Area forecast discussion, Apr 2, 3:25 PM EDT, 2 hours 36 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
325 PM EDT Sun Apr 2 2023

.SYNOPSIS...
Canadian high pressure will slide east across the region
tonight. A weak warm front will lift north across the region on
Monday. Warmer air on the south side of the front will dominate
Tuesday and Wednesday before a cold front crosses the region
Thursday. Another Canadian high pressure will build in for the
end of the week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
Latest analysis depicts high pressure over the eastern US,
centered over the eastern Great Lakes. A low pressure system is
moving across the far northern Plains, with a warm front
extending southeastward ahead of it across the Corn Belt. Aloft,
a shortwave is moving off the coast with a flat ridge over the
Great Lakes and Mississippi Valley. Another shortwave is over
the far northern Plains.

Tonight, as the high pressure slides overhead, winds will become
light and variable. Dry air is already in place as dew points
have dropped into the teens and skies are clear. This will set
the stage for near-ideal radiational cooling, and should allow
temps to drop down near or below freezing for much of the area.
Across areas near and south of the Pennsylvania and New Jersey
Turnpike corridors, our agricultural partners previously
indicated that growth had advanced into the tender stage for
some fruit trees, so we have begun issuing frost/freeze
headlines for these areas earlier than we would normally do so.
There is some uncertainty on just how cold temperatures get
given that some high clouds may advect into the region late
tonight as warm advection begins aloft, which may prevent the
coldest potential readings from being realized. Thus, issued
frost advisories for a large swath of the area (even though it
may technically be too dry for widespread frost), and freeze
warning for where we are more certain of reaching 32 across a
majority of the area.

High and mid clouds will be a bit more common on Monday than
today, but still should see a decent amount of sunshine. This,
coupled with winds turning southerly and warm advection becoming
stronger, should result in a significantly warmer day, with
temps returning to the 60s. Late in the day, a weak warm front
moving in from the southwest coupled with a passing wave to the
north could spawn a sprinkle across northern parts of the
region, but have kept the forecast dry for now.

&&

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Southerly flow dominates the short term as warmer air returns to
the region. A cold front looks to stall to our north on Monday
night, with a few showers possible in the Poconos and far
northern NJ, but elsewhere, dry and much milder weather should
prevail. Lows will be in the comparitively mild 40s for most.

The stalled front starts lifting back northward on Tuesday as
southerly flow continues to dominate. This combined with some
sun should allow temps to return to the lower 70s for most, but
unlike our first day of widespread 70s on Saturday, there should
not be any severe weather, or even any rain, to put a damper on
the day.

The southerly flow will become more moist on Tuesday night as
the high shifts further to our east and a strong low pressure
develops in the Plains and heads towards the Great Lakes. This
could result in some patchy drizzle, mist or a few showers
overnight into early Wednesday. Temperatures will be even milder
than Monday night, with most areas staying in the 50s.

It looks like the low level moisture mixes out enough during the
day Wednesday to end the shower/drizzle/mist threat during the
morning, but clouds will be more common, and this may keep temps
down compared to Tuesday, with it looking a bit harder to pass
70 on Wednesday as opposed to Tuesday. However, significant
precipitation still looks unlikely on Wednesday.

&&

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Strong low pressure will lift northeastward thru the Great Lakes
and across southern Canada heading towards James Bay on
Wednesday night and Thursday. Cold front trailing this system
will gradually cross our region from northwest to southeast
during this time. This appears to be the best opportunity for
widespread precipitation and thunderstorms, though a lot of
uncertainty exists regarding any severe risk, as it appears the
best synoptic forcing may stay north of our region. Will have to
keep watching this closely. Either way, warmer air moving north
ahead of the front should result in one more day in the 70s on
Thursday, though this may be subject to the timing of the front,
which is still a bit uncertain.

Guidance is then in pretty good agreement regarding the return
of Canadian high pressure for Friday into the weekend, with
drier and much cooler weather returning with it. Highs likely
end up in the 50s again Friday and Saturday for much of the
region, but should rebound into the 60s as the high heads
offshore and warm advection resumes by Sunday.

&&
