.SYNOPSIS...
An overall unsettled weather pattern will persist through next week.
The closed low over the Southeast lifts north and devolves into a
trough that slowly drifts across the Mid Atlantic region through the
weekend. Another area of low pressure slowly moves in from the
northwest on Monday, slowly dropping a cold front through our region
Tuesday into Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Forecast on track this afternoon. Have made a few minor
adjustments to the forecast. Looking at 12z observed soundings,
ACARS soundings from KPHL, and model guidance, we have become a
bit more concerned about the severe potential today. Soundings
show a good amount of veering with height, especially in the
low-levels. Combined with 1000-1500 J/kg of MLCAPE, and
moderate forcing, there certainly is a threat for a few strong
to severe thunderstorms. The main hazard will be gusty winds,
but cannot rule out the possibility of a tornado, especially
with slightly rightward hodographs showing up in the soundings.
SPC has added a Marginal Risk basically from Philadelphia on
south.

In addition to the severe threat, there will be the potential
for flash flooding. PWAT values are around 1.9-2.0 inches across
most of the area. Incoming downpours will certainly pack a
punch and have the capability to produce rates anywhere from 1
to 3 inches per hour. Main concerns are within the urban
corridor, but will wait to see where the heaviest axis of
precipitation sets up.

Previous full discussion follows...

After a relatively dry day on Thursday for most of our area, we will
see an increase in shower activity through this afternoon, along
with some scattered thunderstorms. An upper-level low that has been
'cut off' from the main jet stream flow is finally beginning to lift
northward across the Ohio Valley toward the lower Great Lakes today
into tonight.

A shortwave rotating around that upper-low will focus surface low
pressure development closer to the Appalachians, and along with a
warm front lifting northward across our region today, will help
switch winds from easterly to southerly. Overnight and into this
morning, temperatures and dewpoints have been lower than
forecast, generally in the low 60s, but dewpoints in the mid to
upper 60s over southern Maryland and Virginia will finally push
northward later this morning into this afternoon. The warmer,
more humid airmass will support high temperatures finally rising
closer back to normal levels for late June, with upper 70s to
low 80s for most spots. Greater instability will result, with
CAPE values in the 1000-1500 j/kg range, particularly from
around Trenton southwestward. Bulk shear values do not look
impressive; perhaps around 20 kt. There is some indication that
low-level veering as the warm front lifts northward may locally
enhance low-level shear around northern Delaware perhaps up to
around Philadelphia during the late morning and early afternoon
hours. This does not look like an environment very supportive of
severe thunderstorms, and SPC does not have us in a marginal
risk, with overall wind fields pretty weak. Would not completely
rule out an isolated stronger storm or two, though.

The greater potential impact with heavier showers and thunderstorms
today will be heavy rain, particularly in any urban areas and/or
where storms train over the same location. However, storm motion
should be 15 to 20 kt; perhaps enough to keep the heaviest rain
rates from persisting in any one area otherwise, and limit flash
flooding concerns. Thus far early this morning shower activity
has been very slow to move in, just beginning to increase in
coverage across southeast PA and Delaware. So far, only some
1/4-inch per hour rates have been observed with showers lifting
out of eastern Maryland. Models generally agree that coverage
will gradually increase from around Philadelphia and Trenton
west and southwestward this morning, and expand across the rest
of the area this afternoon, with the greatest threat for more
persistent, heavier showers and thunderstorms along and west of
I-95.

Heading into tonight, instability will decrease with the loss of
daytime heating, but showers and thunderstorms may persist past
sunset as the aforementioned shortwave approaches. As that passes
through, activity will wane toward midnight, with reduced coverage
and intensity. It will be a muggy night, with lows only falling into
the upper 60s to near 70.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
The weekend looks wet overall, but perhaps trending slightly drier .
Overall synoptic pattern will continue to progress slowly, with a
trough inching towards the East Coast. Latest global guidance has
shifted the area of best positive vorticity advection to the north
and east as our cut off low transitions into an open wave, providing
less synoptic forcing both Saturday and Sunday. With that said, we
should still anticipate shower and thunderstorm development this
weekend.

The best chance for showers and thunderstorms remains during
Saturday afternoon and evening. Severe weather threats look minimal
due to lack of shear overall, but slow storm motion vectors indicate
the potential for localized flooding especially in poor drainage
areas. Antecedent conditions will be determined by what happens with
tomorrow's system, but even though most of the area is in a
precipitation deficit, there could still be some hydro issues.
Shower and thunderstorm activity wanes into the evening with the
loss of daytime heating, and the latter part of Saturday Night looks
dry for most. Highs on Saturday will get into the low to mid 80s
with overnight lows Saturday night getting down into the mid to
upper 60s.

Sunday remains the drier day of the weekend, though still expecting
some pop-up showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Best chance
to see any convection will be north and west of Philadelphia, but
generally expecting more scattered activity compared to Saturday.
Temperatures will climb into the mid 80s. Sunday Night looks more on
the quiet side now as the trough that brought active weather for the
weekend finally moves out. The reprieve looks to be brief though as
the region will be in middle of two systems during that timeframe.
Still cannot rule out a lingering shower for the first part of the
night, but most will stay dry overnight. Looks to be a partly to
mostly cloudy and muggy night with overnight lows in the mid to
upper 60s and some spots staying at/above 70.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
In the wake of our departing weekend trough, a more amplified trough
will be digging through the Great Lakes, potentially taking on a
negative tilt as it gets to our region. An area of low pressure will
slide by to the northwest, dropping a cold front through our region.
Monday more than any day in the extended looks to have some severe
weather potential due to strong forcing and sufficient instability.
Still a long way out, though, with wide differences in expected
shear values and timing remaining among guidance. Monday also looks
to be the warmest day with temperatures getting into the mid to
upper 80s with the potential for some spots to hit the 90 mark.

Beyond Monday, there is some signal that the trough could slow down
as it reaches the East Coast. This results in the associated area of
low pressure slowly sliding by to the north, and a series of fronts
passing through our region. Tuesday is now likely to be another wet
and active day with showers and thunderstorms developing as a
secondary cold front moves through. Forcing and dynamics look less
impressive Tuesday compared to Monday for severe weather, however
still expecting rather widespread showers and thunderstorms through
the day. Showers chances are likely to persist through Wednesday as
the trough remains draped over the US. Some of the guidance tries to
dry things out towards the end of next week, but confidence is low
on the exact time the trough finally moves off the Eastern Seaboard.
While temperatures on Monday will be around normal, the below normal
trend will return Tuesday-Thursday, with upper 70s/low 80s
anticipated.

.AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Rest of Today...A warm front lifting north will gradually
increase conditions briefly before scattered showers and
thunderstorms move in. As of 18z, the warm front is right around
KPHL/KPNE and we have seen conditions turn VFR at KMIV/KACY
where the front has passed. Confidence remains low on how
quickly the front moves north. Otherwise, for this afternoon,
periods of showers and thunderstorms will move through later
this afternoon, reducing visibility down to as low as 1SM.
Timing remains between 20z-00z which looks about right based on
recent radar trends. Winds will gradually veer as the afternoon
goes on, going from easterly to a more south/southeast
direction, still around 5-10 kt with the exception of KACY/KMIV,
where some gusts in the mid to upper teens are possible.

Tonight...A mix of IFR/LIFR conditions are expected in the wake
of the front with some scattered light showers for most of the
night. Confidence remains low on timing and extent of
restrictions though. Winds will generally be out of the south
around 5 kt or less, though some spots will likely go light and
variable. Low confidence.

Outlook...

Saturday through Saturday Night...Sub-VFR conditions likely with
scattered showers and thunderstorms. SSW winds around 5-10 kt.
Moderate confidence.

Sunday through Sunday Night...Primarily VFR though brief
restrictions possible with any showers/thunderstorms in the
afternoon. Storms expected to subside Sunday night. SW winds around
5-10 kt during the day turn S to SSE at night. Moderate
confidence.

Monday through Monday Night...Likely VFR to start, but afternoon and
evening showers and thunderstorms will potentially result in
restrictions. Southerly winds around 10-15 kt during the day will
decrease to around 5-10 kt overnight. Moderate confidence.

Tuesday through Tuesday Night...Sub-VFR conditions likely with
periods of showers/thunderstorms, mainly in the afternoon. Southerly
winds around 10-15 kt, turning SW at night. Low confidence.

.MARINE...
Combined seas have dropped below 5 ft at all of the nearshore buoys
in and near our marine zones, thus Small Craft Advisories have been
allowed to expire. East-northeast winds around 10-15 kt will veer to
SE and eventually S later today as a warm front lifts northward.
Showers will increase later this morning into this afternoon, with a
chance for thunderstorms, especially closer to shore and up Delaware
Bay. Winds will remain S/SW around 10 kt or so tonight, with seas
around 2 to 4 ft.

Outlook...

Saturday through Sunday Night..No marine headlines anticipated.
Southerly winds around 10-15 kt with gusts up to 20 kt. Seas 3 to 4
feet. Periods of showers and thunderstorms likely on the waters.

Monday through Tuesday...SCA conditions possible. Southerly winds
around 15-20 kt with gusts nearing 25 kt. Seas 4 to 5 feet. Periods
of showers and thunderstorms likely on the waters.

Rip Currents...

For Friday, a moderate easterly swell will continue but winds will
shift to more southerly around 15-20mph with seas in the surf zone
around 2-4 feet. This is expected to result in a moderate risk of
rip currents for all Atlantic Beaches.

For Saturday, swell will become south-southeast with a similar wind
speed and direction as seas remain between 2-4 feet. This should
result in a moderate risk of rip currents from Point Pleasant to
Cape May (NJ) and a low risk for rip currents for Monmouth County
(NJ) and Delaware beaches.
