Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 744 PM EDT Mon Apr 10 2023 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure will meander over the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast through the end of the week. A series of frontal boundaries will affect the area over the weekend and into the start of the following week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/... High pressure remains in control as it is currently centered just offshore to our south and east. The high is expected to retrograde slightly back to the southwest overnight and into Tuesday. As a result, the pressure gradient will tighten up across the region and increase winds slightly for Tuesday. It will also allow a weak system passing to our north to travel far enough south to increase higher level clouds by Tuesday afternoon. With the slightly higher winds and warm air advection, low temperatures will be warmer tonight in the upper 30s and low 40s. Highs on Tuesday are expected to be in the low 70s for much of the region. && .SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/... High pressure will be firmly entrenched over the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic for the mid-week period. West to southwest flow will be in place, and warm air advection will be underway as 850 mb temperatures rise from +7C to +8C Tuesday night to around +10C on Wednesday, and then to +12C to +14C on Thursday. With some shortwave energy passing through the region Tuesday night, there will be some clouds. Otherwise, abundant sunshine will be in place Wednesday through Thursday. Highs on Wednesday will warm into the upper 70s to around 80. Surface dew points will rise into the mid and upper 40s by late Wednesday morning before falling back into the lower 40s on Wednesday afternoon. By Thursday, highs will be in the low to mid 80s under increasing southwest flow. Dew points will rise into the lower 50s Thursday morning before falling back into the mid and upper 40s due to afternoon mixing. Since conditions are dry, there are some concerns for an elevated threat for the rapid spread of fire. Min RH values Wednesday and Thursday will be around 30 percent. Southwest winds will range from 10 to 15 mph with 20 to 25 mph gusts on Wednesday, and then southwest winds will range from 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 20 mph on Thursday. Although temperatures will be cooler near the coasts, surface winds during the day should be too strong to allow any sea breezes that develop from moving too far inland. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/... High pressure slides offshore Thursday night through Friday. A closed upper low over the Gulf Coast states will open up as a trough approaches from the west, and this low will lift along the coast Friday night through Saturday. Will introduce slight chance/chance PoPs Friday night, and then will carry chance PoPs for Saturday. With highs in the upper 70s to low 80s, and surface dew points in the mid and upper 50s, there may be enough instability to support some thunderstorms. Will carry a slight chance for thunder Saturday afternoon. After a drying out period Saturday night through Sunday morning, a frontal boundary approaches from the west touching off some showers Sunday afternoon through Monday. Cold air advection will be underway behind the departing cold front for Monday. Temperatures will be well above normal for the Long Term period. After highs in the mid and upper 80s, possibly approaching 90 along the I-95 corridor on Friday, highs will be in the upper 70s to around 80 on Saturday and Sunday. Behind the cold front, highs will be in the upper 60s to around 70 Monday. In general, used the NBM guidance for the Long Term period. && .AVIATION /00Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Tonight...VFR. A few cirrus clouds should start to enter the area overnight. Any initially southerly winds from sea, bay, and river breezes will shift southwest by around 04z. Otherwise, southwest winds will prevail around 5 knots. High confidence. Tuesday...VFR with increasing cirrus, particularly into the afternoon. West-southwest winds around 10-15 knots with gusts up to 20kts. High confidence. Outlook... Tuesday night...VFR. SW winds 10 to 15 kt with gusts up to 20 kt. High confidence. Wednesday through Wednesday night...VFR. W to NW winds around 15 kt with 20 to 25 kt gusts during the day, then SW winds 5 to 10 kt at night. High confidence. Thursday through Thursday night...VFR. W winds 10 to 15 kt with gusts up to 20 kt during the day, then 5 to 10 kt at night. High confidence. Friday through Friday night...VFR through much of Friday. Sub- VFR possible late Friday night in light SHRA. S winds 10 to 15 kt. Moderate confidence. Saturday...Potential for sub-VFR conditions in SHRA. S winds around 10 kt. Low confidence. && .MARINE... Sub-advisory conditions are expected through at least early Tuesday afternoon. Waves may linger near 5 feet through late this evening, particularly for waters south of Cape Henlopen. Otherwise, seas of 2 to 4 feet are expected through mid-day Tuesday. Waves are then expected to increase slightly to 3 to 5 feet by late Tuesday afternoon. This will create the potential for marginal SCA conditions for ocean waters. However, confidence remains relatively low so an advisory has been held off for now. Winds generally out of the southwest around 10 to 15 knots. Gusts around 20 knots are possible for the ocean waters off of Atlantic, Ocean, and Monmouth Counties, particularly Tuesday afternoon. Outlook... Tuesday night...Potential for SCA headlines on the ocean waters. SW winds 15 to 20 kt with gusts to 25 kt possible, and seas may build to 5 ft. Wednesday through Wednesday night...Sub-SCA conditions expected. W Winds 10 to 15 kt with gusts up to 20 kt during the day, then around 10 kt at night. Seas 2 to 4 ft. Fire weather remains a concern for Tuesday given the widespread warm and dry conditions expected. Highs in the low 70s are forecast across much of the region with afternoon dewpoints falling into the low 30s. As a result, min RHs are forecast to be sub 30% across the entire region outside of the immediate coasts with 20-25% common across the area. Winds out of the southwest are expected to be slightly stronger as well with sustained winds of 10 to 15 mph and gusts around 20 mph possible. With winds expected to be just below Red Flag criteria and some residual fuel moisture in the region, a Red Flag Warning has been held off. As a result, an SPS will likely be issued for the region for Tuesday but we will reevaluate the potential for an RFW early Tuesday morning. Conditions on Wednesday will be warm and dry with high temperatures in the upper 70s to around 80. Surface dew points will be in the upper 40s in the morning, lowering to the low 40s in the afternoon, resulting in Min RH values of 25 to 30 percent. West winds will range from 10 to 15 mph with 20 to 25 mph gusts during the day. On Thursday, highs will be in the lower 80s with surface dew points in the lower 50s in the morning, lowering to the upper 40s in the afternoon. This will result in Min RH values around 30 percent.
