Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
321 AM EDT Sun Jun 11 2023

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure moves out to sea today. Low pressure approaches
tonight and moves through the region Monday afternoon through
Monday night. A series of disturbances will then pass through
the region for the middle to end of this week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Weak high pressure remains well offshore while the upper ridge
builds over the Mid-Atlantic today. Overall, a fair and very
warm day is expected. Clouds will be rather limited and mostly
high and perhaps some mid-clouds at times. Under the sun,
temperatures will warm into the mid/upper 80s for most spots
with perhaps a few 90 degree temps for Delmarva or around the
metro. Winds will be light from the SW this morning, but then
increase from the South this afternoon.

Tonight, the warm advection ahead of a developing low in the
Ohio Valley will develop over the area. A steady South winds of
10 to 15 mph will be across the area while clouds increase from
W to E overnight. Showers will move in for the overnight with
likely pops for Berks County and mostly chc pops elsewhere by
dawn Monday.

&&

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Closed H5 low will meander over the Great Lakes Monday through
Tuesday, slowly sliding into the eastern Great Lakes Tuesday
night. Meanwhile, surface low pressure will be over western New
York and western Pennsylvania with a cold front extending out
from that low. As that low lifts into Canada, the cold front
tracks east on Monday. A secondary low forms on that front and
passes through the region Monday evening, and then the cold
front will be through late Monday night.

Strong southerly flow develops ahead of the approaching cold
front, and surface dew points will rise well into the 60s to
near 70. SB CAPE values will rise to 500 to 1000 J/kg and PWATs
will be upwards of 1.8 to 2.0. Additionally, there will be 30 to
35 kt of 0-6 km Bulk Shear. The Storm Prediction Center has
southern New Jersey and Delmarva in a Marginal risk for severe
weather which is where the highest instability will be and a
general outlook elsewhere. Gusty winds possible with the
strongest storms.

The main threat Monday afternoon and Monday evening will be in
the form of heavy rain. However, it has been quite dry, and it
is possible the models are overestimating QPF. Flash Flood
Guidance values are also quite high, with 1 hour FFG values 2.5
to 3 inches, 3 hour FFG values 4 to 5 inches, and 6 hour FFG
values 4.5 to 5.5 inches. Localized poor drainage flooding
possible, but not expecting widespread flash flooding. Generally
1 to 1.5 inches of rain with locally higher amounts will fall
along and west of the I-95 corridor, and 1/4 to 1/2 inch QPF
possible for eastern New Jersey and into Delaware.

Conditions dry out late Monday night behind the passage of the
cold front, and most of Tuesday should be dry. As the closed H5
low pushes east, some more shortwave energy will spin off of the
low and will pass through the southern Poconos and northern New
Jersey. isolated showers will develop Tuesday afternoon, and
then there is a better chance for showers Tuesday night.

Highs on Monday and Tuesday will top off in the upper 70s to
around 80. However, dew points will be in the 60s on Monday, and
then in the 50s on Tuesday behind the cold front.

&&

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
A prolonged period of unsettled weather on tap for the Long
Term period, though not expecting a washout during this period.
Will lean on the NBM for the Long Term period.

Closed upper low over the eastern Great Lakes on Wednesday will
move through northern New England and into Maine Thursday
through Thursday night. Another closed low will follow behind it
on Friday. By Saturday, another system may approach from the
west.

In terms of sensible weather, showers will be likely on
Wednesday for the southern Poconos, Lehigh Valley, and northern
New Jersey, while chances are expected elsewhere. A tight
westerly pressure gradient will develop with 15 to 20 mph winds
with 25 to 30 mph gusts.

From there, scattered showers possible on Thursday and Friday
as upper level shortwaves pass through the region. Another
system approaches on Saturday, but PoPs will be capped at slight
chance for now.

Temperatures will be near normal on Wednesday, and then may run
several degrees above normal to close out the week.

&&

.AVIATION /07Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas...

Today...VFR expected. Mostly sct-bkn high and mid level clouds.
Southwest winds increasing to 5 to 10 knots this morning and
then winds turning more South 10 to 15 knots this afternoon.
Gusts to around 20 knots developing this afternoon at
KMIV/KACY/KPHL/KILG. Medium/high confid.

Tonight...VFR continues with bkn-ovc mid/high level clouds.
South winds 10 to 15 knots expected. Medium confid.

Outlook...

Monday through Monday night...VFR initially, then sub-VFR
conditions in SHRA and scattered TSRA Monday afternoon and
Monday evening. VFR conditions return late Monday night. S to SE
winds 10 to 20 kt with gusts up to 25 kt Monday, becoming W to
NW 5 to 10 kt Monday night. Moderate confidence overall, low
confidence on timing.

Tuesday through Tuesday night...VFR Tuesday, then sub-VFR
conditions possible in SHRA late Tuesday night. W winds 10 to 15
kt with gusts up to 20 kt Tuesday, then S winds 5 to 10 kt
Tuesday night. Moderate confidence.

Wednesday through Wednesday night...Sub-VFR conditions in SHRA
with isolated TSRA Wednesday, then VFR Wednesday night. W winds
15 to 20 kt with 25 to 30 kt gusts Wednesday, then 5 to 10 kt
Wednesday night. Moderate confidence.

Thursday...VFR overall, but cannot rule out scattered SHRA,
especially at KRDG/KABE. W winds 10 to 15 kt with gusts up to 20
kt. Moderate confidence.

&&

.MARINE...
High pressure offshore remains in control of the weather today
and tonight. Winds and seas will remain below SCA conditions
through the morning and then winds will increase thru the
afternoon and remain thru tonight. We'll bring out the SCA flag
for the DE/srn NJ zones at 3PM then extend it north after 6PM.
Seas will build to 5 ft on the ocean during those SCA periods.
Fair weather today and this evening with a chance of showers
towards dawn Monday.

Outlook...

Monday through Monday night...SCA conditions will develop due
to S winds 15 to 20 kt with gusts up to 25 kt and seas building
to 3 to 5 feet. Winds turn W 10 to 15 kt Monday night behind a
cold front. VSBY restrictions in showers and thunderstorms
Monday afternoon and Monday evening.

Tuesday through Tuesday night...Conditions generally sub-SCA. W
winds 15 to 20 kt, becoming S 10 to 15 kt at night.

Wednesday through Wednesday night...SCA conditions possible. SW
winds 15 to 20 kt with gusts up to 25 kt during the day, then W
5 to 10 kt at night. Seas 3 to 4 ft.

Thursday...Sub-SCA conditions expected. S winds 10 to 15 kt.

Rip Currents...

For Sunday, there is a MODERATE risk for the development of
dangerous rip currents along the Atlantic Coast of Cape May
County. This is the result of stronger winds driving increased
wind driven waves, particularly into Sunday afternoon. The
MODERATE risk may need expansion northward along the Atlantic
Coast of Atlantic County. Along the remainder of the Atlantic
Coast of New Jersey and Delaware, there is a LOW risk on Sunday
for the development of dangerous rip currents.

For Monday, the MODERATE risk may continue to expand northward
to include the entire Atlantic Coast of New Jersey as increased
wind driven waves continue. A LOW risk for rip currents is
still forecast for the Delaware Atlantic Coast on Monday.
