.SYNOPSIS...
A closed low remains over New England with numerous shortwaves
bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms on Friday. The low
finally pulls away on Saturday with high pressure bringing tranquil
weather to the region and a reduction of the smoke/haze. Another
closed low sets up to our northwest and rain chances return Sunday
night ahead of a cold front expected to pass on Monday night when
more widespread rain is possible. Unsettled weather continues for
most of next week as the closed low slowly pushes east.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Upper-level low pressure that has been persisting around New
England for the past several days will finally begin to shift
eastward, as one last fairly potent shortwave trough rotates
around the low into tonight.

That trough is responsible for the isolated showers around our
region this evening. The atmosphere over our region should begin
to stabilize especially as we get past sunset and the main
upper- low itself will be filling. The best chance for these
showers is through 9 PM before they should gradually dissipate.
Do not expect most areas to see more than a few hundredths of
an inch, but if a heavier thunderstorm does develop, there could
easily be a quick quarter-inch of rain. That could be
accompanied by some small hail as well, given the cold
temperatures aloft and low freezing levels. However, compared to
yesterday, vertical shear is much lower, only on the order of
20 kt of deep layer shear. That should keep the risk of severe
weather quite low. Once the trough axis moves through, activity
will diminish quickly near and after 03Z. Otherwise, expect
fairly clear skies tonight. There still is some poorer air
quality and haze this afternoon, but mainly to the south over
the Delmarva, with air quality in the 'moderate' to even 'good'
categories farther north. That trend will continue through
tonight into Saturday, with just a little leftover haze mainly
evident over southern portions of the forecast area. Lows
tonight will be similar to last night, mainly in the 50s.

Heading into Saturday, high pressure will build in from the
southwest, with winds both at the surface and aloft becoming
more westerly. This should result in quite a bit of sunshine and
high temperatures rising into the upper 70s and low 80s, a good
5 to 8 degrees warmer than Friday.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
The upper level low continues to pull away Saturday night, and our
region will be in between two systems, with the next upper low
sinking south across the Great Lakes Sunday Night. It should be a
quiet intermission period overall with 500 mb heights increasing as
the initial low pulls away and brief surface high pressure nudges in
from the southeast. Any showers up north will dissipate by nightfall
with the loss of daytime heating. Overnight lows Saturday Night will
dip down into the 50s/low 60s.

Sunday looks to be the warmest day for the foreseeable future as
south/southwesterly return flow sets up on the west side of the
surface high. Warm advection will ensue with 850 mb temperatures
increasing to 14-16C. Dew points will bump up slightly into the low-
mid 50s, but Sunday doesn't look to be overly oppressive;
temperatures will get into the upper 80s, with some spots
within the urban corridor touching 90. With the warm advection
continuing overnight, expect lows to hold 5-8 degrees warmer
than Saturday night in the mid to upper 60s. The shift in the
upper level pattern also means a shift in the winds from
north/northwesterly to west/southwesterly. This will alleviate
the smoke transport into our region and expect that we will get
relief from the hazy and smoky conditions through the weekend.

The bigger story to monitor for the short term period is the
potential of some much needed rainfall Monday into Tuesday. The day
to watch looks to be Monday/Monday night as an upper level low
swings down from Canada into the Great Lakes. A potent shortwave
will round the base of the closed low, moving into our area the
first half of the day on Monday. At the surface, an area of low
pressure will traverse through the Ohio Valley into western New
York/Ontario. This will drop a cold front through our region Monday
night, though periods of rain are anticipated from late Sunday night
into early Tuesday morning.

We'll see increasing moisture advection with the prevailing
southwesterly flow, and warm advection driven scattered showers are
possible late Sunday night as a warm front lifts north through PA.
Then on Monday as the cold front approaches, we'll see the potential
for afternoon and evening thunderstorms. The deterministic suite
differs slightly in timing of FROPA, with the GFS/GEM being the most
progressive with an afternoon passage while the NAM/ECMWF favor
later in the evening. Will have to monitor the potential for any
strong to severe thunderstorms as the latest model soundings still
show around 30 kt of effective shear as mid-level flow increases and
SBCAPE values are progged around 800-1000 J/kg. Heavy rainfall looks
to be a possibility as well, with model soundings showing PWATs
around 1.6-1.8", a warm cloud layer around 10-12k feet, and MBE
vectors 10 knots or less. The Weather Prediction Center (WPC) does
have the vast majority of the area save for far eastern NJ and most
of Delmarva in a MARGINAL risk (at least 5% chance) for Excessive
Rainfall. We will have a better idea of specific impacts for Monday
once we get within the range of CAM guidance.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The closed low will slowly meander towards our region through the
middle of next week, with numerous weak shortwaves pivoting around
the low and into our region. There is pretty good ensemble support
that the upper low will slide across southern New York through the
middle of next week. The surface low will wrap up and occlude
underneath the upper low, though some lingering surface troughs may
pass through. Because we will reside on the east side of the upper
low for the beginning of the week, moisture will remain across the
region and with the upper support, this will bring continued
unsettled conditions through most of the long-term period. Daily
shower chances, generally around 25-50%, will persist through the
week. Some instability could work its way in next Wednesday, but
only looking at slight chance (15-20%) of thunderstorms.

Temperatures are expected to be right around or just a tick or two
below seasonal normals for mid-June through all of next week (upper
70s/low 80s, with low 70s in the higher elevations for high
temperatures and upper 50s/low 60s for low temperatures).

.AVIATION /00Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas...

Tonight...Aside from brief visibility restrictions with SHRA
through 03Z, expect VFR conditions through the overnight hours.
Do not expect any visibility restrictions in HZ and smoke, but
will be keeping an eye on it. Winds with any showers this
evening may briefly be erratic and gusty, but outside of that,
expect winds 5 kt or less, favoring a westerly direction, though
in valleys, winds may go light and variable. Moderate
confidence.

Saturday...VFR conditions expected. Westerly winds expected to
increase to around 10kt during the day. High confidence.

Outlook...

Saturday Night...VFR. Southwest wind around 5 kt or less. High
confidence.

Sunday...VFR. Southerly wind 5-10 kt. Some showers possible late at
KRDG/KABE. Moderate confidence.

Monday...Sub-VFR conditions expected with periods of rain and
scattered thunderstorms. Southerly wind around 10-15 kt with gusts
to 25 kt. Moderate confidence.

Monday Night...Sub-VFR conditions expected as a cold front passes.
Southerly wind will shift to the west/northwest around 10 kt. Low
confidence in timing of frontal passage.

Tuesday...Primarily VFR though some restrictions possible with
scattered showers. West/Southwest wind around 10-15 kt. Moderate
confidence.

Wednesday...Primarily VFR though some restrictions possible in the
afternoon with scattered showers. Southwest wind 10-15 kt with gusts
to 20-25 kt. Moderate confidence.

.MARINE...
Will continue to be below small craft advisory criteria with
generally light winds and low seas through Saturday. After the
sea breeze relaxes this evening, winds will become more westerly
at 5 to 10 kt tonight, then turn more southerly again during the
day on Saturday. Seas will remain around 1 to 3 feet.

Outlook...

Sunday...No marine headlines expected. Southwesterly wind 10-15 kt.
Seas 2 to 4 feet.

Sunday Night-Monday Night...SCA conditions possible. Southerly wind
15-20 kt with gusts to 25 kt. Periods of rain with thunderstorms
possible. Seas 4 to 6 feet.

Tuesday-Wednesday...No marine headlines expected. Southwesterly
wind around 10-15 kt with gusts to 20 kt. Seas 2 to 4 feet.

Rip Currents...

Saturday...We are currently forecasting a LOW risk for the
development of dangerous rip currents for the New Jersey and
Delaware beaches. Off shore winds should continue with WNW
winds 5 to 10 mph in the morning will turn SSW with the
development of an afternoon sea breeze. Breaking waves 3 to 4 ft
with a 5 to 7 second southeasterly swell. However, a 14 second
dominant southeasterly swell was noted at several of the off
shore buoy locations this evening. If this doesn't subside by
Saturday morning, it could increase the risk for rip currents to
moderate. We will reevaluate Saturday morning.

Sunday...Flow will turn southerly, and thus more parallel to
shore, but even so a dominant short period swell and wave
heights of 2 feet or less should keep the risk for the
development of dangerous rip currents in the LOW category.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
With the overnight high tide, some guidance has sites along the
Atlantic coast getting well into minor flooding. This seems too
high given the off shore flow and decreasing astronomical tides,
so while spotty minor tidal flooding is possible, do not
anticipate the need for a coastal flood advisory at this time.
