Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 929 PM EDT Tue Jun 27 2023 .SYNOPSIS... Low pressure well to the north will cause a cold front to slowly cross the area overnight. High pressure will briefly dominate Thursday. Another frontal system is expected to move back in for this weekend and could linger into early next week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... The flood watch has been cancelled. No additional flooding is expected. Plenty of severe and flooding action again earlier this evening with reports of damage and localized flooding being received. The reports will be detailed and sent out through the late evening and into the overnight. Much of the heavy action has ended, but a few tstms are off the DE/NJ coast and another lingering tstm heading SE across Lancaster County PA. The activity will slowly diminish through the overnight as the cold front to our west will finally move through overnight. Expect lows to drop into the 60s. Patchy fog may develop where clouds break and winds become light. Upper level trough will pass overhead in the wake of the surface front for Wednesday. With a drier air mass moving in and loss of surface forcing, don't expect coverage like today's (and nothing like yesterday's) but some isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms expected with the upper level cold core during the afternoon with the best chances for this being over NE PA into NW NJ and lower chances farther south and west. Otherwise, overall a cooler and less humid day is expected, with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s and dew points falling into the lower to mid 60s. && .SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/... A dry day is expected Thursday as upper ridging builds behind the departing H5 trough. Under mostly sunny skies, temperatures should climb to near normal (low/mid 80s) as weak high pressure arrives. Dew points will remain moderate (mostly low 60s) so not a bad day overall. Beyond that, the ridge from the SW gets squashed back to the south as H5 flow across the Plains and Midwest strengthens. A weak low starts to form across the Great Lakes and a wavy front develop across our area. Scattered showers and tstms will occur with this set-up with chance pops as early as Fri afternoon. The last day of June will have temperatures a couple degrees above normal and an uncomfortable feel as dew points begin to climb back towards 70 again. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/... A mostly unsettled pattern for the weekend and into early next week. The wavy front remain close to our region and with some short waves embedded in the west-southwest H5 flow aloft. We will carry high chance or low likely pops for both Sat/Sun. but then scale things to chance pops for Mon/Tue. A few models (12Z GFS) are showing a trough exiting the coast Mon night/Tue with the possibility of a dry July 4th for the area. This is a bit far off in the process to have much confidence in it happening. We'll keep the NBM's small chance pops for Tue attm. The showery periods Fri thru the weekend will mostly be late afternoon/early evening time periods, with plenty of dry periods between. Temperatures will continue to be mostly normal or perhaps a few degrees above for the period. It'll be humid thru the period with dew points in the upper 60s/low 70s much of the time. && .AVIATION /01Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... THE FOLLOWING DISCUSSION IS FOR KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY AND SURROUNDING AREAS. Through tonight...Improving conditions behind the rains which are presently moving offshore. KACY has returned to VFR as of late but KILG has returned to IFR as some low CIGS have returned. Mostly lower CIGS will return before the cold front drives drier air into the area tomorrow. We'll fcst mostly MVFR CIGS overnight and indicate some fog possible too with all the low level moisture across the region. Light winds becoming mostly W towards dawn. Medium confid. Wednesday...MVFR conditions from overnight mist/low stratus could linger for a time into the morning with mainly VFR for the afternoon except for brief restrictions in any showers/storms. Best chances for showers/storms will be at ABE and TTN. Outlook... Wed night/Thu/Thu night... Mostly VFR. Patchy pre-dawn fog possible. Medium/high confid. Fri... VFR then a chance or showers/tstms late. Lower conditions possible. Medium confid. Fri night thru Sunday... Mostly VFR but scattered showers/tstms with lower conditions possible. The Small Craft Advisory has been cancelled for our southern two ocean zones but remains in effect through tonight for our remaining zones over the ocean, mainly for seas 4 to 6 feet. For Wednesday, the trend in seas will continue to be generally downward but this will be slow meaning our waters off the coast of NJ could stay around SCA levels much of the day. Finally, more showers and storms are likely over the waters for the evening and overnight period tonight and these could bring locally higher winds/seas. Outlook...
