.SYNOPSIS...
Extensive high pressure to our southwest and south will continue
to influence our weather into the midweek period. A surface trough
is forecast to develop to the lee of the Appalachians later during
the week. A cold front may arrive from the northwest next weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Shortwave moving across northern NJ this morning is making the
most of the heat and humidity with a continuation of showers and
scattered tstms between Sussex County southeast into Morris,
Somerset and then further into Monmouth Counties. Pops for
these areas have been raised with the mid-morning update. We are
still expecting that the activity will diminish by early
afternoon as the feature aloft moves offshore.
Later on, heat and humidity increase and in the presence of a
developing sea breeze, it's possible that more scattered
showers/tstms may occur late this afternoon and into the early
evening. We'll put some chance pops in the fcst for this
possibility. Temperatures and dew points were updated with some
cooler readings N/NE of the I-80 region.
Tonight, any shower/storm activity dwindles after sunset.
Otherwise, looks like an unseasonably warm night, with lows
mostly near or above 70.
Tuesday, ridge edges closer, so despite light northerly winds,
expect temps as hot or even hotter. Dew points nudge up a little
too, so we'll be right on the cusp of needing heat advisories,
with heat indices edging very close to 100. Will let future
shifts make call on any need for headlines. Will also need to
watch potential for isolated sea breeze showers as depicted by a
few models, but for now kept pops below 15 percent.

Another mild night in store for Tuesday night with lows only
reaching the low to mid 70s and dew points remaining in the
upper 60s to low 70s.
By Wednesday, the axis of the mid level ridge will likely
arrive squarely overhead across the Mid Atlantic and
Northeastern states, providing for another hot and dry day. A
prevailing northwest to north surface flow should help to keep
the humidity from rising significantly, though the resultant
weak downslope flow off the higher terrains may nudge
temperatures up another degree or two. Latest guidance does just
that a few locations sneaking past the 95 degree mark, mainly
along the urban corridor. Will need to keep an eye on the heat
index over the next few updates as we are just reaching heat
advisory criteria along the I-95 corridor. Another warm night
expected Wednesday night with lows in the low to mid 70s and
upper 60s across the higher elevations.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Our hot and dry patter will begin to break late week and into
the weekend as our mid level ridge is forecast to begin passing
off the coast and out to sea on Thursday. A short wave trough
reaching the the Great Lakes Thursday and Friday will eventually
get absorbed into a long wave trough gradually advecting over
eastern Canada, the Great Lakes and the northeastern states by
the weekend. As a result of this more unsettled pattern,
temperatures will likely begin to return toward normal, and
perhaps a bit below, in the Friday to Sunday time frame as a
chance for showers and a few thunderstorms increase.
A weak surface trough is expected to develop to the lee of the
Appalachians late in the week to give us our initial chance for
showers Thursday and Friday. A cold front is then forecast to
approach from the northwest to give us another chance for
showers and storms and it should make its way through our region
around Saturday evening, though models are now hinting that a
few showers may linger through the day on Sunday.

Rip currents...
Today, wind will turn southerly. Wave heights offshore still
right around 4 feet, and there continues to be a long period
(10-12 second) swell component on top of the longer period main
wave group. Given the continuation of the longer wave periods,
this will keep waves in the surf zone on the rougher side and
thus a HIGH risk for the development of dangerous rip currents
is maintained for both the Delaware and New Jersey beaches.
For Tuesday, the long period swell will persist as a result of
a number of strong post-tropical lows in the North Atlantic and
continue to cause hazardous rip currents. As a result, a HIGH
risk for the development of dangerous rip currents for the
Delaware and New Jersey beaches will continue.
