Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 135 PM EDT Mon Jun 12 2023 .SYNOPSIS... Low pressure tracks across the eastern Great Lakes region today. An attached warm front will get pulled into our area today followed by a cold front this evening. Weak high pressure arrives for Tue before another low and front move in for Wednesday. High pressure settles in Thursday, but it will be followed by an unsettled pattern for Friday and into the weekend. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... Forecast is on track this afternoon and no adjustments were made to the hourly grids. SPC has pushed the Slight Risk further north into the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Taking a look at the 17z mesoanalysis package, a tongue of instability exists extending from SE PA and Central New Jersey into Delmarva. MLCAPE values are around 1000 J/kg with SBCAPE values upwards of 2000+ J/kg over Delmarva and 1000 J/kg over SE PA and Southern NJ. The latest ACARS sounding from KPHL had around 1500+ J/kg of SBCAPE and 30 kt of 0-3 km shear. The entire region has a chance for severe weather today, but the highest probability to see damaging winds, 1 inch hail, or possibly even a tornado will be over Delmarva, SE PA, and southern NJ. The 12z IAD sounding shows a skinny CAPE profile with a PWAT value around 1.6 inches. This is over the 90th percentile for mid-June. The freezing level was shown to be around 12,000 feet, and with a low LCL, we are looking at a warm cloud layer over 10k feet. This does indicate the flooding potential for today, though storm motion will be relatively quick. However, some of the short range guidance does show multiple rounds of showers/thunderstorms for some spots, so we continue to monitor the flooding threat. While it is true that our area has not seen much rainfall in over a month, this could also work against us in terms of runoff. With such a dry surface, most of the rain may not seep into the surface, similar to what we saw at the end of April. Previous full update... Otherwise, a closed upper low will meander over the Great Lakes. Surface low pressure will organize and develop over western New York and western Pennsylvania this morning, and a cold front will extend out from that low. That low will track north into Canada, and the cold front extending from that low will approach later today. A secondary low will form on that front, and this system will pass through the region, with the secondary low passing through the Lehigh Valley, southern Poconos, and northern New Jersey, this evening. High pressure begins to build in from the west after midnight tonight. Southerly flow develops ahead of the approaching system, with south winds increasing to 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 20 mph by this afternoon. High temperatures will be some 6 to as much as 10 degrees cooler than Sunday, generally topping off in the upper 70s to low 80s. Surface moisture will also increase, with dew points rising well into the 60s, and to near/around 70 in Delmarva. As a result, SB CAPE values will rise to 500 to 1000 J/kg across southeast Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and to 1000 to 1500 J/kg across Delmarva. The Storm Prediction Center has Delmarva and southern New Jersey in a Slight Risk for severe weather, and a Marginal Risk for southeast Pennsylvania and the rest of New Jersey. The primary threat will be damaging wind gusts. Although the surface low will pass well north of Delmarva, there should be some mid level shortwave energy passing through Delmarva that will help support thunderstorm activity. PWATs will also rise to 1.8 to 2.0 inches. The heaviest rain will be associated with the passage of the secondary low over the northern half of the forecast area, with 1 to 2 inches of rain in the southern Poconos and the Lehigh Valley, while 1/2 to 1 inch of rain will fall down to the I-95 corridor. 1/3 to 1/2 inch of rain is expected for Delmarva and eastern New Jersey. Of course, locally higher amounts are possible in thunderstorms and any potential training of thunderstorms. Poor drainage and localized urban flooding is possible. The Weather Prediction Center has southeast Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey in a Marginal Risk for excessive rainfall. Showers taper off from west to east fairly quickly after midnight as the cold front departs. West winds develop behind the front. There may be enough lingering low level moisture for patchy fog to develop overnight tonight. Lows tonight will be in the 50s. && .SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/... The upper low remains across the Great Lakes Tue into Wed and then crosses the area Wed night. Most of the 00Z op models agree with the large scale changes. A dry slot rotating ahead of the low will arrive Tue and will keep dry weather for now, but more showers rotate in for Tue night into Wed night. A cold front crosses the area Wed, so this is the period with the highest pops in the short term with chance pops or the south and categorical for N NJ and NE PA. Thunderstorms are also possible with the added instability with the cool temps aloft and the June warmed lower atmosphere. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... Upper troughing across the Northeast and Middle Atlantic towards the end of the week will diminish somewhat this weekend (Saturday) before being replaced by more troughing next week. A pattern which will promote typical summery unsettled conditions with mostly sunny and mild days and afternoon shower/tstm chances. The best chances for showers for Thu/Fri will be for the N/NW areas as the upper low will be moving off to the NE. After a break Sat (only slight chances) a more widespread showery pattern is expected for Sun with 30%/40% pops for the area. Temperatures thru the period will not swing too far from early June normals with mostly low/mid 80s for highs and upper 50s to mid 60s for lows. Humidity levels will be moderate for the most part with an increase noted for Sunday. && .AVIATION /18Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas... Today (through 00z)...Showers and thunderstorms arrive between 18z-22z from west to east, with VSBY restrictions as low as IFR in the heaviest SHRA/TSRA. S-SE winds 10 to 15 kt with gusts up to 20 kt. Much stronger wind gusts in any TSRA that pass over a given terminal. Moderate confidence overall. Tonight (00Z through 12Z)...Sub-VFR conditions in SHRA/TSRA through 04z. CIGs improve thereafter. Patchy fog possible with sub-VFR VSBYs. Winds turn W 10 to 15 kt. Moderate confidence. Outlook...
