.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will push well to our south tonight, before
lifting back north as a warm front Friday and Friday night as an
occluded low moves across the Ohio River Valley. A secondary
low is expected to form along the triple point of the frontal
boundaries across the Mid Atlantic states Friday night. This low
will take over as the main low as it shifts offshore of
southern New England Saturday. This low will move out to sea
through Sunday as high pressure tries to build in from the north
and west. This high shifts to the south Monday, before another
low and associated frontal boundaries affect the northeast and
Mid Atlantic states later Monday into Tuesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
The main weather story for the end of the week into the start of the
weekend is the storm system expected for tomorrow into early
Saturday with the following hazards: Wintry mix including snow and
freezing rain (mainly for southern Poconos and NW NJ), Heavy rain
with localized flooding possible, potentially significant coastal
flooding (detailed in the coastal flooding section below), and
strong winds along the coast. In the meantime though, an initial
weak low has moved off to the north and east with drying taking
place in its wake with a NW flow. Temperatures are mild at this hour
but as we head through this evening, cold advection will
strengthen on continuing northerly winds as high pressure
builds in to our north. Lows will be a bit tricky depending on
how quickly the winds diminish and skies clear but still
thinking at this point most places near and north of the urban
corridor will get to around or below freezing with somewhat
milder temperatures farther south.

By Friday morning, high pressure will be centered north of the area
with ridging extending southward into the mid Atlantic. Meanwhile, a
fairly potent storm system will be centered near Arkansas. There has
been no major changes with the overall forecast thinking...still
think that the day will start off dry with even some filtered sun
possible through the first part of the morning. However clouds will
thicken up through the late morning with precip expected to
overspread the area southwest to northeast beginning around midday
over Delmarva, reaching the Philly metro area by mid afternoon, and
our NW NJ counties by evening. This will occur as the low pressure
system moves northeast reaching Indiana by early evening at which
time its warm front will still be just south of the area. Expect
daytime highs Friday will range form the mid/upper 30s north with
40s elsewhere but that these highs will tend to occur near midday
with temperatures falling off in the afternoon after precip starts
due to wet bulb cooling effects. Still looking at just rain south of
the Mason-Dixon line and probably around Philly as well. Though as
wet bulbing occurs, including in dry layer aloft, it's possible
areas near if not just north of the urban corridor could see a mix
of rain/sleet for a time late day tomorrow not too unlike what
occurred the other day. We still  have greater concerns for a wintry
mix near the I-78 and especially near/north of the I-80 corridor
beginning by late day Friday.

Friday evening into the overnight is when the heaviest precip with
the storm is still expected as a secondary coastal low develops and
basically tracks right through the area moving from Delmarva
east/northeast through NJ towards Long Island by Saturday morning.
This will draw warmer air from the south and southeast near and
south of the storm's track. In fact, forecast models are indicating
there will be a 60+ knot LLJ near 925 mb moving through later Friday
evening aiding in moisture transport into the area and also
resulting in increasing winds, especially near the coast where E/SE
winds may gust 35 to 45 mph, possibly even a bit higher in places.
There may even be some embedded thunder as well due to elevated
convection from the warmer air advecting in aloft. Otherwise, expect
rain, heavy at times, Friday night with a wintry mix continuing
farther north near/north of I-78 but with this transition zone
eventually shifting farther to the north as the low tracks across
New Jersey. The precip should eventually wind down west to east by
late Friday night or early Saturday. In terms of accumulations, no
major changes as we still expect upwards of 1 to 3 inches of
snow/sleet near and north of I-80 with the potential for a tenth to
quarter inch of ice accretion over Carbon/Monroe County due to to
freezing rain. Snow accumulations should quickly decrease heading
farther south of I-80 with only a coating to half inch or so at best
near the I-78 corridor and n snow/ice accumulation expected for the
urban corridor. In terms of rainfall amounts, still thinking a
general 1-1.5 inches of rain expected for the urban corridor, most
of the NJ Coastal Plain, and Lehigh Valley with somewhat lesser
amounts over far southern NJ and the southern part of our
Delmarva zones. Locally, rainfall amounts could get near/over 2
inches or so especially from the urban corridor on east due to
embedded heavier rain and potential convection. Thus, continue
to have at least some concern for freshwater flooding issues
that could crop up Friday night, especially in urban areas. WPC
has most of the area in a Marginal Risk for Excessive Rainfall.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
For Saturday, storm exits to the east but there may be some
scattered lingering showers around over portions of eastern PA and
northern NJ. Otherwise, expect considerable clouds around with
breezy conditions with highs near 40 over the southern Poconos and
NW NJ, around 50 near the urban corridor, and into the 50s farther
south/east.Saturday night could feature some snow showers up north
as a weak shortwave passes north of the region. Any snow
accumulations will be light, less than a half inch. No precipitation
is expected for Saturday night south of the I-78 corridor. Lows by
Sunday morning should range from the upper 20s north to the low to
mid 30s near/south of the urban corridor.

Sunday features fair weather with at least a mix of sun/clouds as
high pressure starts to approach from the west. Expect highs mainly
in the low to mid 50s except 40s over the southern Poconos and NW
NJ.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Quiet conditions begin the long term period for Sunday night
into Monday as high pressure will try to nose its way in from
the north and west, before shifting to the south later Monday.
However, precipitation chances return for Monday night into
Tuesday as a weak low pressure system and associated frontal
boundaries will move across the southern Great Lakes region and
toward the northeast states Monday night into Tuesday. There is
not a significant amount of moisture and lift associated with
this system, but there should be enough to help create at least
some scattered showers across the area overnight Monday into
Tuesday. Temperatures may be cold enough for some freezing rain
to occur across the higher elevations of northwest New Jersey
and northeast Pennsylvania. Elsewhere, temperatures should be
warm enough to keep the precipitation as all rain.

Once this low moves away from the area Tuesday night, northwest
flow is expected to develop across the area through Wednesday
and Thursday. This will keep below normal temperatures across
the area and gusty winds. While the overall forecast is dry,
there is the possibility for some lake effect snow showers to
affect the northern portions of the area. A fair amount of cloud
cover may also be possible due to the northwest wind as well.

.AVIATION /20Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Through 00Z...VFR. Northwest winds have been a bit lighter than
previously forecast, although they should remain near 10-15 kts with
occasional gusts of 20-25 kts possible. High confidence.

Tonight...VFR. Northwest winds around 10 kts early will diminish and
shift more to the north before eventually becoming light and
variable overnight. High confidence.

Friday...VFR through 18Z, then ceilings will begin to lower as light
precipitation spreads into the area. VFR conditions should generally
prevail through around 21Z, then ceilings and visibility may lower
to MVFR or IFR by 00Z. Precipitation will begin as a wintry mix of
snow, sleet, and rain at RDG/ABE then change to all rain by 03Z.
Rain is expected elsewhere, although some sleet is possible as
precipitation begins at ILG/PHL/PNE/TTN. Winds settling out of the
east and increasing as the day progresses to around 10-15 kts after
18Z. Moderate confidence overall.

Outlook...

Friday night...MVFR and IFR conditions likely. Moderate to heavy
rain at times between 00Z-06Z. Mixed precipitation at RDG/ABE will
change to all rain by 03Z. Lingering light showers possible for the
remainder of the night. Winds east around 15-20 kts with higher
gusts possible. Winds will shift to the south at MIV/ACY around 06Z.
High confidence in restrictions, moderate confidence on the overall
evolution.

Saturday...MVFR conditions possibly lingering throughout the day
along with light showers. Westerly winds 15-20 kts. Low confidence.

Saturday night...Improving conditions. Northwest winds 5-10 kts.
Moderate confidence.

Sunday...VFR. Northwest winds 10-15 kts. High confidence.

Sunday night...Mostly VFR, although some MVFR ceilings may develop
during the evening for portions northern New Jersey and northeastern
Pennsylvania. Northwest winds 5-15 knots with gusts to around 20
knots early. Moderate confidence.

Monday...VFR conditions expected. Northwest winds 10-15 knots with
gusts to around 20 knots early. Moderate confidence.

Monday night...VFR early, then lowering to MVFR, possibly IFR
overnight. Chance of showers overnight. Southwest to northwest winds
5-10 knots. Moderate confidence.

Tuesday...MVFR or IFR conditions, especially early, may clear out
for at least the southern half of the area during the day. Slight
chance of showers. Northwest winds 10-15 knots, with gusts 20-25
knots. Moderate confidence.

.MARINE...
SCA continues at this hour due to elevated seas but these
diminish this evening. Conditions should then be sub-SCA the
rest of tonight.

Friday through Friday Night...Starting sub-SCA, but SCA
conditions developing in the afternoon and quickly ramping up
to Gale conditions for Friday night. A Gale Warning is now in
effect 6 PM Friday to 6 AM Saturday for all zones. In addition
to S/SE winds gusting upwards of 35 to 40 knots, expect seas
increasing to 8 to 12 feet.

Outlook...

For Saturday, winds/seas start to come down but will still be
elevated. In fact as the low tracks right across the waters
early in the day winds should subside but then increase again
from the W/NW for a time by midday Saturday into the
afternoon...possibly back close to Gales.

Winds diminish below SCA levels Saturday night but seas look to
stay elevated in the 4 to 6 foot range Saturday night through
Sunday.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Strengthening low pressure will track across the coastal plain
Friday night and shift gradually offshore Saturday. This
combined with strengthening onshore flow is forecast to result
in rising tidal anomalies through early Saturday morning. The
highest tidal departure levels are expected to occur with the
early Saturday morning high tide. The latest suite of guidance
seems to be rather conservative given the surface pattern that
is expected. Strengthening strong low pressure (~990 mb) with
modest onshore wind lasting over 12 hours tends to result in
higher tidal departures than guidance suggests, thus the latest
tidal forecast issued Thursday afternoon was hedged toward the
higher end of the spectrum of guidance.

Widespread minor flooding is forecast for much of Atlantic coastal
New Jersey as well as the Delaware Bay coast in New Jersey. Areas of
moderate flooding are possible in coastal areas of Middlesex,
Monmouth, and Ocean Counties. The most probable areas to experience
moderate coastal flooding will be along Barnegat Bay and Raritan
Bay. Due to the nature of the surface wind progressing from east to
southeast to southwest, it is likely that coastal flooding will
linger along Barnegat Bay through Saturday afternoon or evening
after the storm begins to depart. Spotty minor coastal flooding is
possible elsewhere along the Delaware Bay coast, Atlantic coastal
Delaware, and the eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay. Tidal flooding is
not expected along the tidal Delaware River.

A Coastal Flood Watch has been issued for the high tide early
Saturday morning for Middlesex, Monmouth, and Ocean Counties, from 3
AM through 11 AM Saturday. Coastal Flood Advisories will likely be
needed in a future update elsewhere in New Jersey where widespread
minor coastal flooding is expected.
