mainly dry with chances for showers and storms starting to ramp up beginning in the afternoon as the next more organized system approaches from the west. This means showers/storms should initiate over central and western PA before starting to move into our eastern PA zones by mid to late afternoon. However the best chances for more organized and widespread showers/storms looks to come through Thursday night as a low pressure system tracks across southern Ontario helping to push a cold front into the region. In fact the deep layer forcing could be fairly strong with an upper level wave taking on a neutral to negative tilt as it moves through and SE PA becoming situated near a left jet exit region. Limiting factor for severe weather may be timing being mainly at night with marginal deep layer shear values around 30 knots. Still, think there is at least some potential for severe storms along with flooding/flash flooding threat as PWATs will be around 1.8 to 2.0 inches or so. It remains very warm and humid with highs Thursday mainly in the 80s to around 90 and lows Thursday night mainly in the 60s to around 70. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... A slow moving cold front will be moving through the area during the day Friday and this will keep a good chance for showers and thunderstorms in the forecast. Biggest threat looks to be heavy rain creating the potential for flooding and/or flash flooding. The good news is that heading into the weekend the front should start to clear the area to the east and this means the weekend should be mainly dry and also cooler and less humid. It is worth noting though that some of the guidance has trended a bit slower moving the front off the coast and if this trend were to continue it could result in some showers continuing into Saturday. For now though, we keep showers out of the forecast except for the mention of slight chances over portions of NE PA and northern NJ. Sunday should feature partly to mostly sunny skies with seasonable temperatures and relatively comfortable humidity levels to finish out the weekend. Beyond this time, chances for showers and storms start to increase once again through early next week as the next system approaches. && .AVIATION /14Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas... Today...Patchy fog/low stratus may result in intervals of MVFR conditions this morning, perhaps even briefly IFR, but expect VFR for the bulk of the day. Main concern this afternoon will be scattered showers/t-storms with MVFR or brief IFR conditions possible. Uncertainty about best risk of storms but odds look lowest at KACY where sea breeze may keep them at bay. Winds south to southwest 5-10 kts. Moderate confidence. Tonight...Any early shower-storm activity wanes for a while, though there is a small chance it reignites overnight. Otherwise, mainly VFR. Winds south to west 5-10 kts or less. Moderate confidence. Outlook... Wednesday...Chance for a few scattered showers and storms, mainly near and south of PHL/PNE. Otherwise VFR. Northwest to west winds around 5 to 10 knots except winds becoming southerly at ACY. Moderate confidence. Thursday and Friday...A cold front may move through with a period of more widespread showers and thunderstorms...highest chances look to be late day Thursday through early afternoon Friday. VFR with times of MVFR and IFR around showers/thunderstorms. SE-S winds of 5-10kts, shifting to more westerly behind the front by late day Friday. Moderate confidence. Saturday...VFR. Northwest winds around 10 knots. Moderate confidence. && .MARINE... Sub-advisory conditions through tonight with seas 2-4 ft and winds south to southwest 10-15 kts. Main concern will be potential for patchy fog this morning and scattered t-storm potential this afternoon/evening. Outlook... No marine headlines expected. Winds generally around 10 knots with seas of 2 to 4 feet. Scattered showers and thunderstorms possible (20-40% chance) mainly in the afternoon and evening periods Wednesday through Friday. Rip Currents... A southerly wind increasing to around 10 MPH is anticipated for today with breaking waves around 2 to 3 feet and a medium period east to southeast swell. An underlying long period east to southeast swell will likely be present, resulting in a MODERATE risk for the development of dangerous rip currents along the coasts of Delaware and New Jersey. A light northwest to west wind on Wednesday morning is forecast to become southerly around 10 MPH in the afternoon. Breaking waves should be 1 to 2 feet with a medium period east to southeast swell. There should still be an underlying long period swell from the east and southeast.
