At 1242 AM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along
a line extending from near Point Pleasant Beach to near Shamong to
Tuckerton. Movement was east at 55 mph.
HAZARD...Pea size hail.

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure moves across Quebec tonight as warm front lifts
north ahead of cold front that will sweep across the area later
this evening. High pressure builds in for Sunday ahead of
another low pressure system Monday into Tuesday. High pressure
returns mid-week before a stronger area of low pressure returns
by next weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
1130 PM Update...Scattered showers and thunderstorms have
developed across the coastal plain, though a bit later than
originally anticipated. This activity has been producing hail
up to half inch diameter and some cloud to ground lightning.
This activity should move offshore by 1 AM or so, then the cold
front should sweep through from west to east before daybreak.
Additionally, areas of dense fog have developed across Delmarva.
A Dense Fog Advisory was issued until 4 AM. The approaching
cold front should begin to improve visibility by around that
time.
As of 9 PM, low pressure was centered near Lake Huron with a
warm front extending south/east from this feature over western
PA down into VA and then arching through the Delmarva into
southern NJ. This warm front had been slow to move north.
Still, there are a few showers that have developed and extend
from NY down to VA.
As we head through this evening, the low will move north and
east across Lake Huron into Ontario with its triple point moving
towards SE PA. A mesoanalysis continues to indicate there is
around 200 to 500 j/kg of elevated CAPE across the southern half
of the forecast area along with impressive lapse rates aloft.
This means that the CAPE in the mid levels are quite "fat" and
potentially supportive of strong updrafts. Limiting factors
are 1. the strongest forcing is just to our north (and north of
where the best instability is) and 2. the bulk shear appears to
be so strong it's not really allowing any updrafts to organize
to their potential.
The cold front / occlusion will move through west to east into
the early overnight period bringing any showers/storms to an end
with clearing skies as winds shift to westerly. Expect lows by
Sunday morning ranging from the mid 30s over the southern
Poconos with low to mid 40s heading farther south and east
towards the urban corridor and mid/upper 40s over southern
Delmarva into southern NJ.
For Sunday, low pressure will continue to lift north of the area
through the day while weak high pressure gradually builds in at the
surface. This will result in a mainly sunny day with breezy west
winds due to the gradient behind the system and diurnal mixing.
Generally expect west winds gusting 20 up to 30 mph. Highs should
generally range from upper 50s north to mid 60s south except a bit
cooler over the southern Poconos.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
By Sunday night, high pressure will be overhead meaning winds will
drop off quickly after sundown and become light or calm. Skies
will be mostly clear early before some higher clouds move in
from the south early Monday morning, so do think that most
places radiationally cool through at least the first half of the
night. Lows should still be seasonable ranging from the mid 30s
to low 40s.
As we head into Monday, some filtered sunshine may occur early, but
skies will thicken through the morning as the next low tracks into
the Ohio Valley. Most areas are expected to remain dry through the
morning, with the exception of the Delmarva where a slight chance of
rain may occur. During the afternoon, the low will translate its
energy to a developing low off the coast to our south and east
Monday night, where the chances of rain become more widespread. Not
expecting a washout by any means, but expect a widespread 0.2" to
0.4" of rain across the area. Highs Monday should reach mid 50s to
near 60. Lows will be in the mid 30s to low 40s, so do expect rain
for the majority of the area. The only exception is the highest
terrain in Carbon/Monroe (PA) and Sussex (NJ) counties which may mix
with some wet snow as temperatures are near freezing Tuesday morning.
With respect to Tuesday, there really hasn't been any further
agreement with guidance if the Tuesday will remain dry or not. There
is still some guidance that indicates the precipitation Monday night
will linger into Tuesday morning as another weak disturbance passes
by Tuesday afternoon and evening. With the uncertainty and wide
array of solutions, have simply opted to include the entire area
under a slight chance to chance POPs through Tuesday night with
seasonable highs/lows.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The period of Wednesday and Thursday looks to remain fairly quiet as
high pressure across the Central Plains shifts east. There will be a
weak shortwave passing well to our north Wednesday night into
Thursday, but with primary forcing occuring across upstate NY and
the interior Northeast; not expecting more than just an increase in
clouds at this time. High pressure then moves overhead Thursday
through the first half of Friday, before a stronger low pressure
system approaches late Friday into next weekend. Temperatures look
to run a few degrees below normal Wednesday/Thursday, but by
Friday/Saturday, temperatures will rebound as flow becomes southerly
and primary surface low looks to track across the Great Lakes.

.AVIATION /04Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Through tonight...Generally expecting IFR to predominate into
this evening though there will be some variability in
conditions. Scattered showers/storms will be possible this
evening but chances are not quite high enough to include in the
TAF. That said, it is worth mentioning that any storms could
contain nickel to pea size hail. Light and variable will become
westerly around 10 knots with some higher gusts around 06-09Z
following a cold frontal passage. The cold front will also clear
conditions out to VFR. Finally, expect most sites to see a
period of LLWS until cold front passage. Moderate confidence
overall, but lower confidence on timing.
Sunday...VFR with winds winds 10 to 15 gusting up to 25 knots. High
confidence.
Outlook...
Sunday night...VFR. W-NW winds around 5-10kts early, will become
light and variable after midnight. High confidence.
Monday...Sub-VFR possible as rain showers are expected to increase
through the afternoon and evening. E-SE winds of 5-10kts during the
day, will back and become N-NE by Monday night around 5kts. Low
confidence.
Tuesday...Sub-VFR possible due to rain showers expected. NW-N winds
of 5-10kts with gusts up to 15kts. Low confidence.
Wednesday...VFR. W-NW winds of 10-15kts with gusts up to 20kts
possible. Moderate confidence.
Thursday...VFR. W-NW winds of 10-15kts with gusts up to 20-25kts.
High confidence.

.MARINE...
Fog has reduced visibility to around 1 NM or less across much of
the coastal waters. A marine Dense Fog Advisory has been issued
until 4 AM. A cold front will push offshore before daybreak
resulting in improving visibility.
Small Craft Advisory conditions will persist over the ocean waters
through tonight due to seas 4-6+ feet and winds gusting 20 to 30
knots. Winds will remain southerly through this evening and then
shift to westerly overnight. The conditions should diminish below
SCA levels around the early to mid morning Sunday, maybe holding
on through late morning across the far northern waters.
Finally, there could be some scattered showers/storms over the
waters this evening and they could contain some hail.
