Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 328 PM EDT Wed Apr 26 2023 .SYNOPSIS... A weak cold front passes through the region this evening, becoming a stationary boundary to our south. High pressure briefly returns on Thursday, before moving off the New England coast Thursday night. A series of low pressure systems will pass through the region this weekend, with the first occuring Friday into Saturday and the second occuring Sunday into Monday. The unsettled pattern will then linger through the middle portion of next week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/... Scattered showers will develop and persist across the area into tonight. Temperatures will remain near normal tonight and a few degrees below normal during the daytime Thursday. A shortwave trough will gradually pivot through the region into tonight. An associated mid-level jet maxima will also slide across the area tonight before subsidence and rising heights arrive from the west into Thursday. At the surface, a weak frontal boundary located across the Appalachian region today will sink slowly southeastward into our area and stall out on Thursday. Scattered showers developing upstream across Pennsylvania and Maryland will push gradually eastward into our area by late this afternoon and evening. Some low end instability around 200 J/kg or less will support some isolated thunder with any more robust cells that can materialize, so will keep the isolated thunder mention in the forecast into this evening. Some small hail is possible with this isolated activity as well. The mid-level jet dynamics will support forcing for ascent and thus scattered shower activity continuing well into the night despite lack of diurnal heating, especially across the eastern half of the area. The latest CAMs continue to support this idea, with the HRRR keeping a few showers around even just after daybreak Thursday. QPF should remain light, generally around a tenth to quarter of an inch at most. However if any training of cells occurs, amounts close to a half inch are possible. South to southeast winds around 5-10 mph this afternoon will diminish this evening and back around to the southeast or east. Temperatures will range from the mid 50s to low 60s across the area this afternoon. Locations near and north of I-95 should see winds go light and variable, but favoring a northeast direction once the front passes through overnight. Skies will remain mostly cloudy tonight outside of the shower activity. Some patchy fog may develop where more breaks in the clouds occur, especially across eastern Pennsylvania. Lows will be mainly in the 40s tonight and in the upper 30s across the southern Poconos. The showers will be dissipating and moving offshore after daybreak. Any patchy fog and clouds will scatter out as the morning progresses, although clouds may linger more across the coastal plains where greater surface moisture will support greater coverage of diurnal cumulus. Winds will be light favoring an easterly direction. Highs will be in the low to mid 60s in most places, and in the mid to upper 50s across the higher elevations of northern New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania. && .SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/... High pressure moves off the coast Thursday evening where this in short will be the beginning of a rather unsettled weather pattern through the early portion of next week. Surface low pressure over the Southern MS River Valley tracks northeast along with the stalled surface boundary to our south, lifting back to the north as a warm front on Friday. By Friday night, initial surface low will be over the Great Lakes with a secondary surface low developing over the Mid-Atlantic/Chesapeake region and moving off the coast during the day Saturday. For the most part, Thursday evening is expected to remain mostly dry along with increasing clouds. The exception is the Eastern Shore of MD and Southern DE where there will be a greater chance of rain beginning before sunrise. Otherwise, the progression of rain will increase throughout the remainder of the morning from south to north. The heaviest of rain looks to occur late Friday afternoon through Friday night basis the available short-range guidance, where rain will be moderate at times. Have opted to remove the chance for thunder during the day on Friday, as instability does not look as promising as it did earlier this morning, but cannot completely rule out a rumble or two. Also, winds will ramp up Friday into Friday night as the pressure gradient between departing high and approaching low strengthens. In general, expect E-SE winds of 15- 25mph sustained, with gusts up to 30-35mph possible Friday night into Saturday morning. Winds will tend to ease on Saturday pressure gradient weakens with surface low moving off the coast. Depending on the forward progression of secondary low, most of Saturday afternoon may end up fairly dry especially for southern locales basis available short-range guidance. However, due to discrepancies between deterministic and short range guidance, have kept at least the chance of showers & thunder in the forecast. In terms of rainfall amounts, generally looking at widespread 0.75-1.25 inches through Saturday, which would be a much needed rainfall considering most of the area has been abnormally dry. For temperatures, looking at highs only in the upper 50s to low 60s on Friday, with lows in the low 40s to low 50s Friday night. Saturday may be up to 5-10 degrees warmer depending on the timing of exiting secondary low, with the exception of the Poconos and N NJ where temps may be a few degrees cooler than Friday. && .LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... The general idea for the long term is for the unsettled weather pattern to continue through the early portion of next week due to persistent blocking pattern across North America. Broad low meandering over the Great Lakes from the day prior lingers, as a cold front extends southward. Some additional southern stream upper energy near the Gulf Coast is expected to become infused into the parent upper trough, which will aid in developing a secondary surface low along the front Sunday night into Monday. With this being said, Saturday night and into the first half of Sunday looks to be rather quiet as the area is caught in between low pressure systems, although have kept the chance of rain areawide given unsettled pattern. More persistent and heavier rain returns late Sunday into Sunday night as cold front and secondary low track through the region, lingering into Monday morning. Winds will increase Sunday night into Monday ahead of frontal passage with gusts up to 30-35mph, before tapering off later Monday. For the remainder of the long term through Wednesday, the low over the Great Lakes is forecast to become vertically stacked over Central Quebec. With several shortwaves pivoting around upper low/trough, expect a chance of showers each afternoon, especially to the north, with temps running below average. && .AVIATION /20Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Rest of Today...VFR with SCT to BKN clouds. Southeast to south winds around 5-10 kts. Scattered showers will move into the area by 21Z. Any heavier showers may briefly introduce MVFR visibility. High confidence. Tonight...VFR with BKN clouds. South to southeast winds around 5-10 kts early will diminish and become 5 kts or less overnight favoring an easterly direction. Scattered showers will persist through around 06-09Z, perhaps even toward 12Z near PHL/PNE/TTN. Any heavier showers may briefly introduce MVFR visibility. Some patchy fog or MVFR ceilings may develop by 09Z. Moderate confidence overall. Thursday...Any lingering restrictions in fog or low clouds will dissipate by 15Z or so, then VFR expected with SCT to BKN clouds. Winds around 5 kts favoring and easterly direction.
