Surface high pressure will gradually build southward across New England and the northern mid-Atlantic region through the middle of the week, while low pressure drifts around the southeast United States. That low will gradually send moisture northward with an increasing chance of showers through the second half of the week. Cool onshore flow midweek will give way to warmer and more humid conditions heading into the weekend. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... Easterly onshore flow this morning continues to favor low stratus formation with some patchy fog slowly creeping inland and likely linger through early to mid morning before scattering out. For the rest of Tuesday, a Rex Block remains in place, keeping a strong surface high across New England with a cut-off low across much of the Southeastern US with the Delaware Valley caught in between with weak ridging aloft. With that said, some weak upper level shortwaves will pass over the region this afternoon, providing a slight chance for an isolated to scattered shower across the the Poconos/Lehigh Valley/northwestern NJ and other chance across the Delmarva. Right now, kept all POPs for Tuesday in the 20% or less range. Otherwise, the majority of the area will be dry but cloudy as onshore flow maintains moist low-levels and keeps temperatures cooler with highs expected in the upper 70s/low 80s. The weak ridge across the area Tue night will break down allowing the closed upper low/sfc low well the the southwest to creep towards the Middle Atlantic. Fair weather is expected for the area Tue night with an increase in clouds from SW to NE. A couple light showers for srn Delaware are possible with POPs increasing towards daybreak from 20% to 40%. Lows range from the mid/upper 50s for the NW areas to the low/mid 60s for Delmarva and south NJ. && .SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... Models coming into better agreement on a cool and cloudy midweek period, dominated by unseasonably strong onshore flow. The challenging part of the forecast will be timing the northward advance of precipitation as high pressure centered to our northeast slowly gives way to low pressure lifting northward from the southeastern United States. Heading into Wednesday, the surface high centered over New England will be strengthening and even building southward into the mid-Atlantic. However, aloft the flow will be turning southerly with warm, moist air advecting northward along the East Coast. While the parent vertically-stacked low pressure system will be centered around Georgia, troughing will begin to translate down to the surface off the mid-Atlantic coast. With the strong high to the north, that will result in a tightening pressure gradient, peaking Wednesday into Wednesday night. ENE winds will be sustained from 10 to 20 mph across much of our region, with gusts over 30 mph likely toward the coast, even locally 40 mph around Cape May and coastal Delaware. Clouds will thicken and keep temperatures unseasonably cool, with highs only in the upper 60s to mid 70s, coolest near the coast. For now our forecast portrays a quarter-inch or so of rain by the end of the day in southern Delaware, but only a slight chance of light rain reaching Philadelphia by sunset. Odds increase substantially Wednesday night into Thursday from south to north, as high pressure shifts off the east Coast, only aiding moisture transport and isentropic lift expanding across the mid-Atlantic. The rain will be stratiform farther north across our area, with cool air in the low-levels from onshore flow remaining on Thursday. NBM and SREF calibrated guidance suggests some low probabilities (near 10%) for thunder around the Delmarva later Thursday, so have a mention in there, but otherwise expect light to moderate rain showers for the rest of our region. Temperatures will actually cool across the interior on Thursday, but remain steady elsewhere, with highs generally in the upper 60s to low 70s. Easterly winds will start to ease compared to Wednesday, especially at the coast, but a breeze will add to the unseasonably cool sensible weather. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/... Following a record dry May and a fairly dry start to June, the northern mid-Atlantic is looking at an extended period of warm, humid and rather wet weather for the end of the week, the weekend, and even into next week. The flow throughout much of the atmosphere will become well-aligned from the south, and remain that way for much of the long term forecast period. Cut- off low pressure over the Southeast US will only slowly lift northward toward the Great Lakes, then drift eastward across our region over the weekend. Meanwhile, longer range model guidance is tentatively in good agreement of another fairly strong upper-level trough ejecting eastward from the northern Rockies toward the Great Lakes early next week. That system may amplify as it settles into the long wave trough set up along the East Coast, reinforcing warm, moist southerly flow across our region. The airmass from Friday through the weekend looks quite convective, and showers/t-storms will tend to be enhanced with daytime heating, particularly if there is any sunshine. While it will not rain all the time, and any one day through this period does not look anomalously moist for June, the pattern will be capable of producing heavy rain, particularly with any training convection or when the flow aloft weakens. Despite the drought in some parts of our region, flooding may become an issue particularly next week if this pattern comes to fruition and the ground becomes more saturated. && .AVIATION /07Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... THE FOLLOWING DISCUSSION IS FOR KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY AND SURROUNDING AREAS. Early this morning (through 12Z)...Low stratus, and possibly some fog, will develop over the region tonight due to the current moisture/flow pattern. MVFR ceilings are possible for all sites except KABE/KRDG by the 06/07Z time frame. Guidance continues to suggest that IFR ceilings are possible by 09z for all sites except KRDG/KABE. Southeasterly winds to begin the period will diminish to mainly 5 kts or less and gradually turn east to east northeast overnight. Low confidence on stratus, or fog, development timing and IFR ceilings being met/timing. Tuesday...Lingering restrictions possible in the morning before conditions return to VFR for the afternoon. Easterly wind around 10 knots. Moderate confidence. Tue night...Patchy fog and low stratus possible again.
