Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure shifts overhead today with milder temperatures
returning. Weak low pressure passing through on Thursday will be
accompanied by mild temperatures and some light showers before
a stronger storm system tracks across our region Friday and
Friday night. This system looks to bring another mixed bag of
wintry precipitation. High pressure returns late in the weekend
and will remain in control through the early part of next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Residual fog this morning has since dissipated.

The rest of the day starts out quiet with high pressure sliding
east out to sea this afternoon. Warm front moving into the area
will bring more clouds back to the region this afternoon, with
a few showers possible in northern NJ and the Poconos, but
likely dry elsewhere. Temps will moderate with more sun and warm
advection, with highs into the 40s to lower 50s.

Warm front likely struggles to clear the area tonight, staying
mostly south, but southerly flow will bring moisture back to the
region, with low clouds and patchy fog/mist/drizzle becoming a
concern. With cold front also approaching from the west, some
showers will become a risk later in the night particularly,
though right now confidence is not high regarding measurable
rainfall, so kept most pops in the chance range. Better odds in
far north and far south, closer to surface front (south) and
upper level energy (north), where likely pops are now in the
forecast. In the north, we'll have to keep an eye on temps, as
we could see a little freezing precip (mainly Poconos and Sussex
County NJ), but not confident to include risk in forecast just
yet as clouds may prevent temps from getting cold enough for it.
Otherwise, lows will be milder tonight with reading in the mid
30s to mid 40s overall.

Risk of showers starts out relatively robust (though still
chance mostly) but declines thru the day Thursday as cold front
pushes through towards midday. This should clear out the low
clouds/fog/mist/drizzle that accompanies the southerly flow
tonight, with clearing and drying during the afternoon.
Downslope flow and mixing behind the front should help elevate
temps well into the 50s despite the warm front never actually
clearing our region, but this will be short-lived, as cold
advection will be taking hold by day's end.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Cold front moves through Thursday evening with high pressure
building in to our north Thursday night helping supply colder
drier air which will have impacts on the next system. Skies
should be clear for a time Thursday evening and then cloud over
overnight ahead of the next system. Latest indications are that
Thursday night should by dry. Lows will be a bit tricky
depending on how quickly clouds increase ahead of the next
system but current thinking is for lows ranging from the mid 20s
over the southern Poconos and NW NJ, low to mid 30s over SE PA
into adjacent portions of southern NJ, and upper 30s to low 40s
over Delmarva.

For Friday, attention turns to the significant storm system
that will be approaching from the south and west as it moves
from Texas/Oklahoma late Thursday north and east towards the
lower Great Lakes by late Friday. From the overnight suite of
guidance, the GFS, which was the more progressive solution in
the 12z suite, has fallen more in line with other guidance,
delaying the onset of precipitation for our area. Important to
note that it is still the fastest among global guidance, though
it is not nearly as much of an outlier compared to earlier. The
general trend appears continues to be a bit slower/later arrival
which makes sense given the pattern over the north Atlantic is
becoming more blocked. In terms of the gridded forecast, these
factors entailed further delaying the storm's arrival a bit
compared to the NBM.

In terms of the details regarding the Friday storm, expect warm
advection precip to begin overspreading the areas southwest to
north late Friday morning into the afternoon as a primary center
of low pressure advances northeast towards Ohio and a warm
front starts to lift north towards the area. However, the
stronger push of warm air could be more aloft as opposed to at
the surface due to the high to our north helping draw down low
level colder air with N/NE winds. Thus, our area looks to be
near the battleground of airmasses setting the stage for a
wintry mix. South of the Mason-Dixon line though looks to be
mainly rain. Just to the north over SE PA and adjacent portions
of southern NJ, there could be some snow/sleet at the onset
before a change over to rain with the better chance of a more
significant wintry event being over northern parts of the CWA
near the I-80 corridor. As the primary low moves towards Ohio, a
secondary low will eventually take shape near the Delmarva
peninsula late day Friday or Friday evening and depending on
exactly where this sets up, this could help keep cold air in the
lowest levels locked in longer over the Poconos and NW NJ.

The heaviest precip with the storm now looks to end up moving
through Friday night as the primary low weakens over the lower
Great Lakes and the secondary low moves NE near the coast
towards New England. This all occurs as the system's upper level
wave moves through. As a result Friday's highs will be reached
in the evening. Expect by this time it will be a mainly rain
event over SE PA, central, southern NJ, and Delmarva. With some
elevated instability over Delmarva and South Jersey, I've
included thunder in the grids as a rumble of thunder is
certainly possible. Further north towards the I-78/I-80
corridor, wintry precip will continue into Friday night. Precip
should finally start to wind down by Saturday morning. In terms
of snowfall accumulations, the current thinking is that areas
from the I-80 corridor on north could see 1-2 inches of snow,
with areas south seeing less than an inch or no accumulation at
all. Confidence remains low overall with this though. The bigger
threat actually looks to be the icing potential, as model
soundings in the southern Poconos and NW NJ continue to show
low-level cold air holding firm on Friday night, with warm moist
air aloft. This could result in a prolonged period of freezing
rain, with some spots in the southern Poconos nearing a quarter
of an inch of ice accretion.

In addition to the wintry weather threat, total QPF amounts
with the system could be on the order of an inch to an inch and
a half...probably not enough for major fresh water hydro issues
but it will be have to be watched as nuisance type flooding
could be an issue. East winds will be also be ramping up along
the coast at the storm's height Friday night with potential for
gusts of 30 to 40+ mph. So all in all, a fairly significant
system even though it will be another storm that should be
mainly rain for places like Philly and points south/east.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A weak shortwave will move through on Saturday night, with some
rain/snow showers expected. Precipitation looks to be confined
to areas north of Philadelphia. With the weak system moving
through overnight, temperatures will be favorable for some light
snow showers, primarily for the northern third of the CWA, or
north of I- 78. Elsewhere, expecting mainly light rain showers.
Any snow accumulations look to be minor overall.

Mid-level ridging with surface high pressure moving in will
result in a quiet end to the weekend and start of the work week.
Should be dry through Monday night with seasonal early March
temperatures- daytime highs in the low to mid 40s across the
Lehigh Valley and northern NJ, with upper 40s/low 50s across the
Philly metro, South Jersey, and Delmarva.

Next chance for precipitation could come Tuesday, though a lot
of uncertainty remains. General signal from guidance has a weak
system moving through or no system at all with prevailing quiet
weather. More details to come as it gets closer. Stronger signal
for near- normal temperatures continuing for the middle part of
next week.

.AVIATION /17Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Rest of today...Prevailing VFR conditions with mostly clear
skies and S to SE winds around 5-10 kts. High confidence.

Wednesday night into Thursday...Approaching weak low will bring
a warm front into the region that will increase low level
moisture, developing low stratus and fog beginning this evening.
IFR cigs and visibility will begin to develop late evening and
likely become widespread before midnight. Some hi res guidance
strongly suggests LIFR conditions at times. Restrictions will
largely remain in place through about mid-morning (14-16Z)
before beginning to lift. Terminals should see some improvement
to MVFR as the cold front pushes through before noon with VFR
expected and W to NW winds 10-15 kts for the rest of the
afternoon.

Outlook...

Thursday Night...VFR. Increasing clouds ahead of the next
system. Northerly winds around 5-10 kts. High confidence.

Friday through Friday night...sub-VFR conditions likely with
rain and possible mixed precipitation in the morning. Best
chance to see mixed precipitation will be at KRDG/KABE/KTTN.
East/Northeast wind around 10-20 kts with gusts around 30 kts
possible late in the day and into Friday night. Moderate
confidence overall.

Saturday...Improving conditions as the day goes on though some
lingering restrictions possible in the morning. West/northwest
winds around 10-15 kts with gusts near 20 kts. Moderate
confidence.

Sunday...VFR. West/northwest winds around 10-15 kts. Moderate
confidence.

.MARINE...
Winds are sub SCA thru Thursday, with northerly flow shifting
easterly, then southerly, then finally westerly as we head
through the next three periods. Strongest gusts likely Thursday
behind cold frontal passage, but staying just below SCA.
However, seas remain elevated even now and likely remain above
SCA thresholds on the ocean waters thru late this afternoon.
Some guidance suggests they hold on even longer, but for now
elected to maintain SCA as inherited thru this afternoon and let
day shift review before extending further. Even if they drop off
for tonight, seas likely build a bit behind the cold front
Thursday, so we may need SCA for marginal seas by Thursday
afternoon. Confidence is low at this time, however.

Outlook...

Thursday Night...sub-SCA conditions likely. North/Northeast
winds around 10-15 kts with seas around 3 to 4 feet.

Friday through Friday Night...SCA conditions likely as seas
build as the day goes on, getting to around 6-10 feet by the
evening. Winds will also get above SCA criteria during the day
with gusts around 25- 30 kts possible. Gales possible on Friday
night as winds ramp up further with southerly gusts up to 40 kts
possible. Wind direction will be easterly for Friday, with a
more south/southeast direction expected overnight.

Saturday through Saturday Night...Winds diminishing as the day
goes on, though SCA conditions still likely due to seas. Gales
could continue into the morning as well. West/Northwest winds
around 15-20 kts. Seas around 5 to 7 feet.

Sunday through Sunday Night...SCA conditions possible during
the day on Sunday as seas will be near 5 feet. West/Northwest
winds around 10-15 kts. Seas should relax by Sunday night with a
return to sub- SCA conditions.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
An area of low pressure is expected to develop near the
Delmarva peninsula, moving offshore on Friday night. This will
result in a period of onshore flow, with minor coastal flooding
possible with the Saturday morning high tide. Intensity of
coastal flooding will depend on the track and timing of the low.
Based on current guidance, thinking the largest threat for
coastal flooding is for the NJ coast, with a lesser threat for
coastal Delaware, Delaware and Chesapeake Bay communities, and
the tidal Delaware River.
