FOR SOUTHEASTERN SOMERSET AND NORTHWESTERN MIDDLESEX COUNTIES...

At 315 PM EDT, hail up to golf ball size was reported in New 
Brunswick. This severe thunderstorm is now located over Society 
Hill, or near Plainfield, moving north at 10 mph.

HAZARD...Two inch hail and 60 mph wind gusts.

SOURCE...Trained weather spotters.

IMPACT...People and animals outdoors will be injured. Expect hail 
         damage to roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles. Wind damage 
         to roofs, siding, trees, and power lines is possible.

FOR EAST CENTRAL SOMERSET AND NORTH CENTRAL MIDDLESEX COUNTIES...

At 338 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm was located over Middlesex, or 
near Plainfield, moving north at 10 mph. This storm has a history of 
producing hail up to golf ball size near New Brunswick.

HAZARD...Ping pong ball size hail and 60 mph wind gusts.

SOURCE...Trained weather spotters.

.SYNOPSIS...
A weak front will be nearly stationary across our region today
into Sunday, then it is forecast to move offshore early next
week. A stronger cold front arrives later Wednesday into
Thursday, with weak high pressure approaching from the west on
Friday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
The overall weather pattern for today and tonight will vary
only slightly from that of Friday. A mid level trough is
forecast to extend from the Great Lakes to the southeastern
states, with a mid level ridge remaining over the western North
Atlantic.

Short wave energy traveling in the mid level southwesterly flow
is expected to aid in the development of afternoon and evening
showers and thunderstorms. The location and exact timing of the
initial convective development will be somewhat dependent on the
position of the nearly stationary frontal boundary extending
across our region, along with any remnant outflow boundaries
from the showers and thunderstorms that occurred during the past
24 hours or so.

The moist unstable atmosphere will allow for the development of
some strong to severe thunderstorms again today with the
potential for isolated damaging wind gusts. However, today's
primary threat from the thunderstorms may be locally heavy
rainfall. The vertical wind profile suggests the likelihood of
training convective cells.

As we head into this afternoon, thus far convection has been
limited to just a shower or two mainly in southern Delaware. Low
clouds were quite extensive this morning. Though RAP analysis
suggest 2500-3500 j/kg CAPE across areas southeast of I-95.
However, with all of the low clouds this morning along with some
cloud debris from earlier convection, instability overall across
our area, particularly north and west of I-95, looks more
limited than yesterday. We are starting to warm into the 80s
across the Delaware Valley on southeastward, and dewpoints
outside of the Poconos for the most part are in the low to mid
70s, with another very warm and muggy day. For most spots
though, this will be the first day we don't eclipse 90 degree
high temperatures. Additionally, wind shear is a bit less today.
While storms will likely still fire this afternoon, probably
similar to yesterday along the sea breeze in south/central New
Jersey and Delaware and then lift northwestward, expect the
storms will not be as strong as yesterday.

Most model guidance suggests that thunderstorm activity will
diminish 6-9 PM with the loss of daytime heating. Low clouds and
areas of fog may settle in once again overnight. However, a more
prominent shortwave lifting north toward Sunday morning may
result in showers and isolated thunderstorms expanding across
our area, particularly across eastern PA into northwest NJ late
tonight, then southeastward early tomorrow morning.

&&

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Temperatures much closer to average however it will remain
humid. Some convection around each day with it more numerous
during peak heating.

The axis of a weakening upper-level trough is forecast to
arrive during Sunday. This will keep a weak surface front draped
nearly north to south across our area. Given some cooling aloft
and some additional forcing for ascent with the trough aloft
arriving, some increase in convective development should occur
especially in the afternoon and evening hours. While there will
be cooler temperatures (highs in the low to mid 80s overall), it
will remain humid as precipitable water values likely remain in
the range of 1.5 to 2.0 inches. However, the instability will
be held down (closer to 1000- 1500 J/kg of MLCAPE) which should
mostly keep the thunderstorms intensity in check especially with
weaker mid level lapse rates and moist profiles. Locally very
heavy rain will be probable once again with the high
precipitable water values and potentially slower storm motions.
Given recent areas of heavy rain, a SLIGHT risk for excessive
rainfall leading to possible flash flooding has been added from
roughly I-95 north and west (a MARGINAL risk a bit outward from
there).

Convection should begin to decrease in intensity and coverage
as we go into the overnight hours Sunday night. Some showers and
storms will persist through the night though, particularly for
areas near and northwest of the I-95 urban corridor. Low
temperatures are forecast to be mainly in the 65-70 degree
range.

As we go through Monday, the axis of the weak upper-level
trough crosses our region. This will take a weak cold front
offshore. Some lingering forcing for ascent with the weakening
trough aloft will support some convective development especially
in the afternoon and early evening hours. While there will be
cooler temperatures it will remain humid, however the
instability will be held down some again which should lower the
chances for a severe thunderstorm. Locally very heavy rain will
be probable again due to high precipitable water values and
potentially slower storm motions.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Summary...Cooler temperatures, with humid conditions ending for
the second half of the week. Some showers and thunderstorms
should return mainly for Wednesday with a cold front.

Synoptic Overview...An initially positive-tilt upper-level
trough is forecast to slide across the Midwest into the upper
Great Lakes and adjacent Canada Tuesday, then as it shifts
eastward its axis becomes more neutral. The trough is forecast
to close off before moving into the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic
regions Wednesday and Thursday. At the surface, low pressure is
forecast track across the eastern Great Lakes and into New
England with an associated cold front crossing our region later
Wednesday into Thursday. The timing details will depend on the
strength of the trough as a closed low will tend to be a little
slower. While the main closed low starts to open up and lift
away from our area Thursday night and Friday, a general trough
aloft remains in place and this will deliver cooler
temperatures.

For Tuesday...There may be a lull in the convective chances for
a time as a little bit of ridging is overhead well east of a
positive- tilt upper-level trough in the Midwest and upper Great
Lakes. There are hints at some subtle shortwaves within the
southwesterly flow aloft and this could be enough to produce a
few showers or thunderstorms during peak heating, therefore
generally kept a slight chance PoP (20 percent) in the forecast
during the daytime. The chances for showers and a few
thunderstorms look to increase at night as the aforementioned
upper-level trough amplifies across the Great Lakes and even
starts to close off. This will drive surface low pressure into
the eastern Great Lakes by early Wednesday, and increasing
forcing for ascent should start to overspread our area. Cooler
temperatures are forecast, however it will remain humid.

For Wednesday and Thursday...This time will be dominated by an
incoming strong upper-level trough/closed low. This will drive
surface low pressure to our north, however its cold front is
forecast to cross our area later Wednesday into Thursday.
Increasing forcing for ascent occurs and showers and some
thunderstorms may be ongoing Wednesday morning before
potentially becoming more widespread during the day Wednesday.
The extent of cloud cover and convective coverage will determine
how much instability can become realized, and therefore the
intensity of thunderstorms. Locally heavy rain will be quite
possible given a plume of higher moisture in place combined with
stronger forcing. Temperatures are forecast to be held down due
to more cloud cover and showers/thunder, however it will
continue to remain humid ahead of the cold front. While the
timing can change especially with the idea of a closed low
moving in, the cold front currently should be shifting to our
east to start Thursday. Cyclonic flow and cold air advection in
its wake will result in cooler temperatures and dew points
dropping. While the deep moisture plume is offshore, cannot rule
out some instability showers/thunder especially across the
northern and western areas. Even cooler and drier air should
then settle in for Thursday night.

For Friday...As the closed low opens up and shifts farther to
our north, a trailing trough axis is forecast to be over our
region. This will continue to result in cooler temperatures and
lower dew points. Despite the trough axis aloft and some
shortwave energy associated with it, plenty of drying should
preclude any showers from occuring.

We continue to monitor the track forecast for Hurricane Lee.
While the hurricane is forecast to make a northward turn with it
remaining well east of our area, there still is some
uncertainty. As of now, the main impacts look to be incoming
large swells and the development of dangerous rip currents into
our area during next week.

.AVIATION /16Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Early this morning...Variable conditions, with some TAF sites
experiencing MVFR or IFR ceilings and visibilities. Variable
wind 5 knots or less. Medium confidence.

Today...Mainly VFR. Scattered showers and thunderstorms
developing this afternoon. The thunderstorms will bring locally
heavy rainfall along with MVFR/IFR conditions. Wind favoring the
southeast to south 8 knots or less. Medium to high confidence.

Tonight...Variable conditions with scattered showers and
thunderstorms. Low clouds and patchy fog developing overnight.
Variable wind 5 knots or less. Medium confidence.

Outlook...

Sunday and Monday...VFR, although times of sub-VFR conditions
probable along some showers and thunderstorms. Southerly winds
5-10 knots diminishing some Sunday night, then becoming west to
northwest Monday and Monday night. Low confidence.

Tuesday...Mainly VFR. However there is a small chance for a few
showers during the day, followed by some increasing chances at
night when sub-VFR conditions may occur more. Northerly winds
5-10 knots becoming southerly in the afternoon. Low confidence.

Wednesday...Sub-VFR conditions possible with showers and
thunderstorms. Southerly winds around 10 knots, becoming west to
northwest at night. Low confidence.

.MARINE...
A southerly wind 10 to 15 knots today is forecast to decrease
to 5 to 10 knots tonight. Waves on our ocean waters are expected
to be around 2 feet, with waves on Delaware Bay at 2 feet or
less.

Outlook...

Sunday and Monday...The conditions are anticipated to be below
Small Craft Advisory criteria. Some thunderstorms are possible,
although the greatest chances/coverage should stay inland from
the waters.

Tuesday...The conditions should remain below Small Craft
Advisory criteria, although seas within the ocean zones may
begin to approach 5 feet at night.

Wednesday...Small Craft Advisory conditions possible as seas
within the ocean zones may build to around 5 feet.

Rip Currents...

A southerly wind 10 to 15 MPH is expected for today along the
coasts of Delaware and New Jersey. Breaking waves are forecast
to be around 1 foot with an underlying long period east to
southeast swell (around 10 seconds). There is a LOW risk of rip
currents for today.

A south to southeast wind around 10 MPH is anticipated for
Sunday with breaking waves around 1 foot. An underlying very
long period southeasterly swell (around 16 seconds) is forecast
to arrive. However, we will keep the mention of a LOW risk of
rip currents since the breaking waves should be relatively tame.
