Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A backdoor cold front will drop southwestward across the area
tonight, stalling across our region on Wednesday. It will slowly
lift back northeast out of the area Wednesday night and
Thursday morning before a stronger cold front moves in from the
northwest late Thursday into Thursday night. Canadian high
pressure will then build over the region Friday and dominate
into early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
The night will start mild and dry for most, but turn notably
more moist late tonight, as low clouds and possibly some mist or
drizzle moves in behind the front. Thus far, only some small
tendrils of stratus have developed near the immediate NJ coast,
with reduced visibility at Ocean City. Thus far most of the
guidance is a little over-aggressive in the speed and inland
extent of the clouds and fog this evening, but for now we still
are thinking at least some low clouds will reach the I-95
corridor and even eastern Pennsylvania by Wednesday morning.
Some guidance even suggests some dense fog tries to develop
across southern NJ with the advance of the marine layer, but for
now we are not expecting fog to be quite that thick or
widespread inland. There remains uncertainty about just how far
south the backdoor front makes it, but right now it appears it
will at least briefly make it down to northern Delaware early
Wednesday. Despite the front's motion, its affect on overnight
temperatures will actually be minimal, with lows mostly in the
50s.

The greater impact of the backdoor front will be on temperatures
and sky cover on Wednesday. With low clouds and fog dominating
to start the day, perhaps even with patchy drizzle, temps will
take their time to rise. The front will move back north a little
during the day, probably passing back north of Philadelphia,
but will struggle to get much further. Thus, we still forecast a
warm afternoon in the 70s to near 80 from Philadelphia and
points south and west, but much cooler as one heads
progressively north and east, with upper 50s along the coast and
in parts of northern New Jersey. In these areas, patchy mist
and drizzle may persist much of the day, while some sun will
break out further southwest.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
Overview...The main focus of the short term forecast remains
the strong low pressure system expected to swing a cold front
through the region late on Thursday. We continue to watch this
cold front, its movement and timing, and latest guidance
carefully as the potential for the development of severe
weather exists because of it.

The short term period will begin Wednesday night with strong
surface low pressure near or just over the western part of the
Great Lakes region. At the same time, surface high pressure will
be situated near/over Nova Scotia and a stationary front in the
vicinity of our region. With time, the surface low will
continue to occlude while pushing northeastward, having its
prominent warm and cold frontal boundaries move along with it.
We could see the warm frontal boundary over or just north of our
region Wednesday night lift the stationary boundary northwards,
though some of elements of the forecast (boundary placement and
timing) remain unclear due to the influence of the stationary
front in the vicinity. Regardless of exact warm and stationary
boundary placement and timing however, the pattern will be the
same in that we will continue to see chances of rain showers
Wednesday night from isentropic lift.

The main forecast challenge is Thursday in that it remains
unclear when exactly the cold front associated with the low will
pass through the region because of the prior frontal locations
and movement. Some earlier guidance was a bit faster with the
cold front coming through but most of latest guidance (including
most recent mesoscale and global models) supports the cold
front coming through during the mid afternoon to later afternoon
time frame. This timing of the front coming through is
significant for the development of severe weather. If the front
is fast to come through, e.g., before or just after noon, the
potential is less for severe development from less heating. If
the front is slow to come through, e.g., late afternoon into
evening, the potential is greater for severe development from
more heating. With guidance coming more in line for later
afternoon passage it is worth going into the potential for
severe development. Instability is supported among most model
soundings with some locations seeing more than 1000-1500 J/kg of
CAPE and over 100 m^2/s^2 of SRH. Not seeing anything to
impressive/outstanding in terms of shear but am seeing LCL/LFCs
somewhere between 1-2km AGL at most locations. Right now, wind
and hail look to be the more likely threats with thunderstorms
that could form though the chance of a tornado cannot be ruled
out at this time. We will continue to monitor this situation
closely in following updates.

Otherwise, fog remains possible Wednesday into Thursday

Wednesday night, rain showers could be accompanied by a rumble
of thunder due to some elevated instability. For Thursday, we
could see temperatures reach the upper 70s for most locations
and even the lower 80s at some locations. Categorical PoPs are
included for Thursday afternoon with PoPs tapering off into the
Thursday night period.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Most guidance continues to suggest the long term period will be
fairly quiet with high pressure dominating the region. We
should see surface high pressure build in from the west Friday,
moving generally eastward with time. This surface high will look
to be directly over the region Saturday and Sunday before
pushing offshore come the Monday time frame. There is some
guidance which suggests shortwave energy and frontal boundaries
may make things unsettled by the Monday night and Tuesday time
frame, but will largely not comment more on that at this time
due to very low confidence from such a far out time frame.

Have some slight chance PoPs in the forecast Friday for the more
southern most areas of NJ and Delmarva due to some guidance
suggesting Thursdays cold front slows well to our southeast. The
biggest impact from this potential slowing to our southeast
will not be PoPs but rather that it may keep the area cloudy
Friday. No PoPs are included in the forecast Friday night
through 00Z Tuesday. Rest of lingering clouds should move out
Saturday with Sunday looking to be mostly sunny. May see some
cloud cover move in for Monday.

Temperatures have a slight chance of being just below normal on
Saturday and Saturday night. Thereafter, near normal
temperatures are anticipated for rest of the long range.

.AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Tonight (through 12Z)...VFR early, will give way to lowering
ceilings to IFR/LIFR through the night as a backdoor cold front
sinks south and a marine layer moves inland off the Atlantic
Coast. For KMIV and KACY, these are the terminals most prone to
seeing LIFR ceilings and visibility restrictions as fog is
expected to advect inland between after 06Z. For the remainder
of the terminals, IFR ceilings will begin between 06Z and 08Z.
Periods of mist/drizzle are expected at all terminals. Winds
SE-S at 5kts early, will back out of the E around 5-10kts
overnight. Guidance has suggested that the marine/fog layer may
reach as far west as the I-95 terminals, but not enough
confidence at this time to include in the TAF.

Wednesday...IFR/LIFR to start with low clouds/mist/drizzle,
with some gradual improvement later in the day for
KPHL/KILG/KMIV. Elsewhere, conditions will struggle to improve
as clouds remain thick to the north of the backdoor front and
marine layer. Winds E-SE at 5-10 kts. Low confidence.

Outlook...

winds veer to SSW by morning. Low confidence.

Thursday...VFR conditions possible before frontal passage but mostly
sub-VFR expected. Convective development possible. SW flow becoming
