Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 359 PM EDT Mon Jun 19 2023 .SYNOPSIS... Surface high pressure will gradually build southward across New England and the northern mid-Atlantic region through the middle of the week, while low pressure drifts around the southeast United States. That low will gradually send moisture northward with an increasing chance of showers through the second half of the week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/... High pressure off to our north and west continues to extend a ridge down into our region. Meanwhile, a cutoff upper low and its associated occluded surface low sit to our south and west across the southern Appalachian region. Some weak waves rounding the upper low will try to fire up a few afternoon showers or a thunderstorm mainly across our northern and southwestern zones. Scattered thunderstorms have been ongoing across portions of Virginia and Maryland this afternoon where higher dew points lie and ~1500 J/kg SBCAPE has developed, though hi-res guidance is not initializing well with this activity, as can happen in a weakly forced environment. Expect that these should stay primarily off to our south and west, though a sea breeze may be enough to spark off a few scattered showers/a thunderstorm in our area. Otherwise, as convective temperatures have been met, expect diurnal cumulus to continue through sunset. Temperatures are well into the 80s areawide this afternoon and should top out in the mid-upper 80s, save for the coast where the sea breeze will keep readings a few degrees cooler. A few scattered showers may linger into the evening and overnight hours, primarily in northern New Jersey/northeast Pennsylvania as an upper level trough across New England throws some shortwave energy across the area, but overall coverage and chances for precipitation remain around 20% or less. Otherwise, clouds will increase overnight working in tandem with warm advection to keep lows in the low to mid 60s. Speaking to the cloud cover, recent runs of hi-res guidance have continued to trend more aggressive with the development of a stratus layer overnight into Tuesday morning as surface moisture becomes trapped underneath an inversion thanks to the warm advection aloft. For Tuesday, again more scattered showers are possible as a Rex Block begins to take shape. An upper low to our southwest holds firm as a ridge forms to its north, and the trough across New England will rotate more shortwave energy around it. A potent shortwave will slide to our north and east on Tuesday afternoon, but should stay far enough in that direction to keep the highest PoPs out of our area. Still though, expect to see some scattered showers (20%) around across the Poconos/Lehigh Valley/northwestern NJ but with limited thunder potential as moisture is scarce in the mid-levels and will limit the potential for charge separation in any updrafts. The majority of the area will be dry but cloudy as onshore flow maintains moist low-levels and keeps temperatures cooler with highs expected in the upper 70s/low 80s. && .SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/... A weak ridge across the area Tue night will break down allowing the closed upper low/sfc low well the the southwest to creep towards the Middle Atlantic. Fair weather is expected for the area Tue night with an increase in clouds from SW to NE. A couple light showers for srn Delaware are possible. Lows range from the mid/upper 50s for the NW areas to the low/mid 60s for Delmarva and south NJ. After that, a stronger onshore flow will commence and chances for rains and tstms increase Wed/Thu. We'll have mostly chance pops for the N/W areas and low likely for the S/E areas. The onshore flow will keep temperatures cooler than average, so highs mostly in the 70s are expected with overnight lows in the upper 50s/low 60s. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/... After so much dry weather during late May and into June, it looks like we'll see the opposite for the end of the week and into next weekend. A closed low across the Tenn. Valley area will move slowly into Friday and then open up while weakening thru the weekend. The trough will cross the Middle Atlantic later Sunday. This pattern will provide opportunities for showers/tstms with seasonable temperatures. One big difference from the weather (as of late) will be the return of more humid air which will make an extended stay. Highs Fri thru Sun will be mostly normal or below with the abundant cloudiness expected. The overnight low will remain mild with mostly 60s for the region. Rainfall will focus on individual short waves which will rotate around the upper low and with a surface front for later Sat or Sunday. These features change with each new set of models at this time range, so we'll use generalities and blended pops attm. These pops, by-in-large, will be in the chance or low likely range much of the period. As is the case in summer, greatest chances for rains and tstms will favor the afternoon and early evening periods. && .AVIATION /20Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... THE FOLLOWING DISCUSSION IS FOR KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY AND SURROUNDING AREAS. Rest of Monday (through 00z)...VFR. Scattered cumulus around 5-8kft will diminish with sunset. There is a small chance (20%) of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm mainly north and west of KPHL. Southeasterly wind around 10 knots. High confidence. Monday night...Sub-VFR restrictions possible with developing low stratus. Light onshore flow and trapped moisture near the surface could result in some reduced visibilities near the coast and the low clouds. Hi-res guidance continues to show stratus developing and affecting KMIV/KACY beginning around 01z and I-95 terminals by 03z. Southeasterly winds diminish to 5 kts or less and gradually turn east to east northeast overnight. Low confidence on stratus development. Tuesday...Lingering restrictions possible in the morning before conditions return to VFR for the afternoon. Easterly wind around 10 knots. Moderate confidence. Outlook... Tue night... VFR except in patchy overnight fog. Wed/Wed night... Mostly VFR but scattered showers with lower CIGS/VSBYS mostly for Delmarva and srn NJ. Thu/Thu night... Southeasterly wind around 10 knots Monday night will become northwesterly 10-15 knots on Tuesday. Seas 2-3 feet. Outlook... Tue night... Sub-SCA with fair weather expected. Wednesday... Winds and seas build thru the day reaching SCA conditions early and moving South to North. Scattered showers and tstms for the Delaware and southern NJ waters. Wed night/Thursday... Frequent rains and chances for tstms SCA with low-end gales possible. Waves building over 6-8ft Wed night thru Thu. Thu night...Winds and seas decreasing, but showers and a few tstms continue. Fri/Sat... sub-SCA with scattered showers/tstms. Rip Currents... Through tonight, a lingering southeasterly swell continues with an east to southeast wind 5-10 mph. The breaking waves are forecast to be 1 to 3 feet, and therefore a LOW risk for the development of dangerous rip currents continues at the New Jersey and Delaware beaches. On Tuesday, winds become E to NE 10 to 15 mph, with breaking waves 2 to 4 ft.
