.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure centered to our west and south will build in tonight
then weaken Saturday as another high builds across northern New
England. Low pressure across Florida will strengthen as it moves
northward and up the East Coast Sunday and Monday. A cold front
looks to move through Tuesday followed by high pressure Wednesday. A
cold front may then be nearby on Thursday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Broad high pressure is centered over the Ohio Valley and Mid-
Atlantic and will slowly side off the coast late tonight. Mid-level
ridging will also lie over the Northeast, and mid and upper level
heights will rise today and tonight. Sunny skies on tap for today
and mostly clear skies on tap for tonight, though some high clouds
may begin to stream into northern and western zones towards daybreak
Saturday as some mid-level shortwave energy approaches from the west.

Warm air advection will be underway today due to westerly flow, and
winds will increase to 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 20 mph during
the afternoon. Highs will be some 5 to 10 degrees warmer today
compared to Thursday, topping off in the lower 50s throughout,
which are as much as 10 degrees above normal.

Lows tonight will generally bottom out in the low to mid 30s.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Mild as clouds increase and lower in advance of a strengthening
storm from the south.

An upper-level ridge shifts eastward as a potent trough dives across
the Plains promoting more ridging aloft in our region Saturday. This
supports an initial surface high weakening as it arrives while a new
surface high strengthens and builds across northern New England
during Saturday. However, with warm air advection occurring and
heights on the rise, daytime temperatures are forecast to rise into
the low to mid 50s for much of the area on Saturday. The air mass
will be in transition on Saturday as moisture begins to increase
initially in the upper levels. Therefore, an increase in high level
clouds occur during the day Saturday, and these will then lower and
thicken Saturday night in advance of a deepening storm to our south.
The low-level flow will be out of the northeast and this will bring
more of a marine influence with time, therefore areas of stratus
should develop as we go through Saturday night. While some sprinkles
or drizzle could develop later Saturday night, the main rain shield
advancing northward from strengthening low pressure to our south
holds off until after daybreak Sunday. The arrival of thickening and
lower clouds Saturday night will result in not as cold overnight
temperatures, mainly in the mid to upper 30s.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Summary...Strong low pressure tracks northward up the East Coast
Sunday and Monday and brings a round of heavy rain, strong winds,
marine hazards along with possible coastal impacts, then turning
colder and drying out through the middle of next week.

Synoptic Overview...The upper-level pattern transitions into a
dynamic one as northern stream energy eventually phases with the
southern stream. The latter will be responsible for surface low
pressure developing across the Gulf of Mexico, then as the northern
stream interacts with the southern stream the surface low will
strengthen quite a bit as it turns northward from Florida. The
placement of the northern and southern stream energy will determine
where the surface low tracks, however the overall model consensus is
now for a storm up the East Coast. One final strong piece of energy
then shifts southeastward from the Great Lakes and results in a
strong upper-level trough in the East Tuesday before lifting out and
allowing for some ridging to arrive by later Wednesday.

For Sunday and Monday...A deepening low pressure system arrives from
the south late Sunday then shifts to our north on Monday. This looks
to bring impacts to the region, which includes the Monday morning
commute.

As the potent upper-level trough arrives, ample deep-layer forcing
for ascent coupled with robust low-level warm air advection occurs.
An intense low-level jet on the order of 50-75 knots (at 925 mb) is
forecast to lift northward in tandem with the surface low. This
impressive wind field will drive robust low-level warm air and
moisture advections. It is within this zone where the heaviest rain
will probably fall, as precipitable water values rapidly increase to
about 1.5 inches across the region. The high precipitable water and
ample lift will result in a period of heavy rain, which as of now
looks to occur Sunday night into Monday morning. Rainfall totals
look to be in the 1.5-3.0 inch range, with the upper range perhaps
limited some on any faster northward movement of the storm. Given
the rainfall will be onto a saturated ground, there is a flooding
risk and this will be enhanced especially if much of the heavier
rain falls in a shorter period of time. We will need to watch some
of our creeks and streams, especially the quicker responding ones.

The consensus of the guidance brings the surface low across our
area, along the coastal plain or just offshore. This track would
tend to maximize the rainfall and also winds. The specific outcome
will ultimately depend on the exact track of the surface low and its
intensity. A surge of warmer air will work its way northward in
advance of the surface low, and this should result in mild
temperatures Sunday with temperatures possibly rising some more
Sunday night.

In addition, a robust low-level wind field will pile water into the
coast, although the robust warm air advection over and off the
cooler ocean waters tends to create a more stable boundary layer.
Despite this, the guidance show impressive 3 and 6 hour pressure
falls associated with this storm and this can compensate for any
stable marine influence. As a result, wind advisory gusts (40-50
mph) are possible mainly closer to the coast. The strongest winds
should lower some farther inland, although the higher terrain should
see some higher winds given the robust wind field within about 2500
feet above the ground.

As the surface low shifts northward across our area Monday morning,
it should then be undergoing an occlusion. This will quickly end the
rain from south to north Monday, although the morning commute could
be impacted with some heavier rain still falling along with possibly
some street flooding. Winds will turn sharply from the west and
northwest in the wake of the storm Monday with temperatures and dew
points on the fall as cold dry air advection occurs under a gusty
wind. Temperatures should peak Monday morning then fall at least
some during the day. The parent upper-level trough will cross our
area Monday night and this may result in a few rain/snow showers and
temperatures cool to near 30 degrees by daybreak Tuesday.

For Tuesday through Thursday...As a secondary strong shortwave
drops in from the northwest, a trough will be maintained over our
region for Tuesday and perhaps this produces a few snow showers or
flurries although much drier air will also be advecting in under a
gusty northwesterly wind. The trough looks to be somewhat progressive
and therefore an upper-level ridge arrives by later Wednesday which
results in surface high pressure arriving. Daytime high temperatures
are currently forecast to be near or below average for Tuesday and
Wednesday, then closer to average Thursday as a cold front may be
nearby.

.AVIATION /09Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE,
KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Today...VFR. Light SW winds through daybreak, becoming W 8 to 12 kt
with gusts up to 20 kt this afternoon. Winds diminish to 5 to 10 kt
by 00Z. High confidence.

Tonight...VFR/SKC. W winds 5 kt or less. High confidence.

Outlook...

Saturday...VFR during the day with some increase clouds, then MVFR
to even IFR ceilings should develop at night. Northeasterly winds 5-
10 knots. Low confidence regarding the onset of sub-VFR conditions.

Sunday...Sub-VFR conditions with rain from south to north and it
becomes heavy at times, especially at night. Northeast to east winds
10-15 knots with gusts up to 25 knots, then east-southeast winds 15-
25 knots with gusts 30-35 knots at night. A period of low-level wind
shear (LLWS) especially Sunday night. Moderate confidence.

Monday...Sub-VFR conditions with rain heavy at times. The rain
tapers off from south to north in the afternoon with conditions
gradually starting to improve. Southeast to south winds 15-25 knots
with gusts 25-35 knots, becoming westerly by the afternoon.
Conditions should improve to VFR especially at night. Low confidence.

Tuesday...VFR overall. Northwesterly winds around 15 knots with
gusts up to 25 knots, diminishing some at night. Low confidence.

.MARINE...
West winds will increase to 15 to 20 kt. Overall, any gusts will be
as high as 23 kt, and only occasional gusts up to 25 kt are possible
this afternoon. Do not think 25+ kt gusts will be frequent enough

become NW 10 to 15 kt tonight.

Seas will average 2 to 3 feet on the ocean and around 1 foot on
